Revision of plans abandons cantonment type for a permanent steel brick facility. A 500 doctor intern training center, 200 more acres, nurses' home, laundry, power plants, and a 1 014 bed capacity with allowance for 600 more beds. Contracts let May 16 with hospital completion by Nov 15 and total cost four million dollars.
Lieut. H. C. Brandt of Council Bluffs, one of three dentist brothers in the armed forces, returns with the Marblehead to reunite with his wife in Manila Bay area. He was stationed at Cavite naval base and will visit his parents Dr and Mrs C. C Brandt in a few weeks.
SHENANDOAH Mrs Harriette G McCullough state W C T U president favors banning liquor for the duration of the war. She says prohibition education will continue regardless of return. She cites 132531375 pounds of sugar and syrups used last year in making beer.
Edwin Tracy of Muscatine pleaded not guilty to assault with intent to murder and robbery with aggravation after a Thursday preliminary hear ing in justice court. Bound to the grand jury under $5,000 bonds on each count, Tracy is accused of slugging Wilbur Ochil tree of Tipton and robbing him of about $400 on March 25.
Iowa City The University registrar reports 1 048 students filed for degrees or certificates at the eighty second annual commencement Sunday afternoon in Iowa Field House. The figure is 94 fewer than the 1941 spring total.
Grinnell college will enroll four Japanese American evacuees from the Pacific coast in classes before semester end. Dean Henry S. Conard said the students were chosen from 1500 evacuated Japanese slated for inland confinement and noted they are American citizens.
At a Washington County Republican Dinner in the Y club nearly 150 attendees heard Lt. Gov. B. B. Hickenlooper outline a direct course for liberty and unity across parties. Earl G. Miller, secretary of state, spoke briefly on his views if nominated. Several other state candidates addressed the crowd. Tom Martin sent a letter.
The House Ways and Means Committee appeared unsympathetic to the Treasury proposal to cut individual income tax exemptions. Administration supporters and opponents alike warned the plan would shift the burden to middle income groups with taxes potentially rising five to six times compared with earlier recommendations.
A class in advanced first aid instruction was organized at the Y last night with 25 members. The class is part of the county Red Cross war work program and will be taught by Dr. Keith Droz for ten hours over five evenings.
In Washington county, 18 637 people registered for sugar rationing over four days. Of these, 15 804 were allotted rationing books while 2 833 were denied due to excess sugar on hand. Seventeen hundred forty eight did not register and total county population is 20 055 per 1940 census.
Robert Dean Wade 23 of Iowa county near Wellman was arraigned before Justice HE Bovee on rape charges. He waived preliminary hearing and was ordered held to the grand jury with bonds set at 5000. The female complainant, 18, alleges the attack northwest of town en route to Washington after a Wellman dance. County Attorney John C. Owen led for the state. Attorney L J Kehoe defended Wade.
A passenger train wreck near Bainbridge Georgia killed three crew members when an engine exploded and derailed several coaches. Coastline officials withheld victims names and said no soldiers aboard the train were injured.
Washington May 18 plan to curtail non essential transportation sparked speculation of bans on petting parties and possible cancellations of football and other athletic events. The Sunday driver may disappear while officials insist the plan will not be a hardship. The government aims to purchase excess tires from motorists under an OPA price schedule.
An army B-25 bomber crashed in swamp near Osler Field Louisiana killing six officers and one enlisted man. The crash occurred yesterday while the cause is not stated in surviving reports.
A large hybrid seed corn company in Iowa seeks 100 men and boys for detasseling corn this summer starting around July 10. High school age boys eligible. Register now with Mrs. Albert Lay, supervisor of the Employment Service, above the Nicola and Harmon store on the north side of the square. The office notes additional harvest help inquiries from farmers in the area.
Des Moines reports that Clovee K. Huston the Romanian legation second secretary, along with Iowa newsmen Jack N. Fletcher Gean Gratfis and Harold Denny are among four exchanges listed by the state department. Axis authorities plan swaps with enemy newsmen and diplomats interned in America.
Price Administrator Leon Henderson announced a revised basic gasoline ration for non essential motorists in the east set at two or three gallons per week. The western New York and Pennsylvania areas along with West Virginia were taken out of the rationing zone.
The census indicates there are 17 retail stores for each wholesale establishment of the common type. The crash impact remains undetermined.
At a Washington board of education meeting last night three teachers were elected for the next school year. Opal Menger continues as speech teacher at the high school and junior college, filling the post started in January after Ruth Floor resigned mid year. Hildred Newcomer of Grinnell takes Marie Landau’s Lincoln school spot, as Landau leaves to study for a degree at the State University of Iowa. Elaine Thompson will teach at Stewart school succeeding Mildred Riepe, who left to take a Burlington position near Sperry. Thompson is a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College with strong recommendations.
Seven years ago this week Darrell Ross announced the opening of Ross Motor Service in Washington. The strictly service garage has never taken on a new car agency and concentrates on automotive repair. Dick Ross and his team were among the first in the United States to purchase Bear equipment for their shop.
Allied and Japanese forces clash in the Coral Sea as 17 enemy ships are reported sunk and air and sea battles rage on the fifth day. Officials caution on losses while Japan moves ships and transports toward the supply routes to America and Port Moresby.
Mrs. Milt Denison dies this afternoon at her East Main street home after months of illness. Funeral plans are undecided but may be Sunday at 2 30 p m in the Baptist church. The couple observed their golden wedding anniversary last month. Survived by husband, a daughter Cecile at home, and two sons Charles and Dale of Washington.
