Chicago greets Baron Gunther Von Huenefeld Maj. James Fitzmaurice and Capt. Hermann Koehl as their Junkers plane lands at Municipal airport from Cleveland. Thousands line streets and crowd the field when the tardy craft arrives amid earlier tension over the horizon.
Word reached Mrs O P Hicks of the death of her brother J F Quinn of St Louis. He was found dead in bed this morning though he had not been ill. Quinn formerly lived here and worked for the Frisco railroad. Details of death unavailable and Mrs Hicks left for St Louis.
Western Union supplies crews rebuilding lines between here and Brighton and west. A foreman and his wife, Mr and Mrs J A Lieurance, live in a car on the tracks with a cosily furnished interior.
Bethel reports a Mrs Boyd Foster hosted Pleasant Plain Missionary group for an all day meeting. Local families visit, with Mr Dawson ill with pneumonia. Mothers Day plans announced with a Sunday school program. Students took 8th grade exams at Pleasant Plain. Community members travel for visits and hold a church cleaning day aided by Rev Parker and Mr Parker. Agriculture notes show widespread planting and scarce feed.
The Washington city council awarded bids for a sewage disposal plant and a southwest sewer extension totaling 90 123 35, about 24 055 86 under estimates. Weighton Construction Audubon Iowa won the plant bid 53 206 with completion by November 1. W B Carter Sioux City won the sewer bid 36 917 35 with work starting June 1 and sixty days to finish.
The Methodist Episcopal church general conference in Kansas City approved a plan to form a new commission on church union to seek overtures from likeminded churches for closer cooperation. Debates followed as the action was deemed the conference's most significant work. Separately, New York Republican factions were urged to nominate prohibition candidates for governor and senate, with copies sent to other conferences.
The Hoover for president organization in Washington disclosed it has spent 42,082.18 and accepted 49,150 in contributions. James R. Good, campaign director for Herbert Hoover, told the senate committee the listing shows Edsel Ford gave 5,000, and Senator Walter Edge 1,000. The group circulated literature denying Hoover was not a Republican and addressed wartime wheat price claims.
Charles A. Lindbergh declined to discuss the meetings with Henry Ford and Edsel Ford held at Dearborn yesterday. He arrived at Curtiss Field in Los Angeles after a largely uneventful flight from Detroit flying a Ryan monoplane accompanied by Captain P V H Weems.
John D. Rockefeller Jr remained silent on the demand for Stewart's resignation as Standard Oil of Indiana chair amid new developments. He was praised by 2,000 chamber leaders. Stewart said the request would be given careful consideration. The DC grand jury examined Stewart's testimony in the Continental Trading Co. oil deal for possible perjury indictment.
Coach Hod Rice takes his high school track squad to Burlington for the Little Six meet with five teams entering. Burlington seeks a fifth straight title though Ottumwa Fairfield Washington Muscatine and Burlington riders predicted strong showings. Preliminaries start at ten with finals at 1 30 Ted Sauer of Fairfield is referee and starter.
In Eld of Shenandoah at Red Oak Iowa May 11 Henry Field failed to invite Senator Lars J. Skromme of Roland to an event. The omission drew denunciation from Skromme regarding the gathering and its guest list.
A gubernatorial hopeful is set to address listeners at Field's radio station near Shenandoah, drawing sharp denunciations from opponents. The event underscores mounting campaign tensions as coverage swells in local media circles.
In Des Moines on May 11 proponents and opponents of a proposed state paying bond issue held separate meetings. Key speakers included Thomas H. McDonald of the federal Bureau of Public Roads and Fred White of the state highway commission for the paying side, while Representative George Patterson and other legislators led the anti bond group. McDonald will speak this afternoon at 8 30 from radio station WHO.
Ground was staked for the new nurses home at the county hospital park and excavation begins next Monday. A 3 p.m. Saturday ceremony marks the start and A W Roeder of Rockwell Town is the contractor. The $35 000 structure will use local labor and a Washington firm for brickwork. National Hospital Day observed with open house from 2 to 5 p.m. tomorrow inviting visitors.
In Winterset Iowa a coroner inquest was set for today into the death of a 60 year old unidentified woman struck by an automobile driven by Catherine Ambrest, a high school student. The woman was dragged fifty feet and suffered a fractured skull. rain reduced visibility and Ambrest was not held.
W G Robertson, superintendent of Columbus schools, was elected secretary of the Columbus Junction fair association this week. Division superintendent will be chosen Wednesday evening. Chester Sink is seriously ill at home. Helen Darrow visited Iowa City earlier this week. Mrs I J Yoke of Mediapolis visits her sister in Columbus City. Mrs Harry Grubb of Galesburg Ill visits sister Ella McSweeney. Mrs Helen Schneider of Burlington assists at the Weber Hudson office. Paul Wagner of Vermillion visited his mother this week.
Skromme charged Field with posing as the farmer's friend during a campaign street speech, asserting deceit in presenting himself as a trusted ally to rural voters.
The regular meeting of the Better Washington club is set for tonight at 7:30 in City Hall. President Enslin urges a large attendance and sign ups for membership. Members should bring a friend and invite interested residents to attend as reports from committees are on the agenda.
The clerk of district court announced that the adjourned session won t commence on May 14 but will instead open Monday May 21. The notice was received from Yidge J Patterson of Oskaloosa.
Rosalie Widmer Stringtown Esther Rittenhouse West Chester Pauline Glege Ainsworth won first places in oratorical dramatic and humorous divisions at the rural grade school declamatory contest held at the junior high. Bruce Gardner West Chester Amog Stout Brighton were runners up in the oratorical class. Marjorie Goff Stringtown second in dramatic. Gwendolyn Hoover West Chester second in humorous. Judges included Supt J F Peet Miss Charlotte Foster and Miss Jessie Kerr.
Mildred Kurtz reports a quiet Sunday at the Dave Benson home and a strong Prajria Flower church turnout of 91. Local residents Ameal Chabal and son Robert visited Mrs. John Kurtz. C H Bear and family and Wm Koening families traveled to Washington. Ameal Chabal and children went to Kalona. H J Myers family also visited Washington. Charley Brinning shows a new Buick coupe. Fred Ruebsam and daughter Maxine of Chicago and Mrs. William Reubsam of Washington visited Clyde Fishburn home.
Tokyo officials announce nine Japanese casualties and 117 wounded in the Tsiwan fighting as Japanese troops maintain control of Tsinan City and the Tsinan Tsingtao railway. China appeals to the League of Nations while accusing Japanese forces of looting and killings in Shantung.
A blaze at the I. K. Beal farm two miles southeast of Ainsworth destroyed a horse barn and outbuildings. Four horses died. 1509 bushels of corn, a double corn crib, garage, truck, silo, gasoline and oil were lost. Origin under investigation though not attributed to Beal or hired help.
Walter Hagen defeated Bob Jones to win the British Open at Royal St George, finishing with a 292 aggregate. The American PGA champion displayed steady play in tough conditions, receiving the cup from the Prince of Wales.
Mrs Walter Gardner reports in Havre that Mr and Mrs Howard Witting Mr and Mrs Dale Darby Mr and Mrs Carl Schneider and Bryan Swift attended an uncles funeral in Illinois Friday. John Weerman bought a new Chevrolet car. Mrs John Reeves and son Marion and Mrs David Ferguson visited John Hilar home near Brighton Wednesday. Mr and Mrs Oscar Gardner and family visited Wm Mes Bride home Sunday. A car load of hogs was shipped to Chicago by the Havre Shipping Association on Tuesday.
