Washington notes report a wide ranging investigation into the post office department led by Postmaster General Payne. He cites a $5,000 increase in contingent funds and says investigations will cover first class post offices and annual receipts totaling about half a million dollars.
Washington May 7 Count Cass, the Russian ambassador, sent a strong categorical denial of reports that Russia accepts German peace terms. The embassy statement rejects any suggestion of a Russian shift in position and emphasizes continued Allied coordination.
Reports from Washington and Berlin allege a diplomatic spat over Miss Langham's name in the diplomatic list with Russia and Germany denying improper placement. Separately, Secretary Wilson approves Weather Service consolidation moving Grand Haven to Grand Rapids with Snyder placed in charge of the Grand Rapids bureau. A note from Washington states the US pursued a naturalization treaty with Koumama but faced reluctance amid a rule on voluntary recognition.
The State Department received a cablegram from U S Consul General McWade at Canton stating bubonic plague is rising in Canton Honan Shuntak Yeon Kung and Yuengshan and famine is worsening in Kwangel. A U S missionary reports that a victim's body had been eaten.
New Orleans May News cites a reliable abroad source saying the Nicaraguan revolution continues. Government forces cannot cross Lake Nicaragua to strike fortifications at Fort San Carlos and elsewhere along the San Juan river. Fort Castillo and a Zelaya gunboat are in rebel hands.
Ten coal operators from Indiana plus individuals respond to a government suit by admitting a past meeting to discuss prices but deny forming an unlawful price fixing cartel. They claim their output was small, that prices were below market levels, and that the agreement did not affect wider markets.
Milwaukee on May 7 Mere A L Schissler known as Lillian Desmond now says Fr William Kreul of Watertown Wis died by her hand on the night of Nov 26 in a letter to Henry J Killilea her husband's attorney. She states the revolver was in her husband’s hand but fired by her to explain the tragedy.
Evansville Indiana May 7 reports a newly established distillery now in the hands of a receiver. Government inspectors number and measure the still at 13 bushels capacity. A telephone call, a dropped bottle, and a bite from a cat marked misfortune for stockholders before closure. Decatur Illinois May 7 murder charge filed against Edward McCool for shooting W G McNeir a leading local druggist amid jealousy over McCool’s wife.
Columbia Dron works of Port Huron will lay the keel within weeks for the biggest steel steamer on fresh water at its St Clair shipyard. The vessel, 500 feet overall, 442 feet keel, 52 feet beam, 30 feet hold depth with a six foot water bottom, is built for a Cleveland vesselmen syndicate.

Chicago markets show hog receipts 27 000 with bulk sales at 6.56 to 6.95 per hundredweight and varied classes. Cattle receipts 18 000 with steers at 4.50 to 5.70 and heifers 2.25 to 4.00, stockers 2.70 to 4.75. Sheep receipts 13 000 with western lambs 5.10 to 7.50 and native lambs 5.00 to 7.50, spring lambs 6.00 to 6.50. East Buffalo quotes hogs 7.00 to 7.20, sheep and lambs up to 7.40 for best lambs. Calves tops 7.12.
The Mc Cleman bank of Auburn and the De Kalb bank of Waterloo close to make way for a new financial institution. Property for both banks is placed in the hands of receiver Hon. J. D. Leighty who is now in charge.
Svaneville Indiana May 7 The sickness of John Gilbert Shanklin of the Evansville Courier, which once caused fear of a fatal end, has taken a turn toward improvement and he is slowly recovering though those near him remain hopeful.
Panay Illinois May 7 miners in sub-district No 19 were ordered out again. Pan a Moneaqua Niantic and Witt obeyed earlier order. Now about 3000 men are on strike.
Washington on May 7 reports that offerings of 3 and 4 percent bonds under the treasury refunding circular have aggregated 61,259,000 dollars.
Frank E. Moores, Republican, wins a third term as Omaha mayor by about 1000 votes. He defeats Wrastus A. Benson from the bolt faction and Democrat KE Howell in a bitter campaign. Socialist W. M. Moore gathers around 2000 votes in a race marked by intra party strife.
Lebanon Ohio physician Dr M Curry advertises an at home cancer cure with a booklet of methods and testimonials from bankers ministers and citizens. He claims ordinary cancer can be cured in 10 or 20 days and that malignant cases show immediate benefit and eventual cure. Mrs Mary BE Little of Lincolnton NC says her breast cancer measured 12 inches and was cured in 17 days.
Former Aurora mayor Theodore Howard was duped by a man named Vallejo who presented flattering lodges endorsements from the AOU W and induced Howard to indorse two drafts for 65 and 85 dollars. The Anchor and Shield warned the public and a $100 reward was offered for Vallejo’s arrest.
In Dubuque Iowa on May 7 207 workers returned to work after a seven day strike at the Loquois Pearl Button company following a compromise of all differences between management and the labor camp.
In Charlotte Michigan on May 1, Phineas Pallard, janitor of the First National Bank, was shot twice while performing duties at closing time. The revolver used was kept in the cage he occupied, raising questions if the death was murder or self inflicted.
A garbled report describes a janitor clearing debris inside a building. A back door secured by a spring catch shows recent disturbance. The account suggests possible self-inflicted death with a vault undisturbed and fatal bullets entering just above the heart. recovery remains doubtful.
Denver May 7 Baward M Wilson a well known newspaper writer in Denver and Chicago died at his home from consumption. Born in Bloomington he worked on the Remington Pantograph later on The Record and The Record Herald children pages. He came to Denver for his wife and leaves two children. remains to be shipped to Bloomington for interment.
Detectives plead with a father as two companions aged 16 and a third 18 stand accused. Samuel Horwice a YMCA member, with Joseph Wallace 16 and Max Sengerman 15, are charged with pilfering from organization members. Sheldon Legourne is also under arrest for alleged cooperation.
The fishing schooner Giloriana, Captain George Stoddard of Gloucester, ran ashore in heavy fog near Whale Cove White Point Ledges. Fifteen of the eighteen crew perished including Captain Stoddard in the disaster.
An article argues that although social punishments fade, nature still afflicts the stomach for poor eating. It touts Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery as curing stomach disease and related irritability and sleeplessness, citing a patient from Leavenworth County who improved after taking it.
A federal court granted a temporary restraining order against Team Drivers International Union officers and members in Omaha on May 7. The order bars interference with interstate commerce and requires a May 20 hearing to extend or lift the injunction. Complainants include seven delivery firms, coal dealers, a lumber company, a robber, and a department store.
Judge Munger issues a sweeping restraining order against the Team Drivers' International Union Local No. 1 proposing to halt picketing blocking work and threatening action. The order forbids union efforts to hinder interstate commerce and directs officers and members to stop organizing to restrain movement of freight in transit between Omaha and outside Nebraska. Florence Wisconsin May 7 Jim Dunkel and Otto Montke were found dead at the bottom of a shaft at the Hlor mine. Authorities investigated the accident and the scene was secured.
