On sale Monday morning May 13, order by mail any time. performances Wednesday and Thursday at the high school auditorium.
Spread Eagle school pupils near Washington visited several local businesses under teacher Mrs. R. C. Wead. The tour included the American Pearl Button plant MecCleery-Cunningham calendar plant and the Evening Journal. Participants included Ardith Wead and classmates Dorothy Anderson Donald Anderson Kay Anderson Jody Timmins Harvey Timmins Howard Timmins Relden Jarrard Cathryn Jarrard Lula Belle Hough and Larry Jackson.
Government emergency buying program records 3 179 301 bushels sold with an additional 555 447 bushels bought from Iowa farmers. Harrison county tops with 223 778 bushels followed by Boone 215 954 Story 213 485 and Polk 200 084. Officials expect more sales after a 25 cent price rise but note the new price will not go into effect soon.
The Senate backed the 3.75 billion dollar British loan on a 54 to 27 vote amid efforts to push final passage before adjournment. Critics argued the measure origins clash with constitutional rules as southern lawmakers threaten to stall for emergency labor legislation on the coal strike. President Truman defended the loan as equally important to the labor bill.

Maurice Landing 21 and Elizabeth Marie Thomas both of Marengo were killed instantly when their car hit cement posts on Highway 212 early today. Miss Thomas was a student nurse at Iowa University Hospital and would have graduated in June.
The Postmaster General announces drastic parcel post limits due to curtailment of rail service. Parcels cannot exceed 11 pounds or 60 inches combined length and girth, far below the normal 70 pounds and 100 inches. Four classes are exempt including live poultry seeds perishables medicines. Hannegan will address 42,900 postmasters by radio tonight.
Due to a deadlocked election two finalists could not be chosen, so four Washington high school students Wayne Marshall Dick Dare Dick Young and Duane Redlinger will attend the American Legion Boys State at Camp Dodge June 29. Principal Al Trevelt arranged with state Legion headquarters to send four at the students body expense. The four led in voting and will learn political convention procedure through the state citizenship school experience.
In a letter to constituents Senator Wilson of Iowa endorses price control but opposes its arbitrary use. He argues subsidies exceed 2 billion dollars annually, warns against ruthlessness in administration, and questions infl ation logic of treasury subsidies while noting U.S. indebtedness at 274 billion dollars.
In Rome on May 9 UP reports King Victor Emmanuel II’s abdication of the throne faced opposition from communist leader Palmiro Togliatti. Premier Alcide De Gasperi cancelled Naples plans as the plan potentially delays. If objections fade, formal abdication could occur Saturday after cabinet review.
Late yesterday a car driven by Samuel Cagen of Waukesh a spun on loose gravel and overturned in a ditch four miles north of town with about 300 dollars in damage but no injuries. A second accident on Brighton road near Diamond Inn involved Glenn Miller Jr and a Batavia truck driver with around 230 dollars in damage and no injuries. A separate inquiry seeks the car that killed three pigs on road 92 west of town yesterday as it failed to stop after striking the animals.
Mrs Rose Skipton widow of John S Skipton died at 5 30 PM yesterday at the county hospital after a lingering illness She had been in the hospital six weeks Funeral services set for Friday at 2 30 PM at Sherman funeral home burial in Elm Grove cemetery She was born in Washington September 26 1872 to Wenel and his wife Houdek Her life centered in Washington with six years in Stuart Iowa She was married 47 years ago to John Skipton who died four years ago She attended the Presbyterian church Surviving are three sons Francis Galisburg Illinois Frank Shenandoah Iowa and Richard Washington three grandsons and one brother Peter Houdek Avilla Beach California
John W Jones 65 a retired Brighton area farmer died of a heart attack at 6 15 this morning Funeral arrangements are pending with L A Jones Washington He was born October 18 1880 in Missouri and lived most of his life in Brighton He married Hattie Clark February 15 1905 Surviving are his wife son Dale daughters Cleo Robertson Cecil Waker and others five grandchildren and sisters in California Nebraska and Iowa Neighborhood residents recall his prominent farming role and church and lodge memberships
Albert Orcutt marks nine years of operating a Piggly Wiggly grocery in Washington at North Iowa Avenue. He began in 1937 after earlier runs in Melcher and a move from the DeWitt location. The business is owned by Mr and Mrs Orcutt and two new workers Clarke Erickson and Ona Kendrick joined as meat cutter and cashier.
County board of supervisors, railway attorney, and construction engineer reviewed Rock Island line plans to cross 19 roads this year. Fourteen grade crossings and five overhead or underpass crossings are proposed with two major crossings on Wayland and Coppock roads south of Washington. Construction hoped within 60 days but could be delayed by strikes and labor/material shortages. Also, Iowa Commerce Commission issued a condemnation notice allowing Rock Island to acquire land for railroad purposes, listing affected property owners including Lowash, Mayhew, Alexander, Wagner, Malmberg, Schafer, Camp, Pfeiffer, Sutherland, and Wolter families.
Frank Schneider learned today of the death of his nephew Ed Schneider of Yankton South Dakota. He was a son of Mr and Mrs Louis Schneider of Yankton. His parents formerly lived here and he attended school in Washington for a time. He was about sixty six years old.
A government source says President Truman may urge striking United Mine Workers and soft coal operators to produce coal for at least 30 days while talks continue. Truman hinted at a White House meeting to end the shutdown and studied all options to force a settlement, though federal seizure of pits was not confirmed. John L. Lewis pushes a royalty on mined coal to fund a miners welfare fund. The Senate plans immediate consideration of anti strike legislation after a British ban clears.
The 39 day strike triggers fuel shortages across New Jersey and the auto industry. New state measures, potential government seizure, rail schedule cuts, and mass job vacancies push Chicago and other regions toward heightened economic strain.
The senate approved a draft extension to July 1 without dissent after rapid passage under a unanimous consent agreement. Senator Edwin C. Johnson introduced the measure, and it was adopted within minutes.
Pittsburgh May 9 United Electrical workers CIO and Westinghouse Electric Corp reached an accord ending a 115 day strike. The contract covers 75 000 workers at 11 states with an 18 cent hourly raise plus variations. Ratification by UE membership and local union actions are planned.
