Newton Franklin Nelson, a local jeweler, was robbed of diamonds by two bandits. One bandit showed startling restraint by returning eight uninsured gems after learning they were not insured, while the other kept the loot.
DES MOINES five major oil companies Deep Rock Oil Corp Shell Petroleum Corp Sinclair Refining Co Standard Oil Co of Indiana and Mid Continent Petroleum Co indicated they will contest the constitutionality of the Town chain store tax law as a matter of self preservation.
Ten thousand three cent tercentenary stamps are available at the Burlington post office. The lavender stamps match the special delivery design and feature an engraving of the charter oak with dates 13 5 and 05. Connecticut appears on the left and Tercentenary on the right.
A. C. Timpe’s car was stolen and later dumped in an alley. Inside the vehicle officers found a well worn leather bound prayer book not belonging to Timpe, suggesting a religiously inclined thief.
Burlington official records show Floyd Raines of Division Street turned in 74 groundhog scalps to the county auditor, drawing a bounty totaling 18 dollars and 50 cents at 26 cents per animal.
Des Moines reports Gov Clyde L Herring will implement as soon as possible the legislative committee recommendations on the Iowa liquor control commission including the proposed dismissal of Leslie E Francis local adviser to the commission.
Harry Burns age 43 tried to board a moving freight train despite a warning from his son-in-law. He fell near Fifth street and Western avenue and was taken by police ambulance to Mercy hospital.
Ottumwa reports University of Illinois football coach Robert Zuppke will address the Eleventh district Rotary convention in Ottumwa on May 6 7. He is billed as the event speaker for the gathering of local Rotary club members and district officers.
W. Jenson, a University of Iowa senior from Atlantic Iowa, receives a $25 prize for a paper on mechanical engineering presented at the Midwest student conference of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in Chicago.
Relief authorities take control of medical aid in the county under the optional Iowa Emergency Relief administration plan, centralizing operations and coordinating relief services.
Iowa cites saxophones as the crowd favorite in the annual state high school music contest now underway. It marks the first time the instrument was officially included in the event.

Federal Relief Administrator Harry Hopkins cut Illinois from May relief funds for not meeting cooperation demands. Illinois must add 3 million dollars monthly to its 14 million dollar relief bill, while Georgia and Pennsylvania face reduced or threatened aid without increased state contributions. Six states, including Iowa, were omitted from allotted lists due to haste, not permanent cuts.

J W H Baird was named adjutant of the Spanish War Veterans at their meeting at the Congress hotel. Fifteen attended the luncheon. Mr Baird succeeds the late Milan Shields in the office of adjutant.
Beicaars argues that opponents of joining Europe are narrow minded and selfish. He notes world leaders from Canada Australia South Africa and New Zealand criticized England, implying Americans opposing involvement are in poor company.
John T. Reese aged 83 died at 8 80 this morning at his daughter’s home 427 East Van Buren street after a two year illness following a stroke. Born September 1 1851 he lived in Sioux City over sixty years and later with his daughter here. He was a commercial salesman and member of the United Commercial Travelers Baymen of Bagdad and the Elks. Survived by a daughter in Washington and two sons Charles G Reese of Sioux City and Percy C Reese of Chicago. Burial in Sioux City tomorrow with services there.
Washington high school boys quartet Elwyn Gardner Don Boyer Harry Barker and George Masson earned the only superior rating among boys small vocal groups at the Iowa state contest in McBride auditorium. Miss Helen Coffey coached them as teachers noted excellent ratings for other ensembles and individuals, with Mason City and To ledo also receiving excellence.
Snow covered the northeastern Iowa counties of Winneshiek and surrounding areas with depths from one to over three inches. Waukon Elkader and Decorah reported three inches while Waterloo had the same amount and Charles City had an inch. Lamont was 62 degrees the warmest spot and Estherville Forest City were at 30. Storms caused deaths in Arkansas and Kentucky with lightning and tornado activity across the south.
A funeral service for Rev Theodore M Balcoff was held in Columbus Junction with ministers assisting. The burial will be at Galena Hl. Sermon by Rev Mowry S Axtell of Detroit Mich a college classmate and friend. The service began at 9 am with prayers and readings led by Rev S F Wenger Crawfordsville ex moderator.
Postmaster M. C. DeLong reports April bond sales 50 percent higher than March as inquiries rise. Bonds range from 25 to 10000 dollars with discounts: 25 for 18.75, 50 for 37.50, 100 for 75, 500 for 375. Ten year value increases by one third.
James Glidden of the Chamber of Commerce advocates geography lessons for Southern post masters. While visiting the Carolinas he mailed a package to his home bearing Cape Cod in one corner. The postmaster asked who would pay the charges, assuming it was C O D.
Former shoppers praised and criticized local Washington retailers during a Chamber of Commerce meeting held at the Congress hotel. Mrs. Gates and H L Walker urged better roads parking and rest rooms, discussed clerk training and salesmanship, and urged roadway improvements from Coppock road to Rubio area to ease country trade.
Katherine Little and Helen Melinski lead in the junior college production Thru the Key hole at Washington High School auditorium under Mrs. C S Williams. Eight roles sustain the lively show with lively accents and stage design by Ruth Marie Morrison and Betty Stephen.

Perry Iowa May 3 the school board refused to reconsider its failure to re hire five high school faculty members sparking a student walkout of about 100 students. Rev Arthur Jervis refused to meet with conciliators keeping the dispute unsettled over three days.
Delicatessen The Pantry Shelf will open next Saturday at 10 AM run by Mr and Mrs Harry McCall and Mrs Wahneetah Ingalls. The shop promises home baked foods daily including pies cakes bread cookies cottage cheese and meats. It will offer ready to serve small portions for family meals and feature a woman’s exchange selling foods under numbers on commission opposite the State theater in Washington.
