Iowa Tornadoes Cause Moderate Damage Across Rural Areas
Storm system spawning tornadoes moved through western Iowa causing roof and barn damage in Shelby Clarke and Decatur counties. A twister near Harlan damaged a shed and the Weihs home while another near Osceola wrecked a farm house and a barn. Des Moines sightings reported with no injuries.

Memorial Day meeting set for May 12 in City Hall
Memorial Day representatives from all organizations involved in parades and cemetery programs are to meet Monday May 12 at 8 p m in the City Hall meeting room to plan events. Raymond J Miller Jr a Washington police officer with five years service and four years as assistant chief has resigned effective May 22 after a two week earned vacation. He has accepted a law enforcement related position with the United States Government and will be sent to Washington DC for several weeks before a permanent assignment is made. Mrs Miller and their three children will remain in Washington until a permanent post is secured.

Rain brings beneficial moisture to area fields
The official weather observer reports a half inch of rain, .53 inches, during the night and early morning. The rainfall halted field work briefly but provides needed moisture for recently planted fields and helps those still to be worked, as farmers completed most planting in the past week.
