The senior prom returns as the first event before spring Commencement at Washington High School. It runs Saturday evening May 6 from 9 p.m. to midnight in the school gymnasium with Continental Brass providing music. The grand march is at 10:30 p.m. and parents may watch from the gym balconies.
The YMCA schedules its annual dinner on Tuesday May 9 at 6 30 PM in the Y community room with reservations at 2 50. Five board seats will be elected and annual reports presented. Music by the Hi Fi s and Sunrise Singers. Non diners may attend the 7 30 PM business meeting and program.
Linn County Attorney William Faches urged Cedar Rapids officers to stop arresting people for vagrancy calling it a victimless crime. His stance followed a U.S. circuit panel decision upholding Elliot Ricehill’s murder conviction, which questioned Iowa’s vagrancy law. He cited a February Supreme Court ruling that struck down vague vagrancy statutes.
Torrential rain in the Ajusco Mountains south of Mexico City triggered flash floods killing at least 18. Water and mud swept cars, trees, and homes from slopes while a major intersection on a suburban freeway saw cars carried away with occupants inside.
Bruce Cabot, known for King Kong and a long career as a character actor, died of lung cancer in Hollywood. Born Jacques de Bujac in 1903 at Carlsbad New Mexico, he was the grandson of a French ambassador to the United States and later worked as a cowboy oilfield worker and boxer before acting.
In Kellogg Idaho rescue teams abandon an approach to No 9 shaft as 58 miners remain trapped by a fire at Sunshine Silver Mine. Gov Andrus calls it the worst Idaho disaster as smoke chokes 3,700-foot tunnels and 108 survivors wait above ground.
President Nixon led national tributes calling Hoover a giant in American history after his death at 77. Hoover’s body lay in state 222 hours under the Capitol Dome as about 17,800 people passed his bier. Funeral rites were held at National Presbyterian Church before burial at Congressional Cemetery. Nixon praised Hoover’s life and appointed L Patrick Gray III as interim FBI director.
The Davenport based firm led by Chuck Stauduhar disclosed a four year, 11 million dollar project on the H E Busby farm of 135 acres along highway one. Plans include single and multi family housing, small commercial space, cemetery and school expansion and park facilities. Public meetings will gather input as surveying begins next week with initial construction in fall.
Rep. Fred Schwengel of Iowa announces co sponsorship of legislation to provide extra incentives for enlistment in an all volunteer Army, criticizing the draft system as unfair and inequitable. He argues for moving toward a volunteer force.
Ohio Democrats head to court over the primary as Hubert Humphrey leads George McGovern 41 to 39 percent with 87 percent counted for 38 at large delegates. McGovern leads in 59 of 115 district delegates while legal challenges target Cuyahoga County results. Extended voting orders and machine delays affected turnout across metropolitan Cleveland and other counties.
President Thieu travels to Hue amid threats from Communist forces 18 miles northwest and the fall of Quang Tri. He meets with military leaders to assess the north's situation as refugees are urged to return and Hue stabilizes after near-anarchy.
United Press International reports Iowa will see clear to partly cloudy skies and cool temperatures tonight with lows in the upper 30s to mid 40s. Friday will bring increasing cloudiness and a warmer trend with highs from the upper 60s to mid 70s and a chance of showers.
