Johnson seeks large cuts to excise taxes in July package

The Johnson administration drafts a 1.75 billion excise tax cut to take effect July 1, with possible additional rounds totaling 800 million next January to offset social security increases. The plan may repeal taxes on jewelry, cosmetics, luggage, admissions, and many consumer items, plus several manufacturers excises, while gasoline and highway revenues remain protected.

Sioux City Firm Wins Bid for 35 Street Blocks

Boswell Contracting Corp. of Sioux City won the bid on 35 blocks of street paving and sewer work in Washington. They offered $250,539.87 for paving and storm sewer plus $13,999.60 for sanitary sewer on West Monroe Street. Mayor Cloid Willits praised the bidding results noting a likely cost per running foot about a dollar under the estimate.

Police investigate theft at Wagner's Standard Service

City police investigated a break in at Wagner's Standard Service on the east edge of Washington. Entry was gained through an unlocked west window and $12 to $15 was reported stolen. Proprietor Omer Wagner said nothing else was missing.

Farmer Held on Open Murder Charge in Rock Rapids Slaying

James Bowen, 75, was found shot to death in his Lyon County farm home three miles north of Rock Rapids. Howard Bowen, 37, his son, was arrested and held on an open murder charge after a family quarrel led to the shooting. A 22 caliber rifle was recovered at the scene.

Death of former Washington County Sheriff Charles M Denison

Charles M Denison 70 former Washington County sheriff and restaurant operator died this morning May 11 1965 at Washington County Hospital after three months illness. He was born May 29 1894 and served as sheriff 1920 1929. Burial at Elm Grove Cemetery with American Legion rites. Survivors include his brother Dale and nephew Jerry Denison. Vernon Wittrig marks 40th anniversary at Wittrig s Shoe Store with family joining staff this summer.

Mrs Mabel Gray Dies Here Today

Mrs. Mabel Gray 84 died here this morning May 11 1965 after a three month illness. Her home was 221 East Jefferson St Sherman Funeral Home with Rev Vernon Elgin in charge burial at Woodlawn cemetery. She was born April 18 1881 in Washington daughter of Charles and Florence Frazier. She married Duane Molesworth in 1904 and Edward T Gray in 1916. Survivors include two sons Keith F Molesworth of Baltimore and E Thomas Gray of Iowa City three grandchildren one step grandson and one sister Lula Long of Washington.

Bank project under way at Riverside location

The Peoples Trust and Savings Bank of Riverside awards contracts for a new bank building across the street from the present site. Earl Wood and Sons Inc of Washington Iowa wins the general contract while Swailes Electric and Riverside Plumbing and Heating Co secure the electrical and heating contracts. Groundwork started Monday May 10 as the bank expands to handle increasing deposits and modernize facilities.

Iowa House approves tax plan on private college endowment properties

The Iowa House passed a bill 103 to 8 to place profit making property and buildings in private college endowment funds on local property tax rolls by 1975 for assets owned before 1965 and immediately for post 1965 acquisitions. The measure excludes campus classrooms dorms and admin buildings from taxation and allows one parsonage exemption.
