United States Steel announced a 5.7 percent base increase on a wide range of steel products with extra charges around 3.5 percent to take effect May 20 after the administration's anti inflation restraints expired. Nineteen seventy four.
Iowa Revenue Director Donald Briggs reports Democrats ahead of Republicans in the $1 checkoff program. By end of April 13 percent of 423,424 returns used the option, yielding Democrats about $36,597 and Republicans $18,597. April totals: Democrats $14,706 and Republicans $7,490. Projected annual total around $70,000 to $80,000 with education needed to boost participation.
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger arrived in Jerusalem from Egypt to press for an end to the Israeli Syrian fighting. Demonstrators urged no concessions to Israel as Kissinger met Israeli leaders to plan disengagement terms and define withdrawal lines. He planned to fly to Syria Friday after meetings, denying reports of any partial agreement.
Nixon's lawyers refused to meet the subpoena deadline for the 64 Watergate tapes and vowed to seek Supreme Court review. Judge Sirica set deadlines for Jaworski to respond to the White House motion to quash and for a Wednesday hearing as the House Judiciary Committee pressed its impeachment inquiry.

Proceeds fund AFS foreign student exchange with dramatic skits music magic vaudeville and dance.
The Iowa House approved a bill to create a nine member commission and a division on alcoholism within the health department with a 1.2 million dollar appropriation. It redirects intoxicated persons from jail to treatment centers, shifts care to community centers, and lowers county costs from 80 to 25 percent. Two amendments to emergency commitment provisions failed amid debate.
A spokesman for the Independent Drivers Association said a special meeting would be held in Council Bluffs to discuss a possible nationwide strike by independent truckers in mid May. The strike is slated to start May 13 if government action is not taken by May 8, with a meeting set for Thursday night to decide on next steps.

He warned against charismatic leaders, praised moral character, and urged humility, discipline, and intelligent leadership to confront national crises. The banquet honored 43 Washington High School seniors with B averages.
