A Shenandoah column notes 119 graduates include Mrs. Howard Mc Queen 19 mother of a four month old baby. After marriage she pursued private instruction from Mrs. Leo Warin a former teacher. Mrs McQueen formerly Talya Danielson a dancer.
Iowa City officials authorize Roy L. Chopek to stage an air show at the municipal airport on Sunday as part of Iowa City 8 observance of National Air Mail week.
William Shannon, manager of the Pa Jones store in Storm Lake, reported to Sheriff A E Thompson that $165 in bills and checks were stolen from his home May 4. The case was solved Sunday when Shannon found the money hidden in bed springs.
The Floyd brothers from Casey, J. W. 78 Brush Colo Allen 74 Oskaloosa Jr. and G. W. Floyd 76 John 72 Aaron 70 and Charles 66 meet, their ages totaling 436 if added consecutively.
Elmer Berkland and George Wadsworth of Des Moines escaped serious harm when their sedan struck a hole in the road causing a broken rear spring to puncture the gas tank. The ensuing fire broke out but they avoided injuries despite the blaze.
An attempt to strike water on the Andrew Anwick farm near Harlan failed but inflammable gas appeared in quantity enough to blaze for a day and a half. Rain extinguished the flame after blowing gas, then the hole was filled. A coal deposit is believed to have trapped the gas.
At a World Christian Fundamentals conference in Waterloo a crowd of 2,500 heard speakers denounce communism atheism and socialism and call for jail sentences for teachers who teach false philosophies.
Des Moines Senator Clyde L. Herring informs President Roosevelt and Postmaster General Farley that the posts office department refused to issue an Iowa centennial stamp. He says Iowa’s first 100 years of territorial sovereignty deserve any effort to grant the request.
Davenport Archbishop Harry S. Longley, head of the Iowa Episcopal church, declares a ban on bingo and all games of chance in diocesan parishes. He urges compliance with state law and adherence to Christian moral standards in his annual address at the diocesan convention.
Funeral services for Romer Leedy will be held tomorrow at 2 40 PM at Mt Marrah church near Sel e. His sister Augustine is among surviving relatives. Burial follows in the cemetery.

Mrs Emma Bain of Wayland dies at home after asthma and heart trouble. Funeral set for Wednesday at 2 30 pm at Wayland Methodist Church with interment in Wayland cemetery. Survived by five daughters and one son. husband and three sons and one daughter preceded her.
A county Legion gathering will be held at Wellman in the Oakwood dance pavilion at eight o clock Thursday evening. It is a stag affair with several members from the Leon Beatty post planning to attend.
Hubert Hendrix, 16, of Deer Creek, Iowa, died from injuries after being struck by a Milwaukee freight train near Ottumwa. The incident occurred May 10 and authorities are investigating the accident.
Crief-stricken Dave Sweatt abandons his plan to reach Baton Rouge with his wife and four children. He stays in Opelousas where his infant daughter is buried, saying the people here are friendlier than anywhere he has lived. He hauled his family from Brownsville Texas in a small wagon with their meager possessions.
A night-time report states a man was believed to be riding on a box car when the incident occurred. No further details on identity, location, or investigation are provided.
Washington high school state champion marching band plans a benefit program May 16 at Case Field with 25 cent admission and 25 cent tags to raise funds for a Minneapolis regional contest trip. a booster effort aims to cover entry fees, transportation, and hotel costs for about 63 band members and adults.

Mrs. W. A. Carson, a former Washington resident, died yesterday afternoon in Davenport where the family has lived for years. The service was set for four o'clock Wednesday at Range Funeral Home in Davenport. The Carsons celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at Davenport in April.

A massive explosion at the Markham coal mine near Chesterfield Fingland trapped more than 166 miners as flames gutted tunnels half a mile below the surface.
