Laos cease-fire pledge breaks as Pathet Lao attack Muong Phalane

In Laos a Pathet Lao broadcast announced a general cease-fire effective 8 a.m. local, but hours later rebels attacked Muong Phalane on the main road to Vietnam. Capt. Kong Le led the cease-fire order and later urged troops to stop firing, while observers suspected miscommunication.

Local Students Shine At Class A State Music Contest

Washington Community High School earned ten Division I and 22 Division II ratings at the Class A state contest in Fourfield. Music directors Alan Bergstrom and Vernon Feuerhelm praised the strong showing, with a lengthy list of individual winners across drums, woodwinds, brass, strings, and voice.

Kalona Woman Ends Her Life in Stark Tragedy

A 29 year old Kalona woman Hazel Marie Ferreira was found dead at the home of Mr and Mrs A Lloyd Swartzen druber with whom she lived. She had been employed part time at Pleasantview Rest Home Kalona and had recently suffered a nervous collapse. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 1 30 PM at East Union Mennonite Church with burial in East Union Cemetery. She was born August 15 1931 in Trapp Kansas and survived by her mother and a brother in Kansas City Kansas.

Trinity Pastor Named For Public Relations

The Rev. Alfred A. Bertke of Trinity Lutheran Church was appointed Tuesday as one of ten circuit public relations men in the eastern district of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod at the annual district meeting. Rev. Walter Wendt of Davenport’s Holy Cross Lutheran Church announced the appointment. The department links with The Lutheran Hour led by Dr. Oswald C. Hoffmann.

Student Artwork Display at University Patio Show

About 100 pieces by State University of Iowa students are on display May 6 to 12 as part of the Art Guild Patio Show on the Sun Porch of Iowa Memorial Union. The exhibit runs during Creative Arts Week May 8 to 11 with student paintings prints drawings sculpture and crafts featured. Open daily when the Union is open 6 am to 10 15 pm Sunday through Thursday and 6 am to midnight Friday and Saturday.

The Marion Avenue United Presbyterian Church Men s Brotherhood hosted a This Is Your Life style program for J M Finney at a Monday evening ladies night meeting attended by about 100. Rural House vote shifts funds away from primary roads

In Des Moines the Iowa House voted 47-40-13 to allocate RATF funds 47 percent to primary and interstate roads, 40 percent to secondary and farm to market roads, and 13 percent to cities and towns, a move seen as risking interstate matching funds and drawing urban rural clashes over road priorities.
