The city council and the Washington band announce 19 summer concerts in Central Park. Thirteen Saturday evenings and six Thursday nights run June through September, with no city charge for a special extra concert this week. Weather delays Iowa City broadcast postponed again.
Coach J A McKinstry said Washington high school track will likely enter next Saturday’s meet at Eldon or Clinton, entered in both, weather and road conditions will decide. He noted fixes for two or three county meet disappointments and aims for Little Six at Burlington. West Chester led county with 50.5 points. corrections adjust Geyer and Wellman scores.
Ernest Atchison as Memorial day finance chairman says solicitors will visit Washington business houses Wednesday or Thursday to secure contributions. Funds will cover Decoration Day expenses, which are not heavy.
Miss Florence Cochran, a Warren county rural schoolteacher, was found not guilty of charges accusing her of incompetency and telling obscene stories to pupils. Agnes Samuelson, state superintendent of public instruction, upheld prior acquittal by County Superintendent W. M. McGee, after seven children testified about the disputed tales.
A rainstorm drenched Washington with 1.08 inches while Ainsworth reported near three inches. Hail damaged Frank Chihak farm, with nearby orchards and gardens affected. Strong winds and street flooding sent water into many cellars, creating scattered damage and small ponds.
The city council approved water mains installation from North Marion Avenue to North Second Avenue along Twelfth Street to connect dead ends at the city limits. They also authorized employer’s liability insurance for the fire department and delegated signage for Washington as The Cleanest City in Iowa to the improvement committee with power to act.
Mayor John W Applegate announces the start of winter tin can collection by contractor K Gordon. Work will begin in the north part of town with wards one and two, possibly reaching wards three and four the next day depending on cans found. Residents should place can accumulations in visible containers near the alley for pickup. J L Coffey and J E Coffey of West Chester were in town yesterday.
The text notes large gifts are not expected and aims to cover two years of expenses. It describes a bi yearly solicitation and hopes all businesses will contribute nominal amounts to the fund.
Chairman J Reade McCrory reports Washington County has donated 1000 to Mississippi flood relief. Today 250 was sent to St Louis Red Cross, 80 from Ainsworth Presbyterian, 60 from Crawfordsville churches, rest from Washington community. Officials hope more towns join in and banks accept donations as nationwide drive doubles funds. Mrs Mary Cullett returns from Rock Island after visiting son Will.
FAIRMONT W V A May 3 Eight blackened bodies were recovered from the Everettsville mine near here where 109 miners were trapped by an explosion Saturday. Rescuers later found seven more bodies, bringing the known dead to 25. Sixteen men rescued earlier remained in hospitals recovering.
The Washington Y M C A will close for four days during Clean up Week with only scheduled events allowed. From tomorrow morning through next Monday the pool gym showers and facilities close except for Junior High gym classes Wednesday and Thursday. The Hi Y mothers and sons banquet and rural eighth grade exams will be held in the community room Thursday and Friday.
Partly unsettled conditions persist in the eastern portion with mostly cloudy skies tonight and Wednesday. Expect slightly cooler temperatures tonight across the area.
Vicksburg Mississippi reports the Rolling Fork levee breach floods the business district to four feet. Cattle losses run high and evacuations continue as Red Cross relief seeks to move refugees amid rising flood crests in Louisiana and Arkansas.
The public is invited to two high school music programs this week. Tonight at eight the miscellaneous program features a silver offering to cover expenses. Wednesday afternoon the Girl Reserves sponsor a concert with violin, piano, ukulele numbers, and a pageant of American music including Yankee Doodle and Battle Hymn of the Republic.
Smith Riley a Grace Hill resident and former Washington native died at the county hospital from a horse kick suffered last week while working on the Mrs John McKinstry farm west of town. He leaves his son Fred Riley of Paola Kansas and a Kansas brother. Age about 65 to 70. Funeral plans were pending awaiting word from his son.
The First Presbyterian Church congregation reports $37,415 raised in the drive to build a new church on the site of the old one in Atlantic Indiana. Plans estimate the building cost between $40,000 and $45,000.
