Tornadoes hit Iowa towns injuring twenty five

United Press International reports eight Iowa communities suffered tornado damage Thursday night as violent storms moved through the state for the third time this week. At least 25 people were injured, with extensive damage around Waterloo and Boone, including toppled roofs, shattered windows, and mobile homes overturned.

Johnson Urges Southerners to Ignore Extremist Rhetoric

President Johnson on the Appalachia tour urged fellow Southerners to ignore tatt ered and discredited banners of racial extremists. He spoke at an integrated breakfast with 1,250 attendees including Gov. Sanders and Georgia legislators, stressing unity and listening to uplift the poverty stricken region. The crowd surged forward as he greeted supporters after a 15 hour day across six states.

Memorial Day Plans Discussed At Meeting

Kenneth Davison commander of the VFW presided at a meeting Tuesday evening to plan the annual Memorial Day observance in Washington. This year the parade and services in honor of the nation's war dead will be held on Saturday May 30. The VFW and parade sections go to Woodlawn Cemetery while the American Legion and its parade section go to Elm Grove Cemetery. Details of the program will be announced soon.

Farm Tractor Accident Injures West Chester Man

Robert Stout was injured in a tractor accident on his farm one mile south and one quarter mile west of West Chester on Thursday morning. He was taken to Washington County Hospital in good condition.

Six runaway girls found in California

LAKEWOOD Calif UPD Police said two Fort Worth Texas men drove to California with six runaway girls from three families aged up to 16 plus a four year old toddler. The girls were penniless but in good condition and planned to return to Fort Worth. Authorities identified Elton Fennell 20 and Wilburn Hick 17. The group was taken into juvenile custody after a housewife’s suspicion when a girl asked to call her father for money. A statewide Texas alert covered the other five youths.

Washington High School Music Yearend Concert Delights Crowd

The Washington Community High School Music Department presented a combined instrumental and vocal concert under Alan Bergstrom and Vernon Feuerhelm to a large audience as part of National Music Week. The symphonic band performed works from Beethoven to Jazz highlighted by Folk Legend and a drum solo in March To The Battle of Jazz. The choir delivered a haunting Hospodi Pomilus and Kyrie Eleison with strong dramatic presentation. Soprano Sara Kephart impressed with Italian Street Song while the Swinging Demons and Glee Clubs provided lively number after number including Hello Dolly.

Riot Outbreak at Anamosa Prison Fallout Prompt Prosecution

Officials plan to file charges against 16 to 24 inmates involved in a three hour riot at Anamosa Iowa men’s reformatory. Tear gas, gunfire and barricaded inmates in the cannery followed a protest over disciplinary reports. Inmate Joseph James of Des Moines is named as the trigger.

Desegregation Efforts Face Rally and Protests in Several States

Civil rights leaders pledged no compromise on total desegregation in Nashville with demonstrations that have led to about 180 arrests in 12 days. White and Black picketers disrupted segregated restaurants. police jailed 49 demonstrators and three leaders on contempt charges. In Memphis, 30 demonstrators protested a tea room for five hours as 500 students watched. The Methodist Church proposed a fund to aid arrested ministers and laymen, while disciplining pastors who oppose racial policy. In Little Rock a white student was struck for dining with Black peers. four girls were jeered but unharmed. New Orleans and Albany reports feature Wallace remarks and rezoning rulings supporting integration, with Urban League head Whitney Young warning of potential violence and a summer national emergency.

Coin Club to Meet at Washington County Fair Grounds

Death of W T Carson at 83 in Washington

W T Carson 83 died Friday at his home 1126 East Washington Street after a week of ill health. A longtime plumber since 1916 and a leading Mason, he served in Washington Masonic bodies and Kaaba Shrine. Funeral Monday 10 30 a m at Jones Funeral Home with Elm Grove burial. He was born March 28 1881 in Chicago and survived by wife two sons Tom and Bob a daughter Helen Smart six stepchildren six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
