In Fort Madison a May 26 event plans a parade of money items and bric a brac while a man faces charges over morphine possession and a $100 bill pocketed. In Des Moines Taylor county residents receive notices about delinquent pension taxes not owed and the county treasurer reports many have paid in full and received receipts.
Iowa City reports a final 13 percent payout to depositors of the former First National Bank of Iowa City. The payment totals $57,181, raising the bank’s total disbursements to 93 percent of deposits.
Louise Murphy and Margaret Herrington, farm girls near here, planted 400 ash seedlings as their Arbor Day observance. The seedlings were their prize for winning a conservation contest tied to the 4-H girls camp at Eldora last summer.
Mrs Archie Musgrove aged 27 wife of a local factory employee is in Skiff hospital with a fractured spine and broken ribs after stepping on a board covering a cold air register at a local Methodist church and falling about 15 feet into the basement.
DES MOINES A six month struggle to prove an emergency at the board of control institutions ended with a $94,000 allotment by the legislative interim committee. The grant carried a sharp rebuke for overspending in the current fiscal year and a warning to avoid repeats.
Johnson County Treasurer W E Smith recorded $3 in his receipts as a conscience gift from “a taxpayer with a worried conscience.” A letter enclosed with the money stated it would be credited to an unknown taxpayer and entered under money and credit.
An estimated four hundred people attended the vocational guidance conference held yesterday at Washington junior college. high school seniors from about fifteen schools were present. Doc Nethergall led a sheriff association display with equipment.
President leaves for vacation while Gov George H Earle sacks AG Charles Margiotti amid a Democratic party feud in Pennsylvania. Earle seeks the Senate nomination opposed by Philadelphia Mayor Davis Wilson backed by Senator Guffey and John L Lewis. Gov race pits Lieut Gov Kennedy Charles A Jones and Margiotti in independent bid. Margiotti accuses legislation of being bought with bribes.
Iowa leaders concluded the new LaFollette progressive party will have little to no effect on this year's state election. Options to run an independent ticket or endorse the Farmer-Labor slate were deemed unlikely or only nominal.
Paris reports Premier Daladier secured assurances in London that Britain would aid France if attacked while assisting Czechoslovakia. Officials denied new commitments but sources say Britain would move quickly to help France and be drawn in if a major European war erupts.
The new downtown Wolf Floral store opened with a seven hour rush. More than 2000 roses and 1000 carnations were given as favors to visitors, roses to ladies and carnations to gentlemen. Mary Westphal and Carroll Warford managed lapel flowers while Donald Benblossom aided staff. The opening coincided with a junior college vocational guidance conference drawing many out of town youths.
John W. Vaughn was executed in Huntsville Texas at 12 42 after a final speech and a moment of talk as he faced the electric chair He smoked a cigar and carried a Bible and three roses saying he hoped those roses would be carried by the four men who take their own Maker’s journey He asked to say a final message to his wife and child before the switch was thrown.
Rev. William M. Nichol Jr of Washington Presbyterian reports a United Presbyterian radio program on KFNF Shenandoah Iowa to air Sundays from 2:00 to 2:30 PM featuring a minister talk and church music. Dr. W A Pollock of College Springs, Iowa, Nichol’s father in law, will speak tomorrow.
Major Leslie T. Saul announced he will submit his resignation as night marshal to the city council at the next meeting. He was named to the post April 4 and was to assume duties May 1. He cited opposition from citizens over his income from other sources and said he believed he was qualified and would earn his salary.
The Ys Men club leads a city playground program with a goal to raise 120 dollars in two weeks for a central site. Plans call for transportation from various areas, improved toilet and water facilities, sewer connections, and modern sanitation to gain parental and community support.

President Roosevelt arrived in Charlestown South Carolina by special train and transferred to a navy yard cruiser Philadelphia for sea voyage. He was greeted by Governor Olin D. The trip comes as he departs Washington for a ten day rest from the turmoil of the administration’s recovery program and a looming $4.5 billion spending and lending plan.

The project plans a twelve week program in June July and August with early start if funds and preparations are ready. George Mohr of the junior high staff will supervise boys with a hand craft program and games while Joe Duea and Leilah Soule assist. A qualified young woman will lead the girls department with a supervisor to be announced. Success depends on public response.
