A Des Moines restaurant committee meeting at Hotel Fort Des Moines approved a plan to appeal to the public to refrain from asking for a second cup of coffee for two weeks. Paul H. Martin, secretary of the state association, says they hope to avoid charging for a second cup.
John Bryck owns about 80 tons of old trucks tractors and autos on his Ruthven area farm. He has sold 11 tons of scrap and salvage chairman Lawrence Brennan says Bryck plans to sell the remaining material.
Thomas Porter, 32, a service station operator, pleaded guilty to receiving stolen goods linked to tire thefts. District Judge H K Fry sentenced him to one year in jail and a $300 fine, with nine months suspended after three months served and the fine paid.
Three public officials including Sheriff Mike Mier County Attorney John D. Moon and Police Chief Carl M. Higdon announced Thursday they would confiscate all slot machines in Wapello county. On Friday they received invitations to join the Scrap Metal division of the Salvage For Victory committee led by Chairman John K. Mahon.
The Pella Tulip festival wraps up today with a patriotic pageant. Final day features street scrubbing a parade and the crowning of festival queen Miss Jeanne Van Gorkom.
Mason City John J Fack lis owner of the Wander Inn cafe was fined 100 and costs in justice court on a charge of keeping a dog in a cafe. Charges were filed by state restaurant inspector W H Moncrief. The fine was suspended.
In Fort Dodge eight tavern and restaurant operators pleaded guilty to illegal possession of liquor. District Judge H. E. Fry fined each $300 and sentenced them to three months in jail, suspended during good behavior. Defendants may not appear in their establishments while beer is sold.
Robert E. Hill, director of alumni activities at the University of Missouri, urged attendees at the Central Commercial Teachers association convention to cease criticizing the government. He spoke during a banquet address stressing unity and constructive support for public policy.
Hill argues it is high time the government stops criticizing them and both sides should cease actions that draw scrutiny. He calls for a change in approach to reduce public fault finding and restore cooperation.
Washington May 9 Officials of the war production board praised Henry Kaiser for completing a liberty cargo ship in 78 days. Kaiser, who built Boulder Dam, said he can cut the 78 day record possibly by half and beat the 150 day goal set for other builders.
Winga's cafe now seats 106 guests excluding private dining room after rearranging the space and installing oak booths. Owner John Winga notes ongoing decorating plans including linoleum updates and a back-bar refresh to match bleached woodwork, with a lounge for waiting patrons and a Coffee Club meeting area at the back.
The Washington County USO executive committee announces John Owen of Washington as the 1942 campaign chairman. He plans to begin solicitation in all county towns on Monday May 18 and hopes to complete the drive that week. Rural areas will be reached via school district representatives as preparations start to raise funds for armed forces nationwide. Washington County’s quota is 3800.
The selective service board mailed questionnaires today to 100 men of the county's third registration. Order numbers range from 10201 to 10263 with many residents listed by name and address in Washington and surrounding towns. Classification will be based largely on questionnaire responses when returned for board review.
Funeral services for Mrs. Milt Denison are set for Sunday at 2 30 p m at the Baptist church with Rev. Alfred Trenerry presiding Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery She died yesterday at her home 632 East Main Street aged 72 after a six month illness Born May 4 1870 in Living Lake neighborhood she was married April 21 1892 to Milt Denison They observed their fiftieth anniversary last month Surviving are her husband two sons Charles and Dale a daughter Cecil and a sister Mrs L B Donaldson
Lieut. Gov. B. B. Hickenlooper of Cedar Rapids pledged support for any reasonable bill to aid Iowa dependent children. The Republican gubernatorial candidate is a member of the American Legion, which has backed federal aid for dependent children in three legislatures. He said the welfare of dependent children is a common charge.
Mrs W M Tweeten leads a twelve week home nursing course for twenty six Washington women. The class meets two hours each Monday in high school room 101 and aims to empower women to care for the sick at home. Mrs Tweeten has three years nursing experience plus four and a half years active service.
Allied forces pressure Japanese in the Coral Sea as MacArthur says the enemy has been repulsed and attacks will continue. British and Australian observers note ongoing battles with Japanese losses while invasion threats to Australia and India remain.
The capital hailed Allied forces victory near Australia as navy departments and General MacArthur headquarters confirmed Japan suffered the war’s greatest setback with heavy Japanese naval losses in the Coral Sea engagement. Official and unofficial reports from London and Australian bases supported the claim of Allied success since Monday.
Members of Leon Beatty post gather at the Legion rooms Sunday afternoon to attend the funeral of Mrs. Milt Denison mother of two post members. The service is set for 2:30 p.m. at the Baptist church.
