Five million workers are idle in Britain as a general sympathy strike by coal miners paralyzes transit and industry. Rail and transport workers, seamen, printers, iron workers, electricians, and others halted activity, crippling London and major cities while newspapers halt and milk distribution continues.
London reports a general strike as of midnight with minimal movement. Hull and Manchester lose trains and docks while Wales and Glasgow see mass enlistment of workers. Shipping firms adapt with Majestic sailing to New York and Leviathan passengers redirected via Southampton and Cherbourg.
A. Claire Dewey of the Izaak Walton League Washington chapter asks the public to avoid fishing in the Rock Island reservoir until May 1 1927 to protect the scarce bass and allow other stocked species to thrive. She cites Iowa Game Law and notes the league plans further stocking while urging cooperation.
The Hi Y Club sponsored mothers and sons banquet in the Y M C A community room with over a hundred attendees. Mary Roberts and William Bragg performed, and officers for the coming year were announced. Washington high school glee clubs will compete at Iowa City Friday morning with preliminary rounds, and Carolyn McCleery will perform a piano solo in the Presbyterian church. The Rotary club will provide transportation to Iowa City for Washington glee clubs.
Licenses to marry were granted at the court house yesterday to Walter Warren Stewart of Haskins and Gladys Marie Genkinger of Washington and to Stanley J. Beggs of Ottumwa and Angeline K. Niller of Washington. Mrs Delbert Maxwell came from Crawfordsville to spend the day shopping.
Funeral services were conducted at Goodin parlors for Charles C. Rupp a former Washington resident who died at Fort Scott Kansas Burial followed at Elm Grove Cemetery due to valvular heart trouble He was 43 His father Charles H Rupp was ill with pneumonia in Fort Scott and not expected to recover
Plans are under way for the annual commencement exercises at the high school to be held Thursday evening June 3 at the Methodist church. Dr Naboth Osborne pastor of the Burling ton Congregational church and a renowned orator will deliver the address. The program also includes diploma awards for a class of 81 students and musical numbers. Class day exercises will occur Monday evening of commencement week with honor students delivering orations. A class play is set for May 27 and 28 at the high school.
An unfounded report claimed Col S W Brookhart was involved in a car crash near Iowa City. The rumor spread from Des Moines to Washington via papers, but Brookhart spoke in Chariton and remained unharmed, with no Iowa City incident.
Elizabeth Freding, longtime Journal assistant, quits with two sisters Helen and Victoria to seek a new life in San Diego California after the 15th of the month. They cite a needed climate change and aim to make their home on the West Coast for some time. The Journal staff extend best wishes for success and happiness.
Director Elwood Detrick announces tumblers will practice Wednesday evening at S:00 o clock and preps drill Thursday at four. No indoor baseball games were played yesterday. The next games will likely be outdoors. Tennis courts near the American Pearl Butter factory are now ready for use.
