Washington UPI reports President Johnson’s $962 million anti poverty bill is set to undergo drastic reshaping before it reaches the House floor this month. Democratic members of the administration and Congress discuss major revisions likely altering funding and program scopes.
Bob Scott of Route 3 Washington will demonstrate a patented tool carrier at the Quad State Minimum Tillage Field Day in Sioux Center Iowa on May 5. The event, hosted by Iowa State University, features 21 implements and starts at 9:30 AM with a rain date of May 7.
A Nebraska firm, Nixon Feed, liquidates to Kalona's Nixon and Co. President J A Machier of Nebraska Consolidated Mills Co reports the acquisition completed. Nixon operates livestock feed mills in Omaha Albion Des Moines Sioux City and Washington. Elia Shaila Miller of Kalona dies aged 51 after hospital stay. Funeral in Kalona Methodist Church with burial at Sharon Hill Cemetery.
Premier Khrushchev in Moscow warns that US reconnaissance flights over Cuba risk a world war. Accompanied by Ahmed Ben Bella, he assures support for Cuba while denying a secret deal with the United States. He vows to defend Cuba’s sovereignty and peace despite Western pressure and new anti aircraft weapons shown in Red Square.
In Saigon harbor the U S Card, an aircraft ferry, was sunk by a blast believed to be an underwater charge. Four Americans were wounded, two seriously, in a waterfront grenade assault hours later. The 9,800 ton converted carrier list and settled in the Saigon River with civilian crew aboard. Captain Borge Langeland led the ship as investigators questioned dockworkers.
A tornado tore through Temple Texas injuring 16 people including 10 children as it crossed 30 blocks. Emerson Elementary and Dunbar High were hardest hit with roofs torn and gym and cafeteria damaged. Hospitals and railroad yards suffered damage. one hospital patient and a doctor were knocked into a hallway by debris. Authorities reported no fatalities.
The Washington County Chapter of the American Red Cross honors Gray Ladies and Gray Men for hospital volunteer work. Names and hours include Mrs. Walter Anderson 1,423 hours. Mrs. Rodney Arnold 2,879. Donna Patterson 126. Beth Brinning 1,403. and others. Gray Ladies volunteer Fridays, Gray Men evenings, and Gray Men Thursdays at the VA hospital with listed hours.
Dr J F Mallory chairman of the survey committee announced today that there is definite interest in a college photo from Dallas. The statement reflects early responses and underscores ongoing efforts to gather support for the project.

Robert B. Ferrell, ex principal and vocal music instructor at Washington High School, resigns to become first assistant high school principal in the Robbinsdale Minnesota district. The system, serving New Hope Crystal Golden Valley and Robbinsdale, runs two high schools of about 1800 students each. Ferrell moved to Mason City in 1961 after leading Washington, has led AFS sponsor chapter, and engaged in church and Lions Club work. He will relocate after June 30.

A 37 year old Florida Florida resident and former candidate named Charles P. English was jailed in Ingham County awaiting psychiatric evaluation after trying to force entry into Governor Romney's office. He claimed Nixon involvement and warned of Communists while carrying a .38 revolver, a jackknife, and pamphlets. Governor Romney dismissed the incident and joked about Nixon and the Oregon primary.
