In Sioux City thirty people recovered from scarlet fever donated blood for serum extraction. Each donor received five dollars per half pint from the state health department.
Blanche H. Hill filed a damage suit seeking 2000 for injuries suffered by her 11 year old son Lloyd after a St. Bernard owned by Delmar Chambers bit him on December 7. The suit claims the left eye vision was impaired.
Jasper County supervisors approve purchase of ten road work machines for about $20,000 after six bidders competed in the bid. The items include scoops tractors traders and road maintainers for county use.
Three hundred parishioners and friends gathered at St. Mary's in Oxford to honor Rev. T. V. Lawlor a church star. He leaves for Davenport this week to serve as vice president and business manager of St Ambrose College.
ATLANTIC T C Littlefield won a drawing to resolve a tie for the second ward councilman seat. Both Littlefield and incumbent Tim Morrissey received 210 votes in the city section. Morrissey plans to contest the election but did not reveal grounds.
New Hampton Chickasaw county superintendent Vaala ended a two-day sit-down strike at Ottoson School six miles north by visiting and giving a brief talk on citizenship. He then handed the school to teacher Ruth P Drewelow for the first recitation in two days, with no mention of the strike. Pupils were objecting to their assigned work.
Garritt F. Roelofs, director of the Iowa unemployment compensation Commission, announced that Iowa employers have paid 2 292 692 into the state unemployment compensation system and 65 777 into the federal government as their share of the tax.
Dr Donald Slaughter has resigned as an etate professor in the department of pharmacology at the University of Iowa to accept a position at Baylor University in Online Texas. He will take over his new post on September 1 after an advance in rank and a salary increase were cited as the reasons for his departure.
A sales contract was signed for the Sherman Brothers drug store on the square to Stanley Zager a young pharmacist from Storm Lake Iowa who will take possession tomorrow April first succeeding a partnership in charge since 1912. Zager said he comes to Washington with a ready list of patrons and a plan to continue the store’s service.
Weather records and reports in Washington will be handled by Preston Wolf starting April first. He succeeds Don Sherman as Washington's cooperative weather observer.
A Iowa City native and 1932 graduate of the State University of Iowa pharmacy program plans to make Washington his permanent home. He toured drug stores, chose Washington as the best option, rented in the Patterson residence on West Jefferson, and will move his wife and two year old son Jerry there this week. He has three years with a Storm Lake drug store and is heir to a long established business in Washington begun in 1857 by A. W. Chilcote, later run as Chilcote & Cook, Cook & Sherman, and Sherman Brothers.
Mrs Carl Crossett is spending today in Wellman visiting the home of Mr Keith Adams and his wife.
Iowa farmers on March 15, 1937 faced fluctuating prices with overall purchasing power near February levels. Corn, oats and grains fell, while beef cattle hogs sheep and lambs rose, supporting livestock values. eggs butter and butterfat edged up. timothy and legume seeds advanced as spring seeding increased.
Dr L P Ristine of Mt Pleasant state hospital spoke to the Y's Men club on mental health care issues. The club announced new Y's Men chapters to be chartered in St Louis and Chicago on April 10 via telephone and loud speaker.
Representative Martin Dies of Texas urged the House Rules Committee to launch a congressional investigation into the Michigan sitdown strike. He claimed communists and racketeers had displaced local labor leaders in Detroit to inflame the auto strike. The hearing was continued as some members opposed action.
The House agricultural committee voted 13 to 11 against Roosevelt administration tenant legislation after a 12 week fight. Democrats and Republicans split largely along regional lines as Chairman Jones of Texas explained opposition to government involvement in land. The bill would have funded $50 million yearly for a government purchase of farms to resell to tenants on 45 year terms.
Warren Harold Fetes 17 died at 1 05 am in Washington county hospital after infection developed post appendectomy about ten days earlier. Funeral 9 30 am Friday at St James church with burial Elm Grove cemetery. ro sary at 7 pm Thursday at Sherman funeral home. He was born January 14 1920 in Eureka neighborhood and survived by parents Louis and Emma Meschke Fetes siblings Louis Jr Jesse Mildred and George.
Testimony for the plaintiff concluded about ten this morning in Wood versus Moore after Judge Patterson overruled a directed verdict motion. Plaintiff witnesses included Clarence Nash and Mrs. Wood. defense called Dr. Tharp and Leslie Eicher and continued testimony into the afternoon.

The Senate and House acted today in direct response to the Supreme Court upholding a five year moratorium for farmers, signaling immediate legislative support and policy continuation.
Iowa Senate debate centers on a measure to exclude unemployed aliens from unemployment compensation. Sen A Claire Dewey argues it will boost American jobs and deportations, while Louis Schneiden contends the amendment could reward employers for hiring aliens through tax reductions. About 230,000 to 250,000 Iowans would be affected.

Des Moines March 81 INS. A bill to exempt all oil stations from the Iowa chain store tax law failed in the house by 61 to 58. The measure faced opposition from oil companies and followed a Supreme Court ruling invalidating the gross receipts tax provision. Major oil firms had evaded the unit tax by leasing stations to operators. Tax board member F Green said virtually no stations pay the unit tax today. Sponsors denied plans for a new chain store tax or anticipated adverse rulings forcing leases to pay the unit tax.
