The Los Angeles grand jury reopens the 1922 murder of director William Desmond Taylor. Witness Margaret Fillmore testifies as subpoenas issue for Mary Miles Minter, her mother Charlotte Shelby, and sister Mary Minter. Diaries from Minter and an associate are sought as investigators press the case.
Jane Niles of Alamosa is the first co ed candidate in years to seek the Daily Iowan editorship at the University of Iowa. She is one of seven candidates trying out for the position.
Mrs. S A Richardson of Grimes, 70, was denied $10,000 damages by a district court jury after a September bridge collision with a car driven by Winterset stockman Glenn Newton.
Lyle Wynkoop, an auto salesman, faced arrest after two prospects riding with him were halted by police who demanded a driver’s license not on his person. He had none, was jailed, and bond was set at 25 dollars.
ClarionMiss Iila Judd and Miss June Martin an employee of Mrs Butler's beauty shop were found unconscious in the Butler home. They had retired the night before and had forgotten to turn off a gas heater in the basement. The dog, which had been put in the basement for the night, was found dead.
West of the Mississippi festival opens tonight at Mount Vernon Cornell. John Charles Thomas, Metropolitan Opera teaching baritone, appears as soloist. A Saturday afternoon Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert commemorates the 100th CSO performance under Pr. Frederick Stock at the Cornell festival.
The University of Iowa announced a summer lecture series featuring six nationally known men in educational, legal, social science and criminology fields. Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver will open the series, with speakers including Robert M. Hutchins, Florence E. Allen, Everett Dean Martin, Clarence A. Dykstra, and August Vollmer.
Conflict over talents pits Harry Carlson a Sousaphone player against civil and military authorities at the Iowa state high school contest in Town City. Carlson and the Shenandoah brass sextette cancel a state appearance to face federal inspection with Company FE of the National Guard.
Bethlehem commandery Knights Templar will observe Ascension Day with a 6:30 dinner at the Masonic temple and ceremonial work in the order of the temple. The event marks Christ’s ascension 40 days after Easter and may include members from Fairfield and other nearby cities.
Diphtheria immunization and smallpox vaccination sponsored by the Washington County health unit will be carried out in Jackson Township at the Salem school house. Morning brings a summer round-up of physical examinations for preschool children, and in the afternoon Dr. W. S. Kyle will administer smallpox vaccination and diphtheria immunization to people of all ages.
The Washington high school boys quartet earned a good rating at the state music festival this morning. No superior ratings were given. Ottumwa and West Waterloo received excellent ratings. Also rated good were Charles City, Eagle Grove, and Shenandoah in combined Class AA and A. The mixed quintet and girls' sextet performed, with results pending.
Henderson Wallace of Ste.purney traveled to Washington today to call on friends and maintain social ties.
Senator Borah of Idaho denounces fascist regimes in Italy and Spain for slaughter of civilians. He condemns Italian killings in Ethiopia after an attempted assault on Marshal Graziani and denounces Spanish insurgents for the Basque city Guernica raid.
Mrs. Harvey Parks, 24, died from burns after a can of tractor oil exploded while she tried to start a kitchen fire at her farm home near Ottumwa. The incident occurred May 6.
John Naughton, service manager at Tucker and Eleher garage for four years, accepts a similar post at a Chevrolet garage in Geneseo. He will depart Monday to start his duties. Mrs. Naughton and the children will stay in Washington until school ends.
Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes denounced Roosevelt’s proposed court revision at an American Law Institute gathering in Washington. He urged a competent and independent judiciary anchored by the free polity, not by statutes or forms.
In New Castle Kentucky on May 6, after more than 19 hours of deliberation the jury trying Brig Gen H H Denhardt for the slaying of Verna Garr Taylor was discharged by Judge Charles C Marshall. Foreman Richard Adcock said the panel believed a verdict was impossible with more time. The case will be reassigned for a new trial likely at the September term of court.
Washington Iowa postoffice receipts for 1936 totaled 36900 dollars. Had receipts fallen below 33000 dollars the postmaster’s salary would have been cut. He currently receives 3000 dollars and will keep that salary through the coming fiscales year. If all money were credited, he would not have earned a raise, but city delivery offices use ninety percent of cross receipts to set salaries, here 33210 dollars.
More than seven thousand pupils and chaperons attend the Iowa City music festival at the University of Iowa. Officials report 7,477 contestants and visitors, lodging for 3,542, and a larger turnout than prior years with girls outnumbering boys by about 600.
In Keokuk on May 6, Melvin Bennett 18 of Wayland Missouri and Joe Cooper 17 of Hamilton Illinois were jailed after a pursuit ending with Bennett wrecking a car and leaping into the river. Bennett was unable to swim and was caught when he surfaced. Cooper, a passenger, also detained.
Foreman Earl Wade and T. H. Nickland were seriously injured and Bryan Mitchell slightly hurt when three steel girders toppled during construction of a service station in Des Moines.
E B Shoop and Tony Im Pastato both from Chicago were business visitors in Washington today.
Des Moines reports that renewal application blanks will be available starting May 17 through the state. Dr. Robert O Brian, secretary of state, says blanks will be placed in sheriff and county treasurer offices, banks, and some filling stations to ease access. Applications post May 17 may be submitted to avoid delay, with a 50 cent fee payable by check or money order. Multiple applicants may use one check. cash not accepted.
At a Washington board meeting Miss Lab Deema Wood of Traer was chosen art instructor for next year. She teaches in Arlington Iowa this year and will devote full time to art. Wood, a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College, plans to study at the Chicago Art Institute this summer.
Drivers license examiners must administer tests on regular county trips before renewal. A legislature set the renewal fee at 50 cents, up from 25 cents previously.
The Iowa State Conservation Commission highlights changes in the new fishing laws enacted by the legislature. They tighten trot line usage to non crossing across water, require one end anchored from shore visible, and demand constant tackle supervision. Limits allow at most two lines with one hook each, with double hooks counted as one. Prohibited methods include gar hooks snag hooks nets seines traps firearms dynamite explosives poisonous or stupefying substances lime ashes or electricity in taking fish.
Des Moines May 6 Representatives of the Iowa liquor control commission will sound out sentiment in several dry cities including Corning Mt Pleasant Washington and Ames Chairman B B Manley said the move aims to determine if the commission has correctly considered the towns cry If sentiment favors liquor stores may be opened even if dry protests exist and bootlegging is alleged in these cities
Gov Kraschel signed 141 bills including a claim of 1800 to C H White of Mt Pleasant for the accidental death of Lee Eldon White attributed to dynamiting on a road project. The governor also signed a new income tax bill.
The Washington Concert band directed by Neil Humble performed last evening in Central Park as the third Fortnightly club music week event. The varied program included popular numbers a saxophone solo and a trombone novelty and drew a good crowd despite a chilly evening. Norm a Payne was ill and could not perform. the Municipal Band closes music week Saturday with Mila Sorden directing in Central Park.
The state conservation commission announced fishing will be allowed in only two artificial lakes in 1937: Lake Wapello in Davis County and Upper Keomah Lake in Mahaska County.
