The Red Cross sewing room committee requests loaned sewing machines to equip the room opening next Thursday May 15 at city hall. They also need a desk chair and a typewriter and will arrange transport. Call Mrs. Reid or Mrs. Morrison to contribute.
A motion for a new trial was filed in the district court seeking to set aside the verdict and judgment in Charles Colburn versus Lester B. Krabill. Damages of 2500 were sought for injuries from an automobile accident. the jury awarded 2000 on February 6 after a January term trial. The collision involved no direct car damage but the plaintiff’s vehicle was wrecked as the driver tried to avoid the defendant’s car.
Mr and Mrs A Nicholson presented a chalk program last evening in What Cheer. Dr T J Pease traveled to Des Moines yesterday for a three day convention of the State Dental Society. Dr W J Masson plans to attend meetings there tomorrow.
The Washington Municipal band directed by Milo Sorden is invited to perform at the Iowa Bandmasters Association convention in Cedar Rapids. The convention runs June 1, 2 and 8 with a 7:30 p.m. concert on June 1 at the Memorial building. The East High Waterloo and Coe College bands join in the three concerts on June 3. The Iowa Bandmasters Association, formed about ten years ago, is the world’s largest.
Funeral services for Elmer Bush a Kalona man who died after a brief illness at Iowa City were announced with details of the service and burial plans.
Wellman area report states Mrs. Everette Young’s eight room two story house burned yesterday afternoon eight miles southeast of Wellman. Only living room furniture saved. Fire cause unknown after she lit a bottle stove in the kitchen and left to gather eyes. Washington Farmers Mutual fire truck arrived too late. building lost, insured.
Last week services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the L A Jones funeral home with Mrs C E K Hillis of Kalona in charge. Pall bearers included Joe Kolesick Joe Pieper Everette Teets Guy Stumpf Frank Proby and Frank Conkjin. Burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery.
In Washington on May 6 the House Ways and Means Committee heatedly debated President Roosevelt's recent tax letter. Republicans criticized the document for offering little guidance on spending cuts and economy, urging the pending 3.6 billion dollar revenue bill follow lines that avoid enriching the rich or impoverishing the poor.
The Par ent-Teacher association city council raised $55 from a rummage sale held Friday afternoon and all day Saturday at city hall. Proceeds support the summer playground program with $50 still needed. A candy sale is planned for tomorrow evening with a musical program at 7 30 in the high school auditorium.
London reported the Luftwaffe bombed Belfast heavily as RAF bombers struck Baghdad and other targets in the near east. British forces fought Iraqi troops with limited details available amid conflicting reports from Cairo and London.
New York newspaper notes the death of Dr. Harry Rogers Stark former pastor of Washington Presbyterian Church. Once led a Brooklyn church, resigned April 3 due to ill health. He was 76 years old.
The University of Iowa Chamber Symphony, a forty piece ensemble conducted by Prof. Philip Greeley Clapp, performs this evening at 8 o clock in the high school auditorium. The Fortnightly club Music Department sponsors National Music Week and admission is free with a free will offering to cover costs. Joyce Butterworth, daughter of Supt. BE Butterworth, plays French horn.
A postcard attached to one of 1500 balloons released in Washington on Sept 14 last year was found in Blandinaville Illinois on May 1 by Roy Van Arsdale. He mailed it to Washington and it arrived last Saturday. The ecard shows weather wear from outdoor exposure with an unreadable sender but lists the address as Ainsworth. Balloons later drifted back from as far as Indiana with many letters mated back.
Letters mailed from the high school invite 500 to 600 Washington county young adults who turned 21 in the past year to two May meetings on democracy and citizenship. May 9 offers a discussion at eight o'clock with a political science professor. May 16 features Jordon Larson of Dubuque speaking at a citizenship recognition event where certificates are issued.
The notice invites new voters to a May 9 1941 meeting at the High School Auditorium in Washington Iowa to celebrate citizenship and learn about democracy. It asks attendees to also attend May 16 at the same place and time with a citizenship certificate awarded for both meetings.
More than 100 reservations have been received for the annual YMCA dinner in the community room Tuesday evening followed by the association’s annual meeting and election of five directors for a three year term. Reservations may still be made this evening by calling No 23.
