The Associated Press reports May Day finds employment stable and wages high across the United States. Government observers note little radicalism, expanding unions, and widespread industrial peace with two federal laws aiding labor progress.
An agreement was reached for funding the $25,000,000 debt of Jugo Slavia to the United States. The settlement completes much of the administration’s war debt funding plan for now. Jugo Slavic terms propose long term payments and will be sent to Congress for ratification alongside the France debt deal.
The funeral of L. A. Marr will be held Sunday afternoon at four o'clock at the M K church conducted by Rev. C. B. Rayhill. The Knights of Pythias will have charge at the Keota cemetery.
The celebrated Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler, appointed to the Russian Academy of Sciences by Empress Catherine, authored 756 treatises on mathematics. Many remain in manuscript form.
Dr. E. E. Stutsman will attend a short post graduate course in eye treatment at the State University of Iowa next week. He will drive back and forth for the class sessions.
Mayor J G Maxwell says stop signs require vehicles to halt before arterial crossings and warns arrests will begin next week for violations. He notes drivers often slow but do not fully stop and offers roughly five hundred ordinance copies to interested residents.
Washington observes national music week with school and community events. School pupils perform in the high school auditorium Monday afternoon under Miss Bertha Hay, with grade groups and a combined chorus. Organ recital, club meeting on American music, and a Washington band concert in Central Park cap the week along with church choir numbers.
Sloane M. Wallace, 49, superintendent of Waterloo independent district schools for two years and former West High principal for 18 years, died Friday midnight of pneumonia. He recently served as president of the Iowa State Teachers Association in 1921 and taught previously at Missouri Valley and Edgewood, Iowa.
Work on the Y M C A tennis courts continues under Physical Director Elwood Detrick. The courts have been rolled sanded and new wire fencing installed southwest of the American Pearl button factory. A tournament is planned for the last week of May.
Four men arrested in last night's Mississippi river island liquor raids face arraignment in Dubuque today. Ten federal agents seized nine stills, about 6000 gallons of mash and alcohol, plus a half carload of sugar, with underground tanks found during a large anti illegal liquor operation. A 15 minute gun battle preceded the raid. no injuries reported. Iowa officers named include Cronkhite, Koolbeck, Muhs, Terrill, Giltner, Wilson, and Baldwin. The raid was led by Glen A Brunson who calls the islands a major illicit liquor source.
The body of Charles C. Rupp will be shipped from Fort Scott Kansas Sunday afternoon arriving here at 118 PM Monday morning. Burial will be here but funeral plans or death details are not yet available. He was formerly a resident of this community.
The thermometer climbed above 80 degrees for a third straight April day with yesterday’s high at 82 degrees, marking a continued spell of unusual heat.
Mrs Marsan W Bailey and daughter Josephine drove to Iowa City to meet Mr Bailey who has been in Des Moines on business and at Rotary. They attended the state debate between Fairfield and Rock Valley as part of their day’s activities.
Senator Cummins declares farm relief supporters have enough votes to keep Congress in session all summer until their wishes are respected. He cites Senate favoring the administration cooperation bill with Corn Belt amendments and says hearings and action should not be delayed. Clarke credits Cummins with securing a Washington hearing and strong support for Iowa voters.
Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr announced efforts to avoid suspending the San Francisco Herald due to an $800,000 six month need. Negotiations secured continued publication with M D Churchill stating the Herald will appear Monday morning. Offers for loan and newspaper assets poured in from Los Angeles and several U S cities to avert a crash.
Weather outlook for Monday through the week covers the Upper Mississippi and lower Missouri valleys with scattered thundershowers in the first and second halves. Temperatures are expected to run above normal for most of the period across the region.
Captain James Norman Hall, noted Lafayette Escadrille member and author of Kitchener's Mob, plans a two week visit to his parents in Colfax Iowa after traveling from Tahiti via the Panama Canal. His wife remains in the tropics for health reasons. they married last September in Tahiti.
Federal agents report on the steamer Eker anchored near the Statue of Liberty with about 25,000 gallons of alcohol stored below and in the deck tank. A memo and confession at an arraignment allege a $20,000 protection payment and multiple payoffs to police, agents, and others as the ship was seized near Yonkers.
Trial of Bert M. Davis, former Beaver City grocer and stockman, on a murder charge was temporarily halted as prosecutors seek to prove Mrs. Davis died from poison. Doctors removed organs for exams at Omaha College of Medicine after a dispute over voir dire and prior autopsy findings. The trial began last Monday in McCook Nebraska and resumes after delay.
Peace negotiations between Franco Spanish and Riffian delegates at Oujda in Morocco have been broken off, with the accord failing to proceed as planned.
Mrs. Clint McGee was elected president of the Washington Parent-Teacher Association at the annual meeting in the Y M C A. Miss Louisa Young becomes vice president and Mrs. Lawrence Wilson secretary treasurer. Dr. Stutsman spoke on the PTA’s wholesome influence while Supt. Peet discussed school work and transparency to patrons. The group voted to hire a woman to supervise girls physical training at the Junior High next year, noting previous duties by Guy Carlton.
Akron NAA balloon in the National Balloon Race landed near Welch West Virginia at 7 30 p m after drifting about 660 miles. Officials believe a new world record for 35000 cubic foot balloons may have been set according to Robert S Maxon aide.
Miss Mary Irwin returned from Dexter Iowa after a week on business. Adda Wood of Muscatine arrived and will spend the weekend visiting her friends Nellie DeWitt.
Mrs Howard Richardson traveled to Sigourney last evening to spend a few days as a guest of friends.
Dr SH Bateman has returned home after a business trip through the southern states.
London reports a general strike backed by 208 trades unions and five million workers over coal miners' demands for higher wages and shorter hours. The government proclaims a state of emergency as troops are deployed to coal regions and South Wales ports halt coal exports.
In Salt Lake City on May 1 a ten day hunger strike by Princess Alice the zoo elephant ended when keeper Dutch Shider returned to work. She had refused food after the park board replaced him, spurning the new keeper until the previous one came back.
