CHICAGO UP James W Gardner rushed back Tuesday to retrieve items left in the glove compartment of a battered 1951 car sold to a used car dealer. The quick return followed his realization he had forgotten to clean out the car before the sale.

Clarence Beitel 82 former Grace Hill resident in Washington County died Monday at his Muscatine home after an extended illness. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. Thursday May 10 at Fairbanks chapel Muscatine. He was born Sept 8 1873 in Washington County and retired in 1951 as a foreman in the Automatic Button Co novelty dept. He is survived by his wife a son Byron a brother Alonzo two sisters and one grandchild. he was interred with prior death of a daughter four brothers and three sisters.
Mrs. Peter W Richard 64 died at Washington County Hospital after several years illness. Funeral at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church Thursday with three ministers. burial in Sugar Creek Cemetery. Survivors include husband, a daughter, two sons, seven grandchildren, six sisters and four brothers.
Plans for the annual Mother Daughter program at the YWCA are complete. The city wide event will be in the YMCA gymnasium at 7 45 p m Friday. Mothers and daughters meet for dinner at their churches before gathering. All mothers and daughters are invited to attend the program at the Y.
West Chester hires 1956 Parsons College graduate Dick Goodwin as head coach. A Fairfield native, he played on Parsons football team that won the Iowa Conference last year. He and his wife have two preschool daughters and seek a residence in or near West Chester.
Commander Earl Marten of the American Legion announces Lannie Poole son of Mr and Mrs Verle Harris will attend Boys State near Des Moines from June 3 to June 9. Poole is a junior at Wellman High School.

About 30 members of the Masonic lodge from Washington Missouri will visit Washington Iowa Saturday evening. They will initiate a candidate for the third degree in the local lodge room at eight o clock. The Missouri group will return the courtesy visit later, date to be announced.

The four way race for U S Representative from the first district and the two way race for governor are drawing interest. Local and state candidates were invited to speak informally starting at 8 p.m.

About 35 Washington Y's Men cleaned the Lake Darling Youth Center cabins and grounds ahead of camping season. They swept, trimmed weeds, repaired and placed bedding, then held a steak dinner and a brief business session with guests expected to work at the camp.

Funeral services for Mrs. Noah Wilson 50 Columbus Junction who died in a Muscatine hospital Monday are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Methodist Church with Rev. George C. Pennington presiding. Stephens Funeral Home handles arrangements and burial will be in Indian Creek Cemetery. Mrs. Wilson formerly Stella Beatrice Lee daughter of Orren Lee and Ella May Brown Lee. She spent her life in the Columbus Junction community.
Iowa Supreme Court declares the 1953 law regulating transient merchants constitutional. The act required non Iowa based sellers to pay 25 dollars per sale day and post a bond equal to twice the value of goods, dismissing claims of discrimination by Steinburg Baum Co.

A barn on the Fay Goodwin farm southeast of Wellman was struck by lightning during a severe storm today at about 7 30 this morning. The Wellman fire department extinguished the blaze but four hogs were lost while most livestock were saved.
