Severe wind and rain struck northwest Iowa last night causing extensive damage in Cherokee Moville and nearby towns. Barns were levelled houses unroofed lines down with no loss of life. Moville reports over 109000 dollars in damage.
Harold Bitting won first place in the peace oratorical contest at Parsons College with "The American Undercurrent" last Tuesday. He will represent Parsons in the state peace oratorical contest at Simpson College on May 5 and is a freshman notable for his debater success.
Chicago basks in early summer warmth as residents enjoy a sunny spell. The Weather Bureau reported the city's high surged to 83 degrees, marking the hottest May day in 15 years.
Navy dirigible Los Angeles returns to its hangar in Lakehurst New Jersey after a nine hour repair and training flight.

Five year period statistics from a city’s idental dispensary in public schools show diphtheria declining from 36.6 percent to 18.7 percent, measles from 20 percent to 4.1 percent, and scarlet fever from 14.1 percent to .5 percent among school children.
May 6 to 12 is National Music Week with Fortnightly Club Music Department sponsoring activities. The mayor invites all citizens to participate and support the week, highlighting music's civic and spiritual value.
More than 2,000 high school students compete as Iowa state music contests begin today in Iowa City and run through Friday and Saturday. I J Roorda a 45 year old farmer near Des Moines was dragged by a runaway team of horses while leading them into a field and died after being entangled in the reins for more than half a mile.
The Hall Brothers miniature circus arrives at the Washington Y M C A gymnasium May 9 and 10 as a Y benefit entertainment. Built at one twentieth scale and operated by mechanism, the pine wood show features a full mock circus with three rings and a moving cast, crafted by Harry Carmichael over four years. The Y endorses the unique exhibit.
Lucy Bruty and Elsie Wagner, top seniors, will deliver valedictory and salutatory addresses at the Washington high school commencement on Friday evening May 25. Bruce Gates of Waterloo gives the main address. Musical numbers include a vocal group and soprano solos by Winifred Allen. The ten highest graduates will be announced later.
Mrs Inene Chadwick O'Brien died yesterday near Keswick Iowa after Brights disease. Born April 22 1906 in Bloomfield she moved with her parents to Keswick area thirteen years ago attended Heights grade school and two years of high school worked at the local telephone office two years and married John O'Brien November 7 1925. She leaves her husband her mother Mrs John Chadwick two sisters Mrs Howard Anderson and Mrs T J Riordan of Boston Mass three brothers Ray Marion and Levi. Funeral services will be held at the Catholic church in Keswick Saturday morning with graveside rites. Time to be announced.
Homer Birney driving east on East Madison street drove onto the railroad track ahead of a Burlington motor car. He did not see the train until on the track, sped to clear it, but the train struck the rear of his car nearly overturning it and breaking both back wheels. Birney was unhurt. Obstructed view and curved track at the corner make the crossing dangerous.
Reports from Tokyo and Shanghai sketch a grim picture of early May clashes in China. Nationalist forces recaptured Tsinan, with claims of over 100 Japanese killed near the city. Reinforcements and protection of Japanese property were under discussion as Japanese and Chinese troops clashed in Taijan. A seaplane raid on Shanghai wounded two and damaged a building near the northern railway station.
In a combat at Lona, thirty rebels were killed by federal cavalry. Advices to the Grafico report the engagement occurred recently near Mexico City.
Washington high school will send five boys to the Eldon meet on Saturday while most of the squad attends Grinnell. Eldon entries include N Young S Smith in the quarter mile W Booth in the half mile J Young and Davidson in the low hurdles and Davidson in the shot put. The Italian dirigible Italia was spotted over Arholma Sweden en route to Vadsee Norway as part of a planned flight to Spitzbergen and the north pole. It is expected to refuel at Vadsee before continuing to Kings Bay Spitzbergen on the 1000 mile trip from Stolp Germany.
William D. Haywood once more falls ill in Moscow. Reports say the IWW figure is in a Kremlin hospital in a comatose state after weeks of illness.
Mrs. Sarah Davidson aged around 90, long time Crawfordsville resident and Presbyterian church member, died Wednesday after a short bedfast period. She was born December 21 1837 in Venango County Pennsylvania and married Archibald Davidson in 1859, later settling in Crawfordsville in 1900. Survived by nine children, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two sisters and a brother, funeral Friday at 3 PM at her residence conducted by Rev BE Griffith.
By wagons and trucks 40 000 bushels of corn were being hauled to two elevators at Avoca today. Long lines of wagons and horses recalled earlier days as the crop valued at 37 000 dollars or 94 cents per bushel moved through the town.
Several Washington physicians expect to attend the 77th annual convention of the Iowa State Medical Society in Cedar Rapids next week. Dr C A Boice is named as the delegate from the Washington County Society.

Two day extension for filing petitions for county offices ends Saturday night. Fred M. Morrison in charge of several closed banks in the state announced that the Wapello State Savings Bank will pay its first dividend of ten percent on May 15.

Washington reports House debate over the McNary-Haugen farm relief bill as members clash on procedure. Key actions include Mapes ruling on direct re vote on the equalization fee and Ketcham moving debenture plan amendments before the panel settles on the Aswell versus Haugen provisions. Opponents expect the equalization fee to be dropped in final action with a 141 to 120 setback yesterday.
The Bremen flyers led by Baron Gunther Von Huenefeld Captain Hermann Koehl and Major James Fitzmaurice are exhausted after a grueling sequence of receptions following their ice bound Greenly Island ordeal. All engagements for tomorrow evening were cancelled as they rest at the Hotel Astor after luncheon.
Robert Wilson a 59 year old native Irishman naturalized American mine owner has been kidnapped by bandits near Ciudad Bravo Guerrero state and is being held for ransom. Fellow mining man Jose Rueda Brava was also abducted as federal soldiers search for the bandits.
