MacKinlay Kantor, the Sarasota based novelist formerly of Webster City, has arrived and plans to spend most of the summer in Webster City. The local column notes his return and anticipated time in the city.
Marshall Town radio dealers report a man calling himself Max Ferguson rented an apartment last week, had three radios sent for demonstration, then vanished with the radios. Police are urged to locate him.
Three separate fatal crashes occurred on Highway 30 in Iowa on Tuesday, miles apart along the old Lincoln Highway. The incidents raise the year’s highway toll to 126, compared with 142 at the same point last year.
June Zavitz six was seized by a coughing spell while swinging at recess. She died at home in Coon Rapids from heart disease. She was daughter of Louis Zavitz, now in the United States navy, and lived with uncle and aunt Ed and Mrs Zavitz.
Mrs Mary Schippers, 63, of Otley, farm wife, was scalped when hair caught in a washing machine wringer. She ran to her son for help, collapsed, and was taken to a hospital in OsKaloosa where surgeons grafted the scalp. Attendants reported her condition as fair.
Professor Barty Blackstone of the University of Iowa College of Commerce resigns after a long tenure since 1925 to become an associate professor of commerce and education at the University of Southern California. He will teach at Ohio State University in the education college this summer.
Doctors said a baby found in a 25-foot well on George Guilliams’s farm probably was alive when thrown into the water. Marie Guilliams, 16, the farmer’s daughter, was seriously ill after reporting she had given birth. she left her bed, went outdoors, and returned two hours later to tell the family about the birth. The child’s father is reportedly known to officers.
An eight year old farm boy, Robert Lee McMasters Jr., was struck by lightning while closing a barn door during a storm in Lime Springs. The barn burned. the father, cow, and burning structure were not fully damaged before removal of the boy's body.
In CLARINDA, Mrs. Joe Loughry, 47, was struck by a car as she stood at her husband's filling station entrance four miles north of Villisca. One of her legs was torn off, the other injuries left her in critical condition after she was knocked against a guardrail on Highway 71.
Miss Neva Mailers arrives from Alburnett Iowa for her first day at Blanche's Beauty Nook in Washington. She brings experience from musical circles with a specialty in the French horn and aligns with the Methodist church. She rooms at the O FE Schmitt residence on East Washington Street.
Washington high school marching band, under Major L. T. Saul’s weekly military drill, heads to the state music festival in Iowa City this weekend. The group, with drum major Marion Timmons, will compete in marching and playing events including a drum solo by David Pearson, while brass and girls sextets also perform.
Mrs Sorden soprano John Yousling pianist Daryl Fetters baritone horn Carolyn Strong flutist presented a balanced program in Washington Methodiste church to a large crowd. Encores followed as all performers showcased talents. Sorden’s voice impressed with Puccini and Verdi selections and includes I Carry You in My Pocket Lagvinoetta.
Leon Beatty post of the American Legion held a meeting focusing on youth work. William Brown and Roy Dale Voorhees were chosen to represent the post at the boys state camp at Camp Dodge next month, with expenses covered by the post. A committee was formed to study organizing a junior baseball team.
Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini held a private hour and a half discussion in Rome about Europe’s future. They are said to be shaping a potential military alliance against Russia. Hitler urged a strong anti communist stance while Mussolini favored slower military alignment.
Mrs. Joe Lauehry of Willisea died from injuries after being struck by a car driven by Thomas S. Dennis of Kansas City. One leg was severed in the crash. Iowa records show this as the 127th highway fatality of the year.
Rev. Mr. Worthley of the Unitarian church in Iowa City spoke on The World As It Now Is, Is Passing Away, at a county Democratic gathering in the Bieber office. Professors Van Der Zee and Livingston offered brief talks, with Miss Anna Nichols and John Killian in attendance. A pot luck supper followed, and another similar meeting is planned for May 24.
At a Legion meeting on Memorial day a plan emerged to film Legion observances. Dr E D Miller county commander discussed county town coverage with a small motion picture crew. Richard McCleery will photograph Washington, and the next county gathering is set for Wellman on May 12.
W B Johnson of Davenport addresses the Washington Y M C A annual meeting praising its community role and urging action against forces he says threaten religion and civilization. Morrison presided with group singing, a trombone solo, and a large community dinner.
The Washington Y M C A celebrates thirteen years since the Feb 1 1925 dedication of its building. funded by an $85 000 bequest from J H Young with local subscriptions lifting the fund to $105 000, the institution has become a central community feature.
Five board members whose terms expired were re-elected at the Washimpton Y M C A annual meeting after a community dinner in the room attended by about 100. John Winga remains president and Leigh Soule continues as secretary directing ongoing Y programs and community ties.
A group led by Eb C Bicher of Iowa urges a combined wage and farm bill in Congress. They argue southern representatives back a wage-farm measure, not the wage-hour bill alone, citing farm price support and price stabilization as key elements.
New York May 4 The French franc fell to its lowest level since October 18 1929 amid fears of a new devaluation and European currency instability. Traders cited concerns over French economic policy and renewed prospects of a devalued franc.
Light rainfall moved through this afternoon delivering tenths of an inch in several spots. The shower was brief and left damp streets and a cooler breeze across the city.
Mary L. Hesseltine of Winston High School was named adjuct winner of the county air essay contest announced by Postmaster M. C. Long. The subject was We Across America. Mildred Horner and Edith Jolly Ainsworth followed in second and third. Virginia Stricker represented Wellman School and Vonne Karel Riverside’s student.
City funds go to kill stray dogs that roam the streets and are unclaimed. Officials suspect some are abandoned by out of town owners who no longer want them.
