Residents in northwest Boone report several dogs poisoned by a poisoner using strychnine. The case prompts concern over animal safety and urges residents to report any suspicious activity to authorities.
Jonn Young aged 60 a farmer near Carson hanged himself in his barn according to the coroner H L Tyler of Pottawattamie county. The death follows a brain tumor diagnosis and is reported as a suicide.
A fire ten miles southwest of Britt destroyed the farmhouse on a farm tenanted by George Kelch and owned by Carthage College. In the blaze twelve horses and three calves perished, with five buildings burned including the house.
Darlene Santaris, 7, was taken to Park Hospital with serious injuries after a car driven by her uncle Oliver Qison left the road near the West city limits. Others riding in the coupe sustained minor injuries.
Ottumwa residents William Metz aged 21 and Ralph Hunt aged 11 were jailed on charges of breaking and entering over the theft of radiators from the Brownlee auto market and wires from the Illinois Southern Utilities yards. They were captured in Burlington while allegedly attempting to sell the loot.
A car driven by Mrs Louis Stokes of Waterloo Iowa rolled over several times and landed in a ditch injuring six people. Her husband suffered a possible back fracture.
The city P T A council will sponsor an entertainment in the high school auditorium at 4 15 Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Sarah Fink of Des Moines will perform one or two plays using magic masks portraying all roles. Admission is ten cents for children fifteen cents for adults, proceeds to the summer playground fund.
Sixteen girls performed What Your Grandmother Did at the Baptist church last evening. half wore grandmother roles and half depicted emigrant nationalities. Negro spirituals pleased the audience and Margaret Hennon sang The Old Fashioned Meeting. Cast included LaVonne Stockman Darlene Young Dorothy Pratt Clara Gamble Dorothy Votruba Maxine Mangold and others. A special offering supported the Baptist girls camp at Iowa Falls.
The U S Supreme Court denied review of Walter Rhodes Iowa City, sentenced to hang for killing his wife with dynamite in 1937. Gov Wilson faced a late plea from Ida Chamness West Branch, who urged mercy after visiting Rhodes in prison.
Charles D. Green 62 died at 6:15 AM at his daughter’s home in Wellman. Funeral set for Tuesday at 2:30 PM in Wellman Baptist Church with Rev. Hillis and Rev. Conant. Burial in Wellman cemetery. Survived by wife Cora and three children Omer, Orlo, and Mrs. Disney, plus two grandchildren and a Keota-born sister. He held local posts with Kinross church, Odd Fellows, Rebekah, Knights of Pythias, Pythian Sisters, and Lime Creek township trustee.
Mrs. Cora Brindley Cubbins wife of Dr W R Cubbins of Chicago died Saturday night at her home after a brief illness She was past 60 and had been ill about a year Funeral services are set for 3 PM Tuesday at her Chicago home with burial there

Buying power also climbs from 70 to 72, with an outlook for higher demand but ongoing industrial export shifts and pork supply effects. Hog marketing may rise in the next two months.

Reared in Washington she was daughter of Lon Brindley and Sarah Brindley. She attended Washington schools and trained in Chicago where she married Dr Cu bins. Home was Chicago though frequent Washington visits. Survived by husband, son Robert of South Bend Indiana, another son Lawrence died young, sister Alma Brindley and aunt Maude Hott of Dundee Illinois near Chicago.
Fred Maasdam, longtime Washington schools staffer and track coach, has accepted the superintendent job for the Packwood consolidated schools in Jefferson county. He will start with the new school year and will also teach manual training and coach the basketball team, adding executive duties to his teaching career. Maasdam’s ties to Fairfield and Parsons College are noted, with a history as principal, high school coach, and junior college basketball mentor.
Des Moines May 6 U P Fred Porter state comptroller estimated the 1940 fiscal year will show $661 286 less admin costs than 1939 40 and a further $52119 saving from placing the State highway commission under legislative budget control The total 1939 40 saving plus the first two quarters of the current year amounts to $1 413 556 Porter presented figures in a report to Governor George A Wilson Expenditures for administrative departments in the first quarter fell $144 697 from a year earlier while the second quarter dropped $186 020 compared with the same period of the prior year.

John A. Babcock a noted Chicago livestock commission man died Sunday morning at 45 in an Aurora hospital after years of illness. Funeral services are set in Chicago Tuesday evening at Ketchams funeral home with Knights Templar involvement, followed by a Washington service Wednesday. Interment will be at Moline Grove cemetery. Born in Washington Iowa in August 1880 he rose in the Chicago livestock trade.
Washington hosts Music Week with University of Iowa chamber symphony under Phillip Greeley Clapp in the high school auditorium at o clock. Admission is free. Other programs include Boy's Glee Club, instrumental recitals, and choral concerts at local churches and the Presbyterian church.
Harold Klett of Harper Charles Dawson and Melvin Hubbs of Washington were bruised and cut when the car driven by Klett left primary road No. 92 near the Washington Louisa county line. The crash happened about 2 30 Sunday morning as slick dirt shoulder caused loss of control and the vehicle into a ditch. The trio was en route from Davenport toward Washington.
A total of 1706 Washington county farmers signed farm plans by May 1 indicating intent to participate in the 1940 AAA program. The sign‑up equals 76 percent of county farmers and about 82 percent of cropland. Plans detail acreage allotments soil building practices and potential maximum payments. Shortly before noon today the Prymek case was impaneled to hear Clara M. and Henry F. Prymek versus Washington county over a vacted road in blight and township. Jurors include Vista Mauthe Willa Weldin Helem Griffith Ina Rowe and others with new additions from the 20 jurors list. Damages sought are 2650 dollars with county action contested by attorney Robert Larson of Iowa City and County Attorney Richard A. Stewart.
