Atlantic farmer Atlantic-Frank Olson, 33, was smitten by a broken back after the cow he milked bolted and fell on him. Physicians reported his condition critical.
A Rock Island freight train derailed near Evans when a split rail failed. Seven cars left the track. brakeman Wilbur Beadle sustained a minor shoulder injury.
Waterloo Mississippi transport area judge commits 26 year old Joh Tharp after guilty verdict for bicycle theft. Tharp has prior terms at Fort Madison penitentiary Black Mawk county jail and Anamosa reformatory. He claimed the bike was for riding the country in search of employment.
A farming note explains that picking blossoms in the right areas boosts fall apple yield. It states blossoms around the tree edge favor larger apples, while central blossoms should be picked to avoid reducing crop size.
Kenneth Wagner of Mount Pleasant was chosen as Sioux County farm agent to replace H. B. Nichols who resigned to join Cedar Valley Farm Business association as fieldman. Wagner is an Iowa State College graduate.
Local agent Frank Sponar and assistant Larry Delaney received $100 each from the Standard OU Co for disarming and capturing a bandit who attempted to rob a bulk station on April 13. The bandit, Philip S. Reynolds, was later sentenced to Fort Madison penitentiary. his planned loot would have been $50 if successful.
Thomas McFarland 54 returned to Iowa after a body found in the Missouri River in August 1936 was identified as him. For a year and eight months he had been considered dead, a murder victim whose body was weighted with stones and bound with wires. Five relief workers identified the corpse, and burial occurred at Dakota City. Ned McFarland had been living in New York City.
Des Moines attorney Rex Fowler startled the Iowa supreme court during an appeal, calling the bench you fellows. He paused to correct himself, saying I mean your honors as the five justices chuckled and he continued his argument.
Lester Jameson of Nichols is in critical condition after a double barreled shotgun wound near his heart following an attack on Hoelirietta Miller, 24, in a jealousy dispute. Sheriff Nesper notes the incident involved self-inflicted fire and a knife assault prior to the shooting. 1938 sales tax returns show Iowa merchants down 6.2 percent, from 39,428 retailers surveyed, reflecting a modest national downturn.
Des Moines, May 7. Iowa official Byron Allen reports duplicate pension applications under varied names cause problems in the old age assistance division. Seventeen April cases showed up, with some instances due to genuine confusion or name changes. A one year penalty for fraud is deemed sufficient to deter the practice.
About 3 000 carrier pigeons from the Moline Pigeon club Illinois will be released in Washington Sunday morning at 8 30 weather permitting. Coops will be shipped tonight with a second release by American Racing Pigeon Union of Davenport. The aim is to compare flight times home to the Tri Cities with a reported earlier record around 60 miles an hour. The 1938 schedule starts with Washington May may 15 Eldon and Aldmont Missouri with further rounds planned.
Rome reports Hitler and Mussolini have reached a joint program for Italo German collaboration. They pledge mutual support for colonial expansion and a broad military entente to counter communism, tying together Italy Germany Yugoslavia Hungary Romania Bulgaria and Poland.

Nineteen candidates had filed by noon for the June 6 party tickets. H W Mineart of Brighton sought the 1939 supervisor term and Wilbert Rose of Crawfordsville the 1940 term. Three candidates still had not filed, including S Russell Bell and Rose, with papers due by late afternoon.
London reports that on May 7 the British ambassador in Berlin was told to press Germany to urge Prague to make concessions to Germany. Britain and France say the situation in Czechoslovakia is the worst yet and threatens better relations between London and Berlin.
Stemple White brother of J. Martin White of Washington died this morning at his home in Oklahoma. A former Brighton resident his burial will take place in Brighton cemetery Monday afternoon at two o clock.
Wes Custer’s dog killed several Dougall chickens on the southwest edge of town. Dougall fired at the dog from across a fence, killing it. Mayor’s court may fine Dougall for discharging a firearm inside town limits while the Custer family hopes to settle the dispute peacefully.
Four people injured when their car struck an Avondale street car in Cedar Rapids. Bernice Meyer sustained facial wounds requiring seventy two stitches. Others injured were Bernard Lardon Daly Raftis and Joan Matthiensen all reported with varying injuries.
Chinese troops shifted pressure to the west part of Shantung province and reported an advance of thirty miles along the Hankow Pieping railway. The move threatens the Japanese right flank as intense air activity and guerrilla bands were driven off near Pieping.
Chicago report details Dr. Herman Colan and his wife refusing eye removal for their five week old daughter Helaine Judith Colan to curb a malignant tumor. Doctors warned removing the eyes could prevent death within eight weeks as tumor tentacles threatened the brain.
The Washington high school girls sextet in the small vocal group event Class AA and A received a good rating. Vocalists and ensembles from Charles City Eagle Grove Oelwein West Des Moines and others earned superior and excellent ratings. The Washington Webster City trombone soloist also scored good. The marching band planned to perform later in the state festival final.
Alumni from twelve classes will gather in Iowa City on June 4 for reunions. Students range from the 1878 group aged over 80 to those who left UI five years ago. About fifty classes across colleges are eligible, with reunions spaced every five years from 1878 through 1933. The group had been returning from a dance at Solon.
Mr. and Mrs. CC E Binkert and two children moved into the residence at 845 South Iowa Avenue. Mr. Binkert becomes manager of the Graham store, arriving Wednesday. Mrs. Binkert and the children came from Rockford Illinois yesterday. The family attends the Presbyterian church. The children are Bobbie seven and Carol three. Mr. Binkert enjoys golf and other sports.
