Superior Judge Joseph W. Vickers recounted a road incident in Los Angeles where he struck a horse while driving. The animal was unharmed, while the car suffered 415 dollars in damage in the Monday collision.

In Columbus Junction a special Columbus Community School district election named the new board to start July 1. 419 ballots were cast with Thomas Rees and Lewis Foss for one year, Robert Raney and Warren Langstaff for two years, and Lewis Newell for three years. J. E. Henson was named treasurer of the new board.
Anchor Post Products in Red Oak Iowa was sold for over one million dollars to John Wood Co New York. J B Balmer president says the Red Oak plant makes furnaces will serve Wood Western customers and operate under the heater and tank division. The plant employs 60 with J J Titus continuing as plant manager.
Washington High School Future Homemakers of America chapter members will present a style show at the school auditorium on the evening of Tuesday May 15. Girls in the FHA chapter will model clothing they made in class under Mrs Molis supervision. The show will be open to the general public.
President Eisenhower briefed by Senate and House leaders report a favorable path for a new farm bill. The measure centers on the soil bank program, omits rigid high price supports, and aims for an administration satisfactory version. Senate Democrats diverge on price support levels for feed grains.
Defense Secretary Charles E Wilson told a Senate Appropriation subcommittee that the United States is not being outstripped by the Soviet Union in air power. He announced a goal of up to 20 B52 intercontinental bombers per month, up from six, with peak output expected early in 1958 and a $3 billion plan for guided missiles next year. He urged considering total air strength including Navy planes and tactical aircraft, noting 37 000 military aircraft will be operated in fiscal 1957 along with 4 000 Army liaison and helicopter types.
Washington County residents attended a Red Cross district disaster meeting Monday evening in Oskaloosa. Officials present included disaster chairman Mrs. Marsh Atkinson, vice chairman Norman Schoonover, shelter committee member Fred Bourgeois, canteen chairman Marvel Funk, and Mrs. Grethel Marshall representing Civil Defense and welfare inquiry. The session covered how chapters can cooperate during disasters.

Lee E. Howard 60 a justice of the peace near Des Moines was sentenced to 10 years and paroled after pleading guilty to embezzling 827 in fines and fees. County Atty Leo Tapscott urged parole noting a clean record and a sick wife. Howard must repay 827.
Republicans of Washington County plan a May 18 public meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Day. The event invites all to meet local GOP candidates for state representative, county treasurer, and hospital board, with Q A sessions led by William H. Smart and Richard Stephens.
Vincent Sojka 35 a Riverside farmer is hospitalized in Iowa City after a self inflicted gunshot wound Monday afternoon. He was in a field with a broken tractor disc when he reportedly went to the attic and shot himself with a 22 rifle. The bullet pierced his lung and spleen but did not hit the heart. He was found by a doctor called to the house and transported to University Hospital. Mrs Sojka remained with him at the hospital. Doctors cited stomach ulcers as a possible factor in his despondency.
Des Moines Iowa Old Doug Miller aged 94 returns to his longtime post as statehouse messenger for nine Iowa governors since 1913 after a nine week illness. He resumed duties despite a later illness and travels by city bus to the capitol continuing a 40 year career amid a life spanning slavery, Des Moines scenes and hotel work.
The Des Moines Weather Bureau forecasts scattered showers across Iowa tonight and Wednesday as a western storm center moves in. Temperatures will rise to the 80s on Wednesday with tonight in the 40s to 50s and highs in the northern part around 68 and the south near 71.
Mrs Noah Wilson 50 of Columbus Junction died at Muscatine County Hospital after a lengthy illness. The body is at Stephens Funeral Home. Born Stella Leet April 27 1906 in Muscatine County she was daughter of Orrin and Etta Leet and lived in the community. Survivors include husband one son Lysle a sister Faye Karr and six brothers Edwin Delbert Clifford Merle Robert and Paul Leet.
Former Senator Millard E. Tydings leads in the Maryland Democratic senatorial primary by a slim official margin over George Mahoney with 130,456 to 128,178 votes in 28 of 1,287 precincts reported. Mahoney contests the count as Baltimore canvass continues, while Tydings awaits the official tally to face Republican John Marshall Butler in November. Eisenhower and Kefauver lead the presidential primary as unpledged delegates draw small support.
Grinnell College Dean R Homer Norton told a Des Moines Parent-Teachers meeting that high schools neglect English math history science and foreign languages. He cited remedial English for many freshmen and warned math enrollments nearing a national crisis.
Des Moines reports Sam Morris a temperance crusader and Baptist minister was ousted yesterday from his roles as president and board chairman of Preferred Risk Mutual Insurance Co. after a bitter board meeting. He clashed with a company official over a tape recorder and vowed to contest the action, while observers anticipate a potential proxy fight at the next annual meeting.
Iowa man Robert Greenland, 25, of Leon, said two hitchhikers held him up on U.S. 69 about six miles north of Indianola, forced him to surrender $8 from his wallet, then fled after firing a shot. Police located Greenland’s car at the U.S. 69 and 65 intersection, the reported robbery site.
In St Louis the government began calls of witnesses in a case alleging Matthew J. Connelly and T Lamar Caudle conspired with attorney Harry S Schwimmer to fix a tax evasion case. Ernest M Flinn testified on investigation methods in the Sachs case.
Authorities debated charging Gordon Hinkley of Wales after his truck plowed into a 16 car Milwaukee Braves Dodgers special train carrying 1000 base ball bound students. More than 100 injured, mostly children. Hinkley severely hurt. Police plan to question him again when he regains speech.

Marion Hall manages the store with Curtis Long leading sales and service. events run May 12 from 10 am to 10 pm featuring Aunt Jemima, Griffith Hedberg Dairy products, and specials from Quaker researchers Dr Nesheim and Ralph McCall.
