British Give Mr Gandhi His Liberty

Gandhi was released by British authorities in Poona during a three week fast as part of a purification campaign. He had been jailed for a year for civil disobedience and his doctors fear his death is near unless he survives the fast. If he recovers he may quit politics to focus on aiding India's untouchables.

Beaumont man awarded for saving life at Sun Oil refinery

W. M. Jackson of Beaumont received the Wir-A gold medal from the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association for saving M. E. Shelton from electrocution at the Sun Oil Company refinery on August 23, 1930.

Poppy Poppy Chairman Seeks Women Aid for Poppy Day

Women of Washington are asked to call Mrs. Baldrige poppy chairman of the Leon Beatty unit to schedule time for distributing poppies on Poppy Day Saturday May 27. The unit expects 40 to 60 workers and invites volunteers from other organizations to support the American Legion Auxiliary fund for veterans families and war memorials.

Washington Broadcast Set For May 20 from WOC-WHO

The Better Washington club in Washington Iowa sponsors a 4:00 to 4:30 pm Saturday May 20 broadcast on station WOC-WHO. Ralph Scott president and a committee will arrange cars for the trip while Dr. Robert Hender leverages his ties with the program director and the Little Symphony orchestra to arrange the show at no cost to the club.

In Washington a U S chamber of commerce dinner highlighted tension between business leaders and government. The joke centered on keeping government out of business as Jesse Jones of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation sat nearby with a mortgage on every formal suit. Officers to Open Probe in Rath Shooting Case

Henry Rath is held at the Washington city jail pending arraignment on charges linked to the Saturday evening shooting that seriously wounded his wife at their home 115 North Second avenue. County Attorney George Morrison says an official investigation will begin today to determine the charges. The Rath residence remains under health quarantine for meningitis as Dr. H L Hendricks tests a culture. The couple’s14 year old son Duane is ill and the quarantine is enforced.

Prohibition Urged by Dr. U S Smith in Washington Address

Dr. U S Smith of Fairfield urged retention of Prohibition at a Washington church union meeting held at United Presbyterian church. He argued repeal would not prosper communities, cited rising barley production and spending on essentials, and called for sobriety, conviction, and spiritual awakening.

Thank Offering at Methodist Church Service Held

The foreign missionary thank offering service was held at the Methodist church yesterday morning. Dr. F. C. C. Witaig wan gave the address and spoke on world friendship and mission work. The bank offering totaled about $130 with $70 from the Women’s Foreign Missionary Society and $58.56 from the Alma Hearne Holland Society.

Two Portland police officers reported a moonlight rainbow phenomenon at 4:25 am on the morning of the California earthquake, describing an unusual meteorological sight in Portland.

Conventions Select Repeal and Retention Delegates

At a county gathering Michels and Peet were chosen to face voters on June 20 and Des Moines in July for the Iowa repeal convention. Repeal backers elected Michels as delegate with Whittaker alternate while anti repeal group named Peet for platform support and Elder as alternate.
