The Great Northern Chicago strike turmoil grows as the general manager Ward faces an ultimatum. The system committee shows near unity with 11–1 votes backing the committee, while 14 of 15 proffered by conductors and one by a brakeman. Further lumber yard and city-wide labor tensions ripple through Chicago as strikes expand.
In Emphis Tennessee on May 12 Judge Amond of the federal court granted a restraining order against striking employees and others, preventing interference with trains on the Mobile and Ohio railroad in Tennessee. A hearing for a broader injunction is set for Jackson, Tennessee, at 10 a.m. Chicago dispatches report clerks and rail officials operating the freight division as strikers must return by morning. if not, the company will seek new workers. Also noted are ball scores from Chicago games.

Conmel General of the Congo Free State in London, Mr Hondret, issued a letter to Rev William Morrison of Lexington Va a Presbyterian missionary. Morrison recently alleged tyrannical conduct by whites toward natives in the Congo. Hondret notes Morrison did not raise the charges during meetings in Brussels and says such allegations would have been actionable if presented to Brussels authorities seeking to repress abuses.
Private telegraphs from Jackson and Lexington debunk a claim that an attempt was made on J B Ewen. The Courrier Journal interview sparked confusion when the reporter published it after a false belief of Ewen’s death. Ewen later claimed he identified the shooter as Curtis Jett during the exchange with a Hargis faction member nearby.

Reports from Panama and Washington on May 12 claim President Marroquin of Colombia has resigned amid political turmoil. General Raphael Reyes, designated by Congress in 1808, would assume the presidency though confirmation is pending and canal treaty support remains debated.
