Social security checks rise in Washington County
N E Treat reports 1964 data show 2,940 county residents receive about 2.26 million dollars annually in social security benefits. The new monthly figure tops 188000 dollars, a 4 percent rise from 1964. beneficiaries include retirees, widows, disabled workers, and families. The 1965 year marks 300th month of payments since 1940 and and near 20 million monthly beneficiaries. August 1965 also marks 30th anniversary of the Social Security Act.

Debate over Dominican action at OAS session
Venezuela accused the United States of violating the OAS charter by unilateral intervention in the Dominican Republic as the special session opened. Iowa Senate Approves Welfare Birth Control Material Bill
The Iowa Senate approved an appropriation bill totaling 20.135 million dollars yearly for welfare programs. An amendment allowing voluntary distribution of birth control literature and services to public assistance recipients passed 50 to 3 after protests, with recipients able to refuse. The measure permits charging recipients for all or part of costs. The ADC allocation was kept at 6.1 million annually, higher than current funding, while a separate 4 million per year for Medical Aid to the Aged was also approved.

Wellman Woman Hattie Wagner 82 Dies
Hattie E Wagner 82 died Friday at the Charles O Brown home in Wellman where she had lived the past 20 years. Funeral tentatively set for 2 p.m. Monday at Powell Funeral Home Wellman with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery Washington. She was born August 14 1882 in Washington County daughter of John I Kuhn and Ellen Putman Kuhn. She married Al Wagner September 28 1898 and they farmed until his death. She was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church. Survivors include sister Mayme Dusenberry and nephew John Dusenberry both of Washington and three granddaughters.

UPI reports a Communist arms cache found south of Saigon includes flame throwers and ammunition for several weapons. The haul, discovered by troops in a search that left at least 152 Communists dead, also contained mortars, machine guns, rifles, rockets, explosives, and anti aircraft mounts. Delayed reports note four Japanese surveyors were kidnapped on the Shre Pack River in Darlac Province.

A May Day time-bomb ripped the U S Consulate in Montreal injuring none as police searched for further charges. The blast at 1 20 a m shattered 78 windows and six barred doors buckling the basement ceiling in the two-building complex on embassy row. No one was in the building.
