Senate lobby committee reviewed a Stayton letter suggesting President Hoover is not a dry at heart but leans dry for political reasons. The hearings also probed wet propaganda and a Delaware school post favoring anti-prohibition goals.
Coach Jim Shultz plans to take a squad of sixteen Washington high school runners to Bloomfield for a southern Iowa meet featuring top high schools. The team aims to score points as a warm-up for the Little Six contest at Burlington next Friday. Washington relay teams performed well at the Drake relays and the mile and half mile quarters placed second at Duke, promising strong showings against Little Six rivals.
Washington high school is assured of first or second place in the Class B state boys glee club contest after singing in Iowa City with five other clubs. They qualified to perform with Toledo high school in the finals at four this afternoon, with a close competition expected. The Washington girls trio placed third in the girls small vocal groups contest, while Mason City won and Marshalltown was second. judges noted the trio’s merit but that sextets held an advantage.
Opponents of large campaign outlays quietly observe Ruth Hanna McCormick spent a quarter of a million dollars of her own money for the Republican Illinois Senate nomination. Private talk suggests campaign expenditure questions could reemerge if she wins in November. Some who pursued censure of Senator Truman Newberry over 195,000 in his primary withhold judgment.
The Washington high school band of 438 players under Milburn A McKay travels to Iowa City for the Iowa High School Music Association state contest. Washington won the district meet at Fairfield and advances to the finals. The program features a balanced lineup and a long list of named performers making the trip.
Washington audiences enjoyed a well staged production of The House of a Thousand Thrills by Leslie Chadwick Browning. Priscilla Morrison led a capable cast under director Maude Newell Williams with Miss Wallace supervising props. The mystery centers on an emerald necklace in a Long Island haunted house with intrigue, burglary, and staged thrills.
An exhibit truck from the Florida forestry department is expected on Washington streets today. The vehicle arrived from Cedar Rapids and is part of a display sent by A. L. Baker the department chief. The note mentions a nephew of Mrs. Carl Roberts of Washington.
Final matches in the marble tournament will be played Saturday at 2 30 PM at Heights school grounds. Junior high division finals are scheduled for today after school.
Christian Church revivalist Davidson denounced sin with Sunday vehemence and urged righteousness with Sco ville power and Gypsy Smith tenderness in his sermon last evening. Brighton was well represented as delegations from Muscatine and Fort Madison were promised. Davidson continues to draw crowds without extra attractions.
The Iowa state highway commission announced bids for surfacing the unpaved Diagonal route linking Florida and Washington will be opened May 12. May 18 bids cover about 83 miles, adding to 1930 lettings totaling 938 of 1,000 miles. The commission also considers paving 16.4 miles of U S 63 in Jasper county, 10.6 miles of highway 161 in Washington and Henry counties, 1 67 miles of highway 218 in Bremere county, and fractional segments on highways 32 and 34 near Menlo and Council Bluffs.
Census figures released by Miss Merta Mitchell show Washington township increasing by 329 over ten years to a population of 1 582, with many gains attributed to residents just outside the city limits counted in the township. Despite gains, Washington county overall remains 170 people smaller than in 1920.
National music week begins in Washington with a union service at United Presbyterian church featuring choirs from community churches. A silver offering supports music week expenses and a full program will be in the Journal tomorrow.
The official weather observer reports 1.71 inches of rain over the past three days. Rain eased yesterday evening but strong winds thunder and lightning accompanied the system.

Mrs. John Fred Huff, 72, died at 4:30 this morning at her Columbus City home after weeks of blood poisoning and related complications. The family long lived on a nearby farm and later in Columbus City. Funeral services are set for 2 PM Sunday at the Columbus City Methodist church with burial in the local cemetery. She is survived by her husband, one brother, and four sisters.
Mr and Mrs George Pauls move this week from North Iowa avenue to a residence one block east of the high school on East Madison Street.
In Columbus Ohio today 1100 rebellious prisoners in isolation quarters caused unrest as an automatic service revolver was stolen from a prison guard. The gun disappeared from the chapel area where soldiers are billeted and may have been taken by another soldier. Inside the enclosure convicts threw rocks at workers outside and Pat McDermott serving life for murder was moved to solitary confinement.
The Washington council Knights of Columbus will initiate a first degree ceremony on Saturday May 3 at eight PM. Fifty candidates from Washington will travel to Iowa City on Sunday May 4 for the second and third degrees. The state convention is set for May 19–20 in Iowa City with Joe Pieper and J M Kelley as delegates. On May 18 seventy five candidates will receive the fourth degree in Iowa City under Judge Donegan of Davenport.
Lightning storm damages Albert Cherry residence at 103 North Avenue B. The barn is destroyed and the house sustains significant damage including plaster loss. Firefighters extinguish a small blaze first, then respond to a larger barn fire that likely struck simultaneously, with contents and home furnishings harmed but no injuries reported. Insurance may not fully cover losses.
Vienna report states 21 year old Franz Mexyr was restrained by police from jumping from a window. He told hospital staff he planned to kill himself due to his inability to fasten his cravat correctly to his collar, deeming life no longer worthwhile.
Storms swept Iowa Kansas Minnesota causing multiple fatalities and extensive damage. In Iowa Mrs Luie Bishop 60 died when a shelter collapsed near Russell. In Kansas and Missouri six others died and many homes were wrecked. In Minnesota car wrecks from floods killed five including two Rochester women and a child and two travelers en route to Duluth died in a skid.
Howling tornadoes sweep seven midwestern states leaving scores dead and many injured. Nebraska records five deaths with Tekamah hardest hit, while Missouri Iowa and Minnesota report multiple fatalities and widespread destruction along the Missouri river corridor. Relief crews rush to assist in Tekamah and neighboring towns as homes are leveled and residents displaced.
The United Presbyterian and Methodist men plan a 6 30 p m banquet Friday May 9 at the United Presbyterian church dining room. United Presbyterian men will furnish the dinner and Methodist men provide the program. If all men attend, expected crowd is 568 with 380 Methodists and 188 Presbyterians present.
