Government ordered gas rationing across 21 states as coal shortages ripple through industry. A nationwide 300000 railroad worker strike set for May 18 could halt coal deliveries. President Truman considered seizing railroads to keep them running and weighed ending the coal strike by contacting John L. Lewis and mine operators for talks. Large portions of industrial workers face layoffs with GM, Chrysler, Ford idling tens of thousands. textile and other sectors also brace for closures.
