Neva Butcher of Sidney amassed a 500-salt and pepper shaker collection from 46 states and 10 foreign countries. Her display won the sweepstakes prize at the Kiwanis club second annual hobby show, as the column highlights Iowa culture and local achievers.
crowd of more than 2000 attended the fourth annual all University of Town sing on the fine arts building lawn. Sigma Chi won the men s division while fastlawn dormitory took the girls division. four choruses competed in each division.
Mr and Mrs Fred Kellogg longtime Island Park farmers killed when their auto skidded off a curve into a water filled ditch near Council Bluffs. Dr Ralph Lovelady of Sidney believes the car overturned and the Kelloggs drowned. Mrs Dora Farith of Tabor sustained cuts and bruises and was taken to a Thurm an area son’s home. The couple were en route to visit relatives.
In Cedar Rapids Assistant Chief Al Mikota dispatched a radio car to assist a man who called for help. The intoxicated driver refused to let his wife drive due to no license, and Mikota praised the man for his good sense and deserving service.
Waterloo workers across the Laborers' union cement finishers' union and truck drivers division voted 350 to strike this morning. Officials say picket duty will be on every construction job in the city, threatening widespread paralysis of the industry.
Lynn Hake, 26, died after visiting a Cedar Rapids shooting gallery. He returned in the evening, brandished a .22 pistol, and shot himself after a warning from the proprietor Rudolph Hanson. A notebook showed a year of contemplation of suicide.
Fire swept through Denmark destroying the Denmark Light and Telephone Company. Flames reached Warner’s filling station and lunchroom, which were also wrecked. Ruth Park stayed on duty until smoke forced her out and then summoned firefighters from nearby towns to aid the Denmark volunteers.
Welders Herbert Lind fer and Glenn Mills were seriously burned at the Rath Packing Co. plant in Waterloo when an ammonia tank they were welding on exploded in their faces. Experts said ammonia rarely catches fire and the flames were extinguished quickly.
A plan approved by President Charles E. Finley would bring two refugee students to Iena State College for two years of study. The man and woman, likely from Germany or former Czecho Slovakia, could not continue their education in their homeland.
The War Department designated Puerto Rico as a separate military department to strengthen the canal’s outlying defenses. An air base may be established in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean island chain could serve as a breakwater protecting the canal and Atlantic approaches to Panama. Secretary Woodring said the order will take effect July 1 on Roosevelt’s directive.
The Fortnightly Club music department prepares a nine day local observance May 7 to 13 featuring the University of Iowa chamber symphony orchestra conducted by Dr. Phillip Greeley Clapp. A Monday May 8 concert at 8 pm in the high school auditorium leads the lineup with Washington school students, Sorden Music Studio pupils, and an accordion band under John Yousling presenting performances throughout the week. Church services and recitals close the week as part of the towns annual music week tradition.
Rev. W. J. Stevens, longtime pastor of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Washington since 1933, has decided to stay in Washington rather than accept a promotion as pastor of the Decatur Illinois district church and superintendent of Foursquare churches in Illinois. Local members had refused to accept his resignation until a suitable replacement could be found, but early this week no candidate met the church’s needs for strong pastoral leadership. The church board credited Stevens with sacrificing the larger field to remain in Washington and announced special services Tuesday through Friday with Rev Kenneth Erickson delivering sermons.
Jack Telfer of Milwaukee Wisconsin was elected president of the young men’s assembly of the north central area Councils of Young Men’s Christian Associations at the close of a two day conference in Waterloo. The meeting attracted about 200 delegates from five states.
The committee announces a splendid opening program for National Music Week. Mrs. E. D. Morrison Jr. chairs the planning with assistance from Mrs. W. M. Tweeten, Mrs. A. Anderson, and Edna Klein for next week’s events.
Fire gutted the Home bakery on East Washington street causing about $10,000 in damage. Owner Floyd Grecian and two bakers escaped as flames spread from the basement. the steel bakery ceiling helped prevent a wider disaster to adjacent buildings.
Senator Guy M Gillette announced that President Roosevelt approved a Washington Iowa WPA plan with a $7,571 federal allotment. The project will run sewing rooms to repair donated clothing and household items, distributed free to charities and the needy, with no federal funds for distribution. It falls under the state WPA administrator and will start when funds are available.
Jane Kudrle of Sioux City spoke with Jane Knapp last evening in Ot as Grace B. Spreacker of Dennison, supreme sub deputy of the Rainbow Girls, assisted in arrangements. The visit focused on organizational activities and local chapter support.
Will Owens of Cotter saw his residence burn to the ground after nine this morning. Neighbors acted quickly, saving some ground floor items while the upstairs rooms were destroyed. The cause appeared to be chimney related and no insurance details were learned. Owens was a longtime contributor to the Evening Journal.

Milo Steele tuba soloist and lone Steele contralto soloist perform Thursday. Steele also string bass soloist appearing Saturday. parade finale at University of Iowa stadium directed by Maurice Brayton and Ruth Stewart.
