A district court jury in Marshalltown failed to reach a verdict after 29 hours of deliberation in the case of John Hynk Tama postmaster and editor charged with driving while intoxicated. The panel stood 11 to 1 for acquittal.
Mrs. Bertha Graham files a damage suit in Hampton seeking five thousand dollars from her brother Howard Hart. She alleges he grabbed her by the neck and knocked her down injuring her right arm hip and leg.
A Boone organization forms the Boone A bicycle club to teach safety. Local officers and state patrolmen will address the youthful members on the idea that today’s bike riders become tomorrow’s auto drivers.
In Cedar Rapids an accident left a car driven by Harry Hanson, 25, badly cut after it struck a truck carrying eggs parked near railway tracks. The collision pushed the egg truck 150 feet.
Lineville reports Dr. C. E. Lovett treated two patients injured by horses on the same day marking an unusual coincidence in local medical cases.
Des Moines mourns the death of Mayor Dwight N. Lewis after a heart attack at his home. The unexpected passing ends his 26 day term as the city’s chief executive and shocks residents.
Kenneth Evans 23 of Chicago was visiting relatives in Centerville when his hand was crushed in a corn crusher. The injury required amputation.
Funeral services for Bobbie Mullins and Albert Estabrook were held this afternoon in Muscatine after the two six and five year old boys drowned in Musser park's wading pool. Witnesses cited a slippery floor as the cause of the accident in about three feet of water.
Boone Aleorge Billmire a 66 year old veteran North Western railroad engineer brought an eastbound passenger train to a perfect stop at the station here then slumped to the cab floor and died of apoplexy in the cab at the moment of stopping the train.
An elderly couple, Mr. and Mrs. Will Matheny, perished from fatal burns after a wartime blast ripped through their Bedford home at Blockton as he lit the kitchen stove. Reports say he may have mistaken cleaning fluid for kerosene.
Robert Dulany, 17, a Drake University freshman, narrowly escaped serious harm when an air compression tank exploded. He was knocked about 12 feet and thrown through a doorway onto a concrete driveway but survived with only minor injuries.
Ainsworth reports the death of Mrs. Gertrude Thoma Golden in Oklahoma City Oklahoma. Her brother Orville Thoma and sisters Mrs. Thoma and Mrs. Gladys Evans traveled to Oklahoma City, with the body to be brought back to Ainsworth for burial. The funeral party is expected to arrive Wednesday.
Catherine Masson a University of Iowa student arrived Friday evening to spend the weekend with her parents Dr and Mrs W J Masson and departed this morning for Iowa City.
A three car collision on primary road No 1, about 11 45 Saturday night, left one car badly wrecked and two others less serious. Wes ley Lowry attempted to pass Weidner, causing the crash that also involved Guy Stumpf and Kenneth Weidner. A dust cloud from a fourth car aided the accident. Jim Stoops sustained a five stitch cut. Sheriff Putnam filed charges against Lowry for improper passing under the circumstances.
Forrest Schirmer remains in county jail awaiting a district court hearing on bootlegging charges. He was arraigned before Justice J. F. Boyee, held on $500 bond, and admitted selling liquor. Deputies arrested him at the carnival grounds after a sale of diluted whiskey at a state store bottling.
Mrs Bert Pierce and Mrs Will Sheetz received word yesterday of the death of their aunt Mrs Hugh Thompson of Ocean Park California. Mr Thompson was an uncle to Mrs Sheetz Charlie Thompson and Mrs Pierce. He was born here and lived here as a child but has been away for many years.
Adolf Hitler left Berlin at 4:30 p.m. with top advisers to meet Mussolini in Rome. The trip aims to demonstrate Italy and Germany remain close allies and to signal the Rome-Berlin axis endures amid democratic wooing and a new Anglo-French alliance.
President William Green of the American Federation of Labor told House hearings that 3,700,000 more are unemployed now than last September. He backed Roosevelt's recovery plan a $4.512 billion lend and spend program as sufficient to meet the crisis. Federation figures show 7,500,000 unemployed last September and 11,200,900 today.

In Potsdam Germany amid faded imperial splendor the houses of Hohenzollern and Romanoff were joined by the marriage of Prince Louis Ferdinand and Grand Duchess Kira. Former Crown Prince Frederick Wilhelm and Grand Duke Cyril witnessed at the civil ceremony before the religious rite.
A sealing fleet of eight ships arrived at St Johns landing 226,747 pelts valued at about five hundred thousand dollars. It marked the largest catch since 1916.
The community notes the passing of Mrs Thompson, aged seventy, widow of a Covenanter church member. Her funeral is scheduled for tomorrow, with family ties to Hugh Thompson and local relatives, including Mrs Pierce who visited relatives two years ago.

United Presbyterian featured Miss Carolyn Hamilton directing choir and Miss Helen Harvey on organ with The Lost Chord and The Organ Speaks. Evening numbers included an organ medita tion At Twilight with solo parts by Merle Simpson Merrill George and Ralph Kleese. Young people spoke on How to Choose a Vocation Wisely. School program tonight.
Des Moines May 2 The relief costs under the new need point system show a sharp reduction. Only 31 Iowa counties receive state relief aid in May with requests totaling 167000, down from 222000 previously spent. For the first four months of 1938 expenditures total 1032000, about 272000 less than the same period last year, aided by WPA allotments and better business conditions.

Tomorrow night Mrs. Sorden John Yousling and Daryl Fetters perform at the Methodist church after an afternoon WSUI broadcast.

President Roosevelt intervened in the wage hour bill dispute by urging 218 House members to sign a petition to discharge the rules committee. He voiced support for Mrs. Norton’s plan to bring the Norton wage hour bill to the floor, despite deep northern southern party rifts and looming adjournment threats. Mrs Norton said the drive would begin Friday.
At the Iowa V F W department council meeting in Des Moines yesterday, officers announced Cedar Rapids encampment dates June 19 to 21 and a state redistricting plan. Burham heads redistricting and soldiers home improvements. Radda joins publicity and Neiswanger the by laws committee. Mrs. Dr. W Anderson and Hattie McConnell returned from Kansas City after attending the national nurses convention.
A fragment notes that a highly crystalline dynamite dated 1903 was found at a site linked to a schoolhouse built that year. It warns that even slight confusion could have set off the explosive due to its sensitivity when crystallized.
