President Kennedy told AFL CIO United Auto Workers to share responsibility for price stability and urged union support for Democratic candidates. He praised past UAW contracts for price stability and urged wage policies tied to productivity while Reuther voiced alignment with price stability and urged restraint to aid the economy.
President Kennedy told UAW listeners that inflationary wage price hikes must be avoided by both sides. He spoke for a single voice at bargaining tables and emphasized free enterprise, denying any plan to fix prices or wages in peacetime or intervene in every labor dispute.
Memorial Day observance planning will occur at a Wednesday evening meeting in the Legion rooms at city hall. Walter Carr, past commander of the VFW post, will chair the session at 7:30 p.m., with representatives from local patriotic groups urged to attend. A parade and ceremonies honoring area war dead are planned as in past years.
A bill awaiting President Kennedy's signature would pay farmers who plant approved non surplus crops on land taken out of wheat and feed grains this year. Supporters say it would reduce the cost of 1962 government programs by limiting payments to half the rate given to farmers who harvest nothing. The Senate approved the measure by voice vote after little debate. it had House backing and bipartisan farm-area support.
The two week Mission to Britain ends May 9 with 59 Methodist ministers, including Rev. Lloyd Latta of Washington. Latta worked in Burslem Stoke-on-Trent assisting Rev. Jan Wills, training leaders, and conducting multiple daily services. He visited Epworth John Wesley’s home, plans trips to Paris and Berlin, and will return to Washington by May 19 to resume pulpit duties May 2.
Dan Coon, Washington High School junior, is selected to attend Hawkeye Boys State at Camp Dodge as a representative. A local selection panel including George Cordes and Don Lawless chose finalists from 10 to 12 juniors, with Latta and Beranek as alternates. Washington American Legion post will sponsor the event and host a post-dinner program tonight.
Dudley Duane Greiner of Washington faced a charge of failure to control after a one car crash on highway 92, three miles west of West Chester. Passenger John Alberts and Greiner sustained only minor scratches as the 1956 auto was demolished. Iowa Trooper James Richart investigated the incident, noting a tire slip and mud caused the rollover.
Washington city council votes not to shift clocks for summer 1962. No regional daylight saving, plus plans for a stop light at South Iowa Avenue and West Madison. Sewer repairs, well pump work, and an active street repair program noted alongside sanitation equipment delivery.
Children entering kindergarten in the Washington Community School District will be registered on May 9 and 10. Stewart School hosts at 1 30 p m Wednesday and Lincoln School at the same time Thursday. Parents must bring birth certificates and ensure children are five by September 1, 1962.
Un confirmed tornadoes and hurricane like winds battered the Midwest Monday night. Trucks overturned injuring drivers and a trailer house trapped a mother and three children near Dix, Illinois. Winds toppled a radio tower at Sterling and disrupted power across multiple states.
Funeral services for William Gage will be held at 1 30 p m Wednesday in the Powell Funeral Home at Keota. The Rev Martin Manning will officiate with burial in Indian Creek Cemetery near Columbus Junction.
Manuel Perez aged 79 of 800 West Third Street died at 4 p.m. Monday May 7 1962 at Washington County Hospital after illness since January. Funeral services are set for 9 a.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. James E. Grubb. rosary at 7 p.m. Tuesday. A native of Huehuetoca Mexico he was born November 5 1883 and lived here 35 years. He was a Rock Island Railroad retiree and a member of St. James Catholic Church. Surviving are his wife one stepson Jesus Sotelo four grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Santos Hernandez and Joseph Sotelo of Washington were reared in his home.
Republicans pressed for a full investigation into Billie Sol Estes, citing a Texas attorney general letter alleging a close relationship between Estes and Agriculture Department officials. They accused the department of favoritism, citing Estes's November 1961 cotton committee appointment and a high bond set for grain storage despite increased capacity.
A barn at the Marlin Bitting farm three miles southwest of Wyman burned after a lightning strike during an electrical storm around 11 PM. Firefighters from Crawfordsville arrived shortly after midnight, saved nearby buildings, and extinguished the blaze while the hay-filled barn could not be saved. Bitting drove three miles in heavy rain to report the fire after telephone service failed.
The high school symphony band and vocal groups present a combined spring concert titled Spring Fling in the new gym starting at 8 p m. Alan Bergstrom directs the instrumental portion and Vernon Feuerhelm the vocal selections. The program features a mix of Dixieland pieces Broadway tunes sacred songs and a musical satire narrated by Tom Wright.
Program plans for the annual YWCA mother daughter banquet are completed. The event will be held in the Y gym at 8 p m Friday. All mothers and daughters in the community are urged to attend. There is no admission charge. Several local churches have planned desserts or dinners earlier in the evening with the entire groups to convene at the Y at 8 o'clock for the program.
Over an inch of rain drenched Washington on Monday night with a sharp thunderstorm. Officially 1.10 inches fell as brilliant lightning lit the sky and winds rose, but no local damage reported. Lightning caused a house fire in the Wyman area. hail also touched Riverside.
Central Iowa rivers rose sharply after three thunderstorm bands moved through Monday causing extensive damage. Skunk River near Oskaloosa and Des Moines River from Tracy to Ottumwa were expected to crest above bankful with several feet of rise. Damage ran into hundreds of thousands of dollars with Davenport and Newton areas hardest hit. wind gusts reached 83 mph at Council Bluffs and 70 mph near Davenport.
T A Michels 69 former Washington attorney died Monday at his Tipton home after strokes. He practiced law in Washington before moving eight years ago. Survivors include wife Mary Welch two daughters four sisters and a brother. Funeral Thursday at 2 p m at Sheetz and Cahn Funeral Home Tipton with burial in the Masonic Cemetery. Born November 6 1892 in Pana Illinois.
Washington Chamber of Commerce board met Secretary Cub Lehrer to discuss the May 22 arrival of an industrial goodwill group from the Iowa Manufacturers Association. About 80 visitors are expected for a noon YMCA luncheon as part of a state wide tour and to boost local industrial liaison and chamber affairs.
