Principal John V. Phieger announces 100 seniors as graduation candidates for Washington High School with ceremonies on May 28 in the school gym. Also planned are the Baccalaureate on May 25 and Class Day on May 22 in the same venue.
Washington High School singers and band members present their annual Festival Concert Thursday at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The mixed chorus and concert band join for the finale performing Battle Hymn of the Republic arr Wilhousky. Tickets may be used from season sales or bought at the door.
Twenty six members of the Washington High School Future Farmers of America chapter met Tuesday night to hear reports from the state FFA convention. Jerry Coffin announced plans for the GRA FFA picnic and committees were named for the spring project tour. Attendees at the state convention included Gaylen Jarrard Terry Horn Larry Griggs Joe Wolfer Stanley Soucek Larry Marek Frank Friese Jerry Cline and Allen Wulf. The group received a silver award certificate in the FFA safe corn harvest campaign.
Norman Schoonover marks a five year anniversary owning Schoonover Drug in the same Washington location. The shop was sold from J. E. Lemmon who previously ran the business for about fifty five years. The local staff includes Holger Christensen and several Schoonover family members.
State Senator Allan Vest of Sac City spoke at the YMCA noon meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on voting importance. Bruce Meadows joined the local club today and Roland Baumgartner attended as a guest.
Rep. Charles O. Porter said the United States fired the first atomic test at Eniwetok nine days earlier. He criticized the Atomic Energy Commission for not announcing the firing and quoted scientists who urged public disclosure after each blast.
Iowa Jaycees will hold their annual state road-e-o in Washington on May 17. Qualified students will compete for the right to represent the state at the national contest later this year. Dennis Sorrell of Washington was last year's state winner. Headquarters for contestants will be at the high school and dinner will be served there.
Funeral services for Mary Singer 87 will be held at 9 a m Thursday in St James Catholic Church with Rev T J Lew in charge. Rosary will be recited at 7:30 tonight in the Jones Funeral Home. Miss Singer was born February 15 1871 and died Tuesday May 6 1958.
South east Iowa high school musicians perform in a band concert at Iowa Wesleyan College at 8:15 pm led by Tom Eddy of Wayland. Students hail from Ainsworth Columbus Junction Crawfordsville Mediapolis Olds Danville New London Mt. Union and Wayland. Everett’s Music Co. of Washington sponsors the event with David Price head of the Wesleyan music dept featured as a clarinet soloist.
President Eisenhower accepted Marion B. Folsom’s resignation as secretary of health education and welfare. He named Arthur S. Flemming to succeed him, with Flemming to take over late July if Senate confirmation is obtained. Flemming, 52, is president of Ohio Wesleyan University and former director of the Office of Defense Mobilization.
Former Lt. Gov. Leo Elthon says William Nicholas is not a vote getter and is the weakest Republican candidate for lieutenant governor. Elthon of Fertile Iowa backs William Murray after passing on his own run. Nicholas faces opponent Eithen who notes Loveless race had 13 000 fewer votes against a relative unknown candidate.
Timothy J. Mahoney, 49, attempted a bank robbery in Oroville California after four days without food. He fainted from malnutrition as teller Pat Thelander pushed $3,000 toward him and fled. He was treated at Butte County Hospital for a suspected heart attack and then jailed for federal authorities.
In Davenport Iowa John Roshek a 52 year old Dubuque businessman faced a 13th day of tax trial after testimony detailed family living expenses and department store invoices. Prosecutors outlined purchases billed to Roshek’s store and cross examined his handling of home improvements including marble from Cassavian Carrara Co Italy and Dunbar Furniture pieces in New York.
President Eisenhower, in a national broadcast and GOP dinner for congressional members, pledges to help elect Republicans who support his defense reorganization foreign aid and reciprocal trade plans. He urges unity and notes strong party backing from the dinner audience of 156 House members 35 senators five cabinet members and White House staffers.
Graduate students from the State University of Iowa visit Washington High School juniors in Dubuque to discuss results of vocational guidance tests. They hold one on one conferences twice weekly to explain findings and advise on future schooling as part of an expanded guidance program starting next year.
George Chambers named to teach the new distributive education course at Washington High School next fall. He spoke at Washington Y's Men with Principal John Phleger and James Ribbeck listed as assistant principal. Ed Nelson state supervisor attended and Chambers and Nelson had met students distributing application blanks.
Two Navy scientists rode a balloon to about 42 000 feet near Mora Minnesota then landed southeast of Dubuque Iowa unharmed after a frigid night. They observed stars and planets with a telescope in the high altitude and tested human response to thin air for future manned satellite flights. The flight launched from Crosby Minnesota and ended near Mora before sunrise.
Washington’s Russell Bing Miller will become a state Junior Chamber of Commerce vice president on July 1. He was elected among 10 vice presidents at the state Jaycee convention in Davenport and has long led local Jaycee efforts across Washington. Attendees from Washington included Miller and nine others: Dale Doggett, Maurice Henry, Leo Beauchamp, Leon Hillman, Bill Perdock, Bob Ross, Cal Larsen, Sam Young, and Rodney Davison.
Amos Graber 46 lifelong Wayland resident died at his home three miles southwest of Wayland at 3 a m after several months of cancer. He was born August 30, 1912 near Wayland and married Laurine Nebel in 1933. Survived by widow three daughters Patricia Zelda and Mrs Daniel Untermahr and son Anthony, and many brothers and sisters. Funeral arrangements pending at Zehr Funeral Home.
The United States Britain and France announced that other Western nations such as Italy may take part in a possible East West foreign ministers meeting or summit. The move counters Soviet parity demands and aims to strengthen NATO unity ahead of talks in Moscow.
Washington High School students will elect a new president on Friday May 16. An election assembly on Thursday May 15 will host speeches and campaigning in a convention like event. Seniors depart at 2 40 p m on assembly day since they do not vote.
Local mushroom hunters say the season is at its peak with daily tallies of success and oddities. John H. Simmering brought a seven ounce specimen and a bushel total was found by the Simmering family on river bottom land. Ed Chabal presented a cluster of ten sponge type mushrooms growing from a single root.
Eighth grade students from St James school and rural Washington area schools will take language ability and algebra tests at 1 15 pm Friday in the high school auditorium. This is part of preparations for entering high school next fall. Orientation day for the next term is August 25 and all Washington high freshmen will attend. Questions about scheduling and matters will be discussed with new high school students at this meeting.
Billy Graham told 15,500 at the Cow Palace that pride is the root of sin, equating pride with greed ambition hatred and intolerance. He described Satan as powerful and blinded by those who do not read or understand the Bible. About 1000 people came forward to make a decision for Christ.
The Iowa five day forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms tonight and Thursday. Temperatures will be near normal with highs in the 60s and lows around the 50s. A cooling trend develops Friday and Saturday with a warm up by Sunday and Monday. precipitation expected from south to north between a quarter and half an inch through Friday.
