Sproule to study at Humboldt State College this summer
John Sproule, biology instructor at Washington High School, has been accepted for a Summer Institute for high school science teachers at Humboldt State College in Arcata California. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the program runs June 15 to August 7 and covers tuition. He will study plant taxonomy and entomology.

Ladies in Blue reach vast volunteer hours at Iowa City VA

New jail erected in Central Park during Washington 125th events
A wire corn crib jail was set up in Central Park as part of a temporary enforcement by the Brothers of the Brush. Officials say it will imprison men who violate rules set by a kangaroo court active until mid June during Washington’s 125th anniversary celebrations. Most offenders are expected to be men who fail to grow beards or display a smoothie badge.

Tornado Injures Woman and Damages Farmlands in Iowa Area
A hopscotching tornado struck six counties in northeast Iowa and southern Wisconsin Monday night causing extensive farm damage. Emma Arnold, 66, of Monticello, suffered serious burns when a stove overturned during the storm. The twister ripped buildings near Central City, Harpers Ferry, Cascade, Dyersville, Waubek, and Marion, with power outages reported in Hopkinton. The cyclone passed near Monticello area farms before moving northeast toward Wisconsin. Deputies assisted traffic around downed power lines as families endured the events and crews assessed the damage.
