He had been jailed for a year for civil disobedience and his doctors fear his death is near unless he survives the fast. If he recovers he may quit politics to focus on aiding India's untouchables.

Officers to Open Probe in Rath Shooting Case
Henry Rath is held at the Washington city jail pending arraignment on charges linked to the Saturday evening shooting that seriously wounded his wife at their home 115 North Second avenue. County Attorney George Morrison says an official investigation will begin today to determine the charges.
