In Council Bluffs three kittens blocked freight car movements in the railroad yards. Four railroad men jacked up a tank car and freed them. A roundhouse crew adopted the kittens, after they had been living in a berth under the car.
More than 30 dogs were killed during a week long campaign to stop raids on poultry and livestock. A German Shepherd responsible for maiming 12 sheep and six lambs at the Scott Leonard farm was killed by Amos Case. Two dogs were killed at the R. D. Lockwood poultry farm.
Des Moines reports former President Herbert Hoover will speak at Drake University on Monday June 3 as commencement address. The faculty will confer an honorary Doctor of Laws on Hoover, the only Iowa born citizen to serve as president.
KEOKUK The death Thursday morning of James M McIntosh 88 leaves only one surviving member of the Torrence Post Grand Army of the Republic here. The other survivor is Charles McCoy who as commander disbanded the post several months ago.
Davenport report from Iowa State College extension economists says farm income for the first six months of 1935 will be higher than a year earlier. They note that for January to March 1935 farmers received 85 million dollars more income than in the same period of 1934.
In Sioux City police announced further arrests after raids on a Bel Lane brokerage office and a Kroloff grocery seized 73 slot machines. Among those already in custody are Ike Sherman a Congress cigar store proprietor and J K Brennan who runs a beer parlor.
Davenport physicians should stay abreast of medical advances and take post graduate courses. Dr Gordon F F Harkness of Davenport, president of the Iowa Medical convention, addressed the eighty fourth annual convention.
Des Moines reports Iowa’s old age pension fund could rise to at least 4 million dollars yearly if federal social security legislation passes. The commission cites 2 million from the head tax 1 million from a legislative appropriation and 1 million from federal aid as the minimum mix.
Five theology students, all graduates of St Ambrose college, will be ordained as Catholic priests Sunday in Davenport. The Most Rev Henry P Rohiman, bishop of Davenport, will preside at Sacred Heart Cathedral investiture ceremony.
Dr William Jepson Sioux City cancer specialist and Iowa medical society committee head warns pipe smokers face irritation that may develop into cancer. He says any constant irritation can turn into cancer and pipe smokers are especially susceptible during the annual convention.
The newly organized farmers' telephone company won a city franchise to place poles and wires within DeWitt. The vote was 388 in favor and 261 against the proposition.
Huntsville Texas May 10 Raymond Hamilton public enemy No 1 died in the electric chair after a prison escape related killing of Major Crossen. Palmer, sentenced for the same offense, followed to the chair seven minutes earlier. Hamilton read a 200 word statement in his last hours.
Marian Baker, longtime Washington County welfare worker, has resigned pending June 1 handover. She will join state relief in a new role, with Des Moines official Ina Taylor coordinating the transition and the emergency relief committee meeting to arrange the records transfer and successor appointment.
As Rogers extols Amelia Earhart in Beverly Hills, he notes flying from Mexico City lifts altitude before takeoff and a 400 gallon fuel load marks aviator prowess. He imagines her meeting with Mrs. Roosevelt, visiting Paris, Moscow, Tokyo clubs, Behring Sea whalers, and an address in New Orleans to an anti Long Society audience.
A large turnout attended the building materials and house furnishings exhibition at city hall open yesterday evening. The Washington high school band played on the lawn, drawing more visitors, with displays arranged to showcase home building and furnishing goods. Exhibitors include Westphal Jewelry, H. I Ward & Co, Eveready Plumbing, Eclipse Lumber, Scott Furniture, J. C. Penney, Montgomery Ward, and others. The show runs through Saturday night.
John Tucker and Howard Anderson start a new building for a used car market facing the alley parallel to East Washington Street near the city hall. The 86 by 69 foot iron structure will have a concrete floor four offices a mechanical department a wash rack a painting room and a car storage area. It should be ready in about two weeks. Mrs. W. T. The opening program at the Gazeman house on South Iowa Avenue, slated for this evening, has been postponed while plans for reorganization and revision are developed. A committee will oversee plan revisions with C M Wegman FHA and Paul Gruber Des Moines agents involved. further promotion discussions have occurred with the Chamber of Commerce.
Gilbert Cheek a young Augustana baritone drew praise at the Presbyterian church concert last night. His varied program included sacred numbers and an encore from Sea Fever. Ronald Josson of Augustana accompanied the pianist solos.
Honolulu reports no trace of 45 naval air planes missing after war maneuvers in the north Pacific. The planes, stripped of aerial defense, left Pearl Harbor bound for Midway Island 1200 miles northwest. Secrecy surrounds the unit and indications say no arrival before Saturday.
The Washington city council held a session with H R Green Cedar Rapids engineer formerly employed by the city to discuss renewed proposals for west side sewer connections to eliminate cess pools and plans to surface miles of streets with crushed rock. Co P Lewellyn a member of Green's office will visit Washington next week to review both projects and assist in preparing them for the necessary preliminary steps.
Mrs. Alex Miller secretary of state was to testify in Polk county district court in the Rabenold case seeking reinstatement to a position he lost in the state motor vehicle department. Rabenold claimed soldiers preference entitles precedence while department officials testified he was incompetent.
In Brockton Massachusetts on May 10 a 200 pound woman bandit named Ida Kryder 40 Mother of seven entered a downtown shoe store armed with a pistol and demanded money. Clerk Ed Bushman 35 seized the bandit's wrist and knocked her to the floor.
At six o'clock this morning death visited the home of Mr and Mrs John P Gamble at 304 East Van Buren street. Mary Gamble mother of Mr Gamble died yesterday at 1:30 p m and June Pauline Gamble granddaughter of Mr and Mrs Gamble and daughter of Mr and Mrs John Gamble died this morning of pneumonia A double funeral will be held Monday at two o'clock at the Baptist church with Rev A A Vinz presiding. Obituary notices were not ready for today and will be printed Saturday.
The front of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church has been refinished and a new carpet laid as a gift from the Ladies Aid Society. The updates mark a fine improvement for the church building.

Federal and state agents announced the arrest of five, four held in Sioux City, ending a kidnapping ring linked to four kidnappings and six robberies across Town, South Dakota, and Minnesota. Those detained include Charles Knight and Karl Egan of Sioux City and Paul Clayton of Sioux City. Milo Jensen of Minnesota was also arrested. The case ties to the hijacking of Ernest Newman, an armored car messenger, in Sioux City for $1,150, with most crimes attributed to the gang in southwestern Iowa, South Dakota, and Minnesota.
The Atlantic and Pacific Tea company signed a lease with K B Dougherty for the east side room of the square once occupied by Marion Thompson. Remodeling will add a 30 foot rear extension with steel shelving and a meat department to make the store fully modern.
Des Moines May 10. Sheriff John R Hattery of Story county was appointed chief of the state highway patrol by legislative authorization. He will command 53 officers and report to the secretary of state with two executive assistants to be named soon.
Mrs G. B. Kerr and Mrs J. Sexton left last night for Chicago to visit Mrs Kerr's daughter Mrs Jewsle Lalor and spend Mother's Day with her.
