The Washington Y M C A annual meeting elected six new directors to three year terms and one two year term to fill an unfinished term. The session honored the late Winfield Smouse and noted growth with 572 members.
Street Commissioner Blaine Holmes completed installation of fifty new stop signs at Washington street intersections to enforce through streets and traffic regulations aimed at accident prevention. Changes include Madison through traffic on East Madison and Marion stop at South Marion, Fifth and North Iowa, East Third Street through and Fifth stop, and Madison yielding at the high school corner. City officials urge drivers to observe signs. marshals will enforce.
Iowa City. Dean George F Kay, head of the college of liberal arts at the University of Iowa for 20 years, underwent an operation for a badly infected hand. Attendants said Dean Kay was doing nicely.
Corning farm laborer Bert Winters, age 29, received a 15 year sentence in the Fort Madison penitentiary after a rape charge filed by the parents of a 12 year old girl who bore a daughter last Friday.
Gerald Watson of Boone advised against taking off footwear while driving after his car left the pavement and overturned in a ditch. He escaped injury though the vehicle was badly damaged.
Mrs Katherine Rush 41 hitches to Des Moines and sleeps on the statehouse steps protesting her discharge from a WPA sewing project in Leon. She declares she will stay until her job is restored after being dropped on March 4.
Iowa City Madge Jones, a Cedar Rapids junior, was named editor of Frivol, the University of Iowa humor magazine, by the student board of publications. Phil Goodenough of Des Moines was selected business manager, with Misa Jones as Pi Beta Phi president and Goodenough a Delta Tau Delta member.
Webster City, Lee Croxell, 27, truck driver, was found slumped at the wheel on Illinois Central tracks as a fast freight approached. He faced charges of driving a truck while intoxicated and thanked Officers M. J. House and Marion Weedman for likely saving his life.
Karl King, director of the Fort Dodge Municipal band, will conduct a Miss band concert at the May Festival in Harlan on May 12. The event, sponsored by the Harlan Community club, will feature ten bands already planning to attend.
A five state parley of democratic women will be held in Des Moines on May 24 with delegates from Minnesota Iowa North Dakota South Dakota and Nebraska to attend. Key speaker will be Miss Josephine Roche assistant secretary of the treasury. Expected participants include Miss Mary W Downer Mrs Thomas F McAllister and Mrs May Thompson Evans.
Co. Vo Lunnon of Ottumwa traveled to Washington on business today to conduct meetings and advance company interests.
DES MOINES May 5 With approval of local budgets by August 15 the Iowa Taxpayers association urged taxpayers to attend budget hearings and demand economy. The group promotes a county cost rating to compare per capita expenditures and pressures for lower local budgets. Joe L. Long says strong participation and a 4 percent petition can trigger state board appeals under Senate File 89. Washington county shows mixed costs across departments in the latest rankings.
Iowa’s motor vehicle department invites sheriffs to assist in issuing 1,000,000 new auto driver licenses. Sheriff support is voluntary and fees remain with the state. applicants with missing license stubs or new licenses require driving tests in certain cases. Applications will be available mid month across cities.
Under Hi Y leadership the four clubs number 78 members with 36 more boys learning to swim at the Y pool this year. Pool attendance reached 16 740 and gym use 6 223. Community room hosts 281 groups with total attendance 11 851. Memory Lane drive in Riverview will plant 64 trees as a World War memorial sponsored by the American Legion auxiliary.
Reported civil war within Spain with bloody street fighting between anarchists and Catalan government forces in Barcelona amid incoming reinforcements. Rebels claim gains near Guernica as Britain sends a cruiser and destroyer to Barcelona. Perpignan sources note about 100 killed and many wounded in Barcelona hospitals.
T. H. Barnes of Crawford township submitted his resignation as a member of the county hospital board of trustees to take effect immediately. The resignation was sent to the board of supervisors and filed with the county auditor. An appointment to fill the unexpired term will be made by the supervisors. Barnes was appointed June 5, 1936, to serve in place of Rev. W. G. Robertson and was elected to the position at the general election last fall to serve until 1940.
Washington high school musicians travel to Iowa City for the state music festival spanning Thursday to Saturday. Helen Coffey directs a boys quartet, mixed quintet, girls sextet, girls glee club and mixed chorus with entries including Lois Humble Maxine Allen Ruth Dupuis Ioja Dittmer and more. Individual solos feature Maxine Allen on flute and several ensembles perform in Methodist church and MacBride hall across the event.
The Fortnightly club sponsored National Music Week program fills the high school auditorium with junior high and elementary pupils performing choruses, solos, and instrumental numbers under instructors Misses Bernice Nash Ruth Stewart and Maurice Breyton. Several groups earned superior ratings and qualify for the state festival.
Postmaster M C DeLong notes the social security board will accept voluntary account numbers from workers over 65. Postmasters must take properly completed forms from all employees. Registration is voluntary for those past age 65, with numbers used for unemployment provisions rather than old age benefits.
Road work on the dirt paths across Washington county is delayed by wet weather and late Maintainer deliveries. The county board of supervisors notes nine new machines will replace drag crews, distributing one unit per five townships. Despite soggy conditions, officials expect improved road quality through summer.
Hollywood leadersconsider a peace plan from the Los Angeles Central Labor Council as the strike by 6,000 union members at ten major motion picture studios nears potential settlement. After last night violence injuring seven, optimism grows for talks to resume with concessions from both sides and a possible agreement within two days.
Postmasters of the first Iowa district plan a May 11 gathering in Washington at 7 30 pm. L B Hill of Des Moines and Vane Herbert of Storm Lake will speak as about 100 district postmasters from eleven southeastern Iowa counties attend at the Y M C A community room.
In Monts France May 5 the Duke of Windsor and Mrs Wallis Simpson announce plans to wed as soon as possible after King George VI's coronation. No date is set and no plans will be announced until the coronation week passes. The former king intends to play golf this afternoon.
Dr. E. L. Walsh reports 79 pupils immunized for diphtheria at Ain Worth yesterday. The county health unit notes the majority of students are now safeguarded. Some preschool children received treatment. A smallpox vaccination is planned at Ainaworta school during the last week of the school year. Mr and Mrs A H Brining and son Gayle of K were in town yesterday afternoon.
