Dr. Frank L. Mott director of the University of Iowa school of journalism and 1920 Pulitzer prize winner will receive a congratulatory dinner in Iowa City next Sunday More than 2000 invitations have been sent out to the event for his research on the history of magazines.
Local talent returns home May 16 as the symphony orchestra of Iowa State Teachers College presents a program centered on faculty works. Conducting the 0 piece program are Carl Wirth Anthony Donato and Russell Baum of the college music department.
Delaine Johnson age 4 of Stanton is in serious condition at Red Oak hospital after a runaway team dragged him 250 yards under a corn planter near a gate. He had brought his father Virgil Johnson’s lunch when the horses broke loose and the child suffered skull fracture and incur fatal injuries.
OTTUMWA reports the purchase of the Mary K. Harper house by the College Women's Club of Iowa as a retirement home for former college women. State treasurer Miss M. E. Sturtevant announced the purchase price at $16,000.
Madrid farmer Bill B Reynolds finds 1200 in gold bank notes wrapped in burlap in a haymow near a post. The money tied to a past claim by his former farm hand Peter Smidth who hanged himself two years ago. Correspondence last winter failed to reveal Danish relatives.
C10. in Iowa officials protested to the State executive council the dismissal of a dozen state employees said to be union members and threatened retaliation if they were not reinstated. Each member of the executive council, including Governor Wilson, received letters. Governor Wilson said his letter was delivered in person. The 12 employees were on the Statehouse custodian's force and were dismissed between Feb 15 and Apr 1 this year.
Des Moines records show the state executive council approved a 2.40 expenditure for a six months subscription to Billboard magazine theatrical publication. The sales tax division will use it to study circus and carnival routes to plan itineraries for tax collection. Officials say last year these venues yielded 90000 in revenue.
Washington Concert Band performs in Central Park on Wednesday at 8 p.m. as part of Music Week. Conductor HAL REISTER leads. program includes Sunshine and Roses, Invictus March, Roseland Waltzes, Neptunes Carnival Overture, Pentacrest March, and various dances and intermezzos.
Rock Island Arsenal in Illinois raises output to 1917 levels amid unsettled world conditions. Staffing grows from 2100 to 3200, with max wartime hiring earlier in 1918. guards protect weapon details as the plant turns out tanks carriages for anti air guns field artillery pieces airplanes and Browning machine guns.
Rock Island lines in Iowa will spend about 1 794 per mile for upgrades in 1939, totaling 3 754 000. Projects include 83 miles of new 112 pound rail, 215 miles of repairs and relining, 71 bridge tasks, and 74 miles of new signal systems. Maintenance should reach 1 975 000 plus, with flashlight signals and gates planned at 76 grade crossings in cooperation with Iowa authorities.
The University of Iowa chamber symphony orchestra impressed a high school audience with a splendid concert last evening. Conductor Prof. Phillip Greeley Clapp guided principal players with precise tempo and dynamics, eliciting enthusiastic applause and thoughtful encores from a skilled, cohesive ensemble.
Iowa's ordinary life insurance in force rose to 1.459 billion dollars at end of 1938, up 27.2 million or 1.90 percent from 1937, per Life Insurance Sales Research Bureau. Nationwide ordinary life insurance increased 1.4 percent to 75.695 billion, with 34.064 million policies in force. Texas led states with 6.8 percent rise. Pacific Coast and South Atlantic regions also posted gains.
At the Washington county school convention Lester B. Krabill was re-elected county superintendent for a third term starting next September. The event, held in the courthouse with attendance from all town and township school groups, also saw Carl Oldfield, I. F. Kraemer, and W. W. Twinam re-elected to the county board of education for six-year terms. B. C. Foster, FP. A. Dunbar, and Miss Althea Montgomery are hold-over members.
Lester B. Krabill was re elected for a third three year term as Washington County Superintendent at a county school convention held this afternoon. He has headed the county’s schools for the past six years.
The county education board and convention delegates for townships and districts were announced. Names include Ainsworth J B Pressley Prighton J F Kraemer Crawfordsville Frank E Gault Kalona Dr S S Ware Noble William Eichelberger Richmond Stanley Vodicka Riverside Mrs Cecil Doud Rubio Eugene Morgan and others. A separate note records Mrs Charles Faulkner and daughter Marjorie visiting the Howard Lee home in Olds on Sunday.
President Roosevelt presented a second comprehensive reorganization plan to Congress claiming annual federal savings of 1.25 million dollars. The plan abolishes the national bituminous coal commission and transfers its functions to the interior department. It also moves several agencies among departments and merges others, with a third plan slated for the next session.
County Agent J. W. Chandler spoke to the Rotary Club outlining Washington county’s rank in hogs, sheep, cattle, and horses, plus 2019 tractors and 1400 radios. He noted 40 percent of 360000 acres is first-grade land and corn yields averaging 42 bushels per acre.
Nancy McCreedy, two year old daughter of Dr Clif ford McCreedy of Aledo formerly of Ainsworth, died after illness from a streptococcal infection. The death leaves an older sibling in the family.
Sweden Denmark Norway and Finland rejected Hitler’s anti aggression pact proposal. Poland’s parliament granted President Moscicki extraordinary dictatorial powers in military and economic matters until November 1 amid wartime unity. Pope Pius XII proposed a Vatican mediation conference including France Britain Poland Germany and Italy to resolve Polish German and French Italian disputes.
At last evening’s Y M C A board meeting John Winga was re elected president for the coming year Orville Elder was named vice president Fred J Stewart recording secretary and Leslie Dunlap treasurer. Winga also named H L Walker Leslie Dunlap and Cloid Willita to form a committee to plan extending Y services for rural young men. Standing committees for the year will be named at the next board meeting.
Kansas City May 9 More than a third of the United Methodist Church bishops received new assignments under the newly unified church plan. The conference committee on ministry designated districts and residences, moving J Ralph Magee to the Iowa district with Des Moines as headquarters and placing G Bromley Oxnam in Boston after previously serving Iowa and Nebraska.
