Scientists Balloon Flight Yields Valuable Medical Data
Two Navy scientists Alfred H. Mikesell and Cmdr. Malcolm D. Ross rode an 80-foot open gondola to eight miles altitude for 16 hours. They aimed to study stars with a telescope but succeeded mainly in gathering medical data on reactions to extreme cold and rarefied air. Patient Waiting Solves Beer Theft Mystery
Police and sheriff's officers arrested two Washington youths after patient surveillance led to a beer theft case near the Diamond Inn. Three cases stolen last Friday from a storage shack two miles west of Washington were recovered. Charges of breaking and entering filed against 18 year old John William Carey. his 17 year old accomplice released to parents pending decision.

Red Oak reports Edwin Sueppel is recovering after a highway crash last weekend. Doctors say pneumonia risk has passed and he won’t be moved to Washington for about three weeks. He suffered multiple fractures and a deep head wound requiring stitches, now in a cast at Murphy Memorial Hospital.

William Squire 63 of Burlington dies at Burlington Hospital Tuesday night after a three week illness following a heart attack. He was a welder for Burlington Railroad then personnel director at the Burlington ordnance plant during World War II. Survivors include his widow two sisters and several half siblings. Flood Threat Eases as Big Sandy Recedes in Kentucky
Amajor flood scare in eastern Kentucky eased as the Big Sandy River crested at Prestonburg and Martin near 42 feet and began dropping. Officials reported light rain ahead and evacuated low lying areas while 2500 residents across four states sought higher ground. Helicopters aided by pumping water into Prestonsburg where 25 stores flooded and roads were cut but expected to reopen tonight.

Voters approve plan to merge Conesville with Columbus Community
In Columbus Junction and Conesville, voters approved merging Conesville and Orono Township into the Columbus Community School District effective July 1 1958.
