Cerro Gordo county launches its bookmobile on a maiden trip carrying about 850 books to serve rural schools and farm families. Rural librarian Pearl Jeffords leads the effort with a 2,500 volume public library supply.
Two Marion boys 16 Richard Pinch and Steven Oakley reported they were near an intersection when a car driven by Jesse Joyce Jr 16 Center Point swerved to miss them and struck and fatally injured William Graham 69 Potosi Wis The boys are to appear in police court to answer the hitchhiking charges based on their witness accounts.
The Delaware county board of supervisors called a special election for June 3 to decide bonding the county for 60000 dollars to build and equip a 24 bed hospital, with the levy to be extended over several years, following petitions from residents.
In a Luxembourg mailed letter dated March 27 opened by censor, Louis Rueter of DuBuque reads his parents’ account of wartime hardships including rationed food and 22 Nazi war planes flying overhead.
Eighth passenger on a Black and White Transportation Co. bus had a rear axle break on Highway 20 near the Illinois Central railroad tracks. One rider signalled an approaching train, which stopped and allowed passengers to ride into Dubuque for treatment of bruises.
Mrs. T. A. Maxwell of Clarinda is grandmother of Marvel Maxwell a 19 year old Fort Wayne Indiana radio singer. Maxwell was adopted by the Grandmothers' Club of America as America's Ideal Granddaughter.
Webster City man Guy Spencer, 68, Fort Dodge, fined 100 dollars in municipal court for selling improperly labeled poultry remedies. Unable to pay, he serves 30 days in jail. Three other charges pending include obtaining money under false pretense and illegal poultry stock sales.
Cornell College will be represented by Mary Henaman in Clinton Iowa on May 15 for the Lillian Russell of 1940 contest. Merle Lindston the Drake relays queen will compete for Coe College, with participants from University of Iowa and Grinnell College in the same event linked to Clinton's premiere of The Life of Lillian Russell.
Dr. H A Ironside pastor of Moody Memorial church in Chicago holds a Christian layman's Bible conference at the First Baptist church in Iowa City this afternoon at o'clock and at 7 45 this evening is recognized as one of the world's greatest religious and Bible teachers.
Des Moines reports the Iowa Board of Parole frees 28 prisoners, among them Louis Prescott, 74, who escaped in 1917 then led a model life before recapture 15 years later after killing his wife in 1913. Other inmates include John Nichols of Washington and accomplices Hewand and William Ambrose linked to a Diagonal bank robbery in 1926.
John Yousling was introduced by Milo Serden as a new Y's Men member at the reg ular meeting. Dunham Morrison reported the playground committee still needs 150 to carry on the full program at both schools. The group enjoyed a junior college play The Rector directed by Ruth Flood.
A large audience enjoyed Washington High School vocal groups and soloists under Boyd White in the auditorium. The program featured contest selections for pre state and state music, with strong performances by the mixed chorus, girls glee club, bass Mas Darnell, baritone Douglas Dowell, the male quartet, and Merle Booth. A second concert by the boys free club is planned for May 7 featuring three groups from the boys glee club and soloists.
Results of the first inspection of Iowa s 33 000 000 bushels of government owned corn in steel bins began April 15 and were praised by state AAA officials Two factors kept the reports favorable far less than one million bushels marketed due to danger of spoilage and all marketed corn graded No 1 or No 2 Weevils damaged some storage while one elevator burned requiring shipment of corn to prevent further loss
Washington May L The House Judiciary Committee shelved the Hatch pure state politics bill for the remainder of the current session. Chairman Platton Stemmers announced the bill was tabled after a two hour meeting. He gave no details but hinted a further announcement might come tomorrow.
Two jewelry salesmen, Al Erin Rosen and Harris Baskin of New York, were held up by three men at eight this morning in Marengo Iowa. The robbers took two black leather sample cases and a tray of loose jewels. They fled in the salesmen’s car after warning them to stay in the area. Mr and Mrs Ernest Enke of Winfield visited earlier.
The girls' glee club presents two sextets the freshmen and senior groups and a girls' trio in a costless vocal concert. No admission charge.
In Clacton on Sea England a German Heinkel bomber crashed into an apartment building killing six people and injuring 162. The plane struck the house burying its crew and exploding bombs. Rescue crews contained a spreading fire and evacuated residents to avert greater tragedy.
The Y W C A announces women swimming classes start Friday May 3 at 7 30 p m led by Mrs Manton Hebner. The class is for high school age girls and adults, meets on Tuesdays and Fridays, with the full summer schedule to be released soon. Membership drive progress is noted with some reports not yet complete.
Fred Geneva, a seasoned coach from Albia and Clinton, was chosen as Washington high school's new athletics coach. A signed contract was mailed to the board at 2 15 this afternoon. Geneva starred at Parsons college and the State University of Iowa and will direct football basketball and track next school year starting in September.

William Fisher 74 died suddenly of a heart attack this afternoon at 1 40 in the old age assistance office where he sat in a chair. Miss Eilene Simpson alerted the coroner and the body was moved to L A Jones funeral home. He had long suffered heart trouble and leaves a wife and three sons Ned Fisher of Washington Gale a Storm Lake high school coach and Clyde of Mt Pleasant.
Mrs. A L Young leaves for Waterloo to spend two weeks with daughter Mrs. A CC Behrens, who has been visiting since Sunday and is returning home with her mother.
The Fort nightly club music committee announces plans for National Music Week May 5 through 11. University of Iowa chamber orchestra directed by Prof Phillip Greeley Clapp will perform Monday May 6 at the high school auditorium. The event is free to the public.
May snow flurries brought frost warnings across Iowa with temperatures dipping to 25 to 30 degrees in northern regions. In Washington County, Risk Construction won a $16,496.64 bid to build a bridge over Crooked Creek on the county trunk road between Washington and West Chester, part of the 1940 road program.
United Press reports a fierce winter storm sweeping north central estates with destructive winds. Residents endure power outages and drifting snow as crews work to restore heating and roads.
A series of deadly storms from Texas to Kentucky left at least 18 dead as snow flurries blanketed the northern corn belt from the Dakotas to Michigan. Snow reached northern Iowa and central Illinois while Chicago recorded its first measurable May snowfall in 17 years. Tornadic winds earlier lashed the Mississippi valley, causing heavy property damage and loss of life, but subsided today.
In a multi city dispatch dated May 1 1940 the report notes German forces move toward Andalsnes to threaten the British port used for Allied debarkation south of Tromsøheim. Allied air defenses claim two German planes shot down while a British cruiser dodges damage and a destroyer is struck.

Ottumwa Morrell male chorus of 36 voices directed by Jesse J. Miller arrives at Washington Methodist Church for an eight o clock concert on Friday May 10. Admission is free with a freewill offering to offset expenses. The group, sponsored by Morrell Packing Co. of Ottumwa, has a history of performances from Ottumwa to festivals and broadcasts on WHO and KMT.
