Nearly 90 pupils from Jackson Township rural schools joined Fairview in a day of events at the annual Playday. Morning field contests included running, high jump, sack race, and more while 125 parents shared a picnic lunch. Salem school led with top scores, followed by South Prairie and Grand Prairie. Betty Sojka, 13, of Grand Prairie, earned note for perfect attendance across nine years with Ruth Gideon as teacher.

Gets 30 Days, $100 Fine in Baby Case
In Des Moines Mr and Mrs John Fanning pleaded guilty after a Polk county grand jury indicted them for abandoning a newborn baby boy found in an east Des Moines residence. Fanning 27 was indicted for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and sentenced to 30 days in county jail plus a $100 fine. The mother 20 Frances Fanning was to be sentenced at 9 am next Tuesday.

Fred Vetter Dies Leader in Muscatine Pearl Button Industry
Fred C. Vetter, 63, president of the Hawkeye Pearl Button Co., Muscatine, died after a brief illness. A pioneer of the fresh water pearl button industry, he helped found the field with John F. Boepple and led the company since 1914. He was active in state Republican circles and is survived by his widow, three daughters, and his mother.
