State news notes three well-developed smallpox cases in LeClaire with outbreaks prompting health warnings. Officials urge vaccination and quarantine measures as the town monitors the spread and implements containment steps.
A report states three well-developed smallpox cases in LeClaire, midway between this city and Davenport. A strict quarantine has been established, and the town shows the usual excitement that accompanies an outbreak.
Clinton May 3. Murray Haywood the surviving partner has filed a petition in bankruptcy. He cites inability to meet the heavy expenses from the 1894 collapse that drew wide attention. Creditor list shows large deposits and total indebtedness of 72 873 11, including unsecured 14 730 73 and secured 51 342 88 and other liabilities 6 800.
The Fiftieth Iowa regiment band was mustered into state service at Armory Hall in Keokuk. After strict physicals led by Dr. Joan R. Maxwell, twenty eight men were found qualified to enlist. T. B. Boyer serves as band leader.
Oskaloosa reports the death of fifteen year old Sandy Blair from injuries sustained in Tuesday evening’s Muchakinock railroad accident. His lower limbs were badly mangled and death occurred about seven o'clock that night.
Oskaloosa reported May 4 that Hawkins Brothers sold their pacer Chamois and will ship him to West Superior Wisconsin. The horse was bought by A. M. Buxton for about one thousand dollars. Chamois earned a 2 16 time as a four year old in 1893 and later saw that mark adjusted to 2 124. He has competed with top harness horses and delivered notable performances.
Des Moines reports Judge D. Ryan of Newton has withdrawn from the Republican nomination for supreme judge. He will move to Des Moines, join the firm Phillips Ryan and Ryan, and take a new home at Tenth street and Mary avenue expected August 1.
Joliet Illinois May 4 Richard J Barr Republican candidate for city attorney filed a court contest against Edward G Purkhiser Democratic nominee claiming he won by ten votes though aldermen Gray and Feely allegedly altered tallies. Grand jury probes possible conspiracy indictment looms. Alva Oklahoma May 4 Methodist ticket wins city election narrowly with B D Mills garnering support beyond Methodists due to Sunday saloon closures.
Crops grow rapidly in Indiana with fruit trees budding though peaches lag. Wheat better in central and northern areas, but northern prospects are poor. Weather remains warm and favorable in the south. Robert Goeier of New York died in Navies Jail aged 58 years.
Plans for spending the $380,000 appropriation for St Joseph harbor progress with C W H Smith in charge. Contracts soon let for work to finish in 18 months to two years. Deep-water port and rail links bolster growth outlook for St Joseph and neighboring towns to 50,000. Big Four and four rail lines to be reinforced with two more, excluding Detroit.
Deputy Fish Commissioner Moore served notice to Barbee Lake Fishing club and all Indiana lake clubs with houses in Illinois and Cincinnati that the new Indiana fish laws apply to lakes and ban fishing in May June and July. Clubs may lose Indiana properties and relocate to Michigan or Wisconsin as fines are severe.

William Decker of Shepard was buried Tuesday in his front yard with a bright red coffin. A headstone read Here lies the body of William Decker, who always paid 100 cents on the dollar. Services were led by an attorney. In Davenport smallpox cases arise in LeClaire with quarantine for the homes of affected children per Dr. Gamble’s report to health officials.
Ex Governor E R Scott of South Carolina is reported to have suffered apoplexy. The item notes other brief world and national topics including international warnings, weather, and trade developments.

San Francisco May 4 Postmaster Montague reports Washington orders to seize and hold pamphlets mailed to Manila by Edward Atkinson. The action targets third class matter only and does not apply to sealed letters or other mail. Montague states the orders are from the postmaster general and are subject to further directives.
A meeting is called for May 19 in the University of Illinois hall to discuss forming an Illinois Historical Society to preserve state materials. Organizers include Judge H W Beckwith Danville Professor K E James Chicago and George N Back Springfield with university and historical figures listed.
In Rock Island Illinois the twentieth biennial session of the Illinois grand lodge of the Ancient Order of United Workmen adopts a constitutional amendment excluding saloonkeepers and bartenders from membership. Four hundred delegates attend led by grand master workman John W Yantis. The Degree of Honor auxiliary also meets.
The Fidelity Building and Savings Union announces voluntary liquidation amid heavy losses caused by adverse legislation. Founded by Harry LaFalette and the late Bruce Carr, the union held five stock series of $1,000,000 each and operated in Illinois and other states. President James E. Patton reports most sources will payout except No 4. The organization holds Chicago real estate with 5,000 stockholders and $600,000 in outstanding loans.
General Booth announces the Salvation Army intends to establish an industrial farm of 15 000 acres in western Australia. In Chicago policemen used clubs on a mob attempting to free two prisoners.
Dr. T. W. Wiley testifies before the Senate pure food committee in Chicago about widespread adulteration. He cites dairy products butter and cheese as commonly altered with cheaper fats and water, honey with substitutions, lard with vegetable oils, and coffee with molasses flour and colored fillers. He notes producers sell adulterated goods as the pure article and urges accurate labeling and pricing. He also describes fillers from peanut shells and widespread use of adulterants in mustard beer jelly vinegar and other items.
