Engineers struggle to abate rising flood waters escaping Table Rock Cove dam. About 15 000 to 20 000 valley residents evacuated or prepared for higher ground as water pours through fissures at 6000 gallons a second. Success in stabilizing the dam is seen as key to protecting downstream structures.
Walter McKinnie Conner 74, dies at his West Madison home after ten months of illness. Born March 7 1854 in Washington, he worked in local grocerages before starting his own business on North Marion avenue. Survived by widow Cynthe Jane Gibson, daughters Ella Sessler and Grace Conner, son Walter C. Conner, siblings and several grandchildren. Funeral set for Monday at L. A. Jones funeral home.
Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover declares opposition to price fixing and government buying of farm goods. He favors a federal farm board to help agriculture achieve success similar to other industries, addressing concerns raised by opponent James E. Watson in Indiana.
Richard McCleery, Washington high school speech teacher, announces the cast for The Cat and the Canary to be staged as the annual senior class play. Dates May 17 and 18 loom near as the cast remains tentative with a few parts still unfilled.
Will H. Dilg League sends 200 invitations to Washington county residents interested in conservation. A county-wide chapter meeting at city hall Thursday evening May 10 aims to form a county charter, adopt a constitution and by laws, and elect a director from each town. Speakers will include two informed on conservation topics.
The obituary notes a burial at Elm Grove Cemetery with the casket to be open at Jones Funeral Home on Sunday and Monday until the hour of the service. The arrangement underscores a vigil before the funeral rites.
The United States lost a three year battle to collect about 106 million dollars in back taxes from Senator Couzens of Michigan. The case centered on Ford stock valued at various amounts, with the IRS arguing higher profits and jeopardy assessments. Last night about 9 20 an engine backing in the Rock Island yards struck a car crossing North Fourth avenue. E A Hofer of Cedar Rapids, son in law of Will Starr, was uninjured though his car was demolished.
In Kansas City on May 5, the Methodist Episcopal conference opened a road to curb cigarette use. A resolution by Dr. David H. Hargis targets cigarette manufacture sale and general tobacco use especially among women and was sent to the temperance committee for revision and later reintroduction.
Word came of the death of Mrs. H. I. Adams at her Omaha home on Wednesday night. Burial took place in Omaha this afternoon. She was the daughter of Dan Mickey a pioneer of Washington county and formerly lived in Ainsworth where her husband ran a hardware store before leaving the county over forty years ago. She is survived by her husband and a son Marion of Omaha.
A six man jury under Sheriff Charles M Denison fixed compensation for a Harrow strip of land taken by the State highway commission for a primary road at Ainsworth. The Rock Island railway received 125 dollars and Standard Oil 225 dollars. The land is part of the project to remove awkward turns near two railway crossings on road No 2 south of the tracks. Jurors named were John Gardenier Des Moines Robert J Shaw Sigourney J K Baldridge Bloomfield Elmer C Davis Fairfield R A Hasselquist Chariton Oral S Swift Marengo.
The fifth annual Dutch Creek fair is scheduled for August 30, announced by Rev. W. Klein of Valley Church. The event has consistently been held near September 1, with no date change planned for 1928. A community meeting on May 14 will form committees and plan details.
John Gibson of Valley Junction will be buried Sunday afternoon at Elm Grove cemetery in a service led by the Washington lodge of Masons. His body was moved from Des Moines by special train arriving about 12:30. He died Thursday after a long illness and about sixty friends are expected to attend.
Senator Brookhart of Iowa introduces a resolution directing the Federal Trade Commission to investigate chain stores in the United States. He notes more than 100000 chain stores handling about 16 percent of all retail trade and warns that further growth could bring monopoly. The inquiry would assess restraint of trade and regulatory needs under existing or new laws.
More than four hundred people filled the junior high auditorium for the annual exhibit and a half hour concert directed by Nilburn McKay. The event showcased sewing, manual training, metal work, and art under Miss Elsie Moxer, Prof. George Leebl, and Miss Alice Van Vliet, highlighting skilled craftsmanship and progress by the school’s pupils.
The Rotary club sponsored event draws nine sign ups at Washington Junior College. Charles Schneider of four miles northwest of Haskins died at 7 a.m. at Washington county hospital after a lingering heart ailment. He will be moved to Rock Island for funeral services and burial Monday. casket viewing at L. A. Jones funeral home Sunday. Born September 2, 1860 in Switzerland, he came to America at age ten with parents John and Julia Schneider. Survived by brother Adolph of Davenport and sisters Carrie Hartman and Anna Hintermeister of Taylor Ridge, with fifteen nephews and nieces. An inventive man, he worked on various home workshop experiments.
The High School plans a May 29 performance of Pinafore directed by H N Schuster with Everette Griffith as Ralph Rackstraw and a cast including Gladys Williams Winifred Allen and Roy Finch. The Shields Orchestra will provide regular accompaniment as the cast memorizes lines and songs for this sea going Gilbert and Sullivan comedy.

Mrs KB R Harvey reports the death of her sister Mrs Rhoda Gasgow Condit at her Alhambra California home. Survived by husband W D Condit three daughters Lola Sargent Anna Bailey and Roscoe Shrader a son Frederick S Condit and three sisters Mary McEwain Ella Rownd and E R Harvey. Condit was long a familiar figure in the community.
