A column notes Mrs. Frank Hargraves, 28, died after a kerosene can exploded when knocked from a warming oven onto the stove. Her husband was burned while trying to extinguish flames on Mrs. Hargraves' clothing.
In Emmetsburg near Cylinder three baby girls weighing two, three, and three and three quarter pounds arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Facre. Attending physician Dr F X Cretzmeyer reports mother and babies in excellent health. The birth marks Palo Alto County’s first triplets in fifty years.
Tabor College, Iowa's historic institution founded 1857, will reopen this fall on a self help basis with a waiting list. Prominent figure Georg Weisz, now of Muscatine County, to hold a faculty post as the college resumes its educational cycle amid renewed student interest.

Ruth Hathaway an 18 year old Onawa High School senior and class president drank poison in the locker room after telling classmates watch me commit death by my own action. She died within minutes. Reva Terry Ro Jinger and Phyllis Smith were present and initially thought it a joke.
SIOUX CITY Joe Smith 28 faced parole loss one day from completing a one year sentence for breaking and entering. He reportedly burned his divorced wife William R. Tice’s fur coat after learning she had a date.
A squirrel struck two people at Wesleyan College, injuring Mrs J Laird and student Milton Laubscher with bites on hands. The animal was shot. a second squirrel head was sent to Iowa City for inspection. Mrs Emma Schriner moved away from the window.
Senator Smith W. Brookhart arrived from Washington to survey the state political landscape and consider a bid for the U. S. Senate. He reports his family in good health, with Edith studying law and Florence interning at Children’s Memorial hospital. Brookhart notes a minor leg injury but remains active and ready to discuss Washington developments. He outlines GOP farm proposals, advocating parity pricing, soil conservation, cooperative public works, and job creation to curb unemployment, with a plan to fund excess earnings through a federal charter system.
Washington reports that former Senator Smith W Brookhart may run for the Senate this year with pledges to stump the state. Senators Nye and Wrazier praise his candidacy while Brookhart discusses a bill with K C Kirher to regulate prices and surpluses and advocates an embargo on imports.
The Washington county leadership training school met Mondays in March. Certificates from the International Council of Religious Education were awarded to multiple participants including Miss Mazie Stewart and Dr. F W Mastwood for courses such as Principles of Teaching and The New Testament.
In the city election held yesterday 349 votes were cast. Officers elected include Dr. M. L. McCreedy mayor KE. J. Kyle J. N. Ir win C. D. Weldin A. H. Mc Carty KE. W. Kessel councilmen I. K. Kraemer treasurer C. E. Bennett assessor J. W. Wanerus park commissioner.
Elmer Marner won the Kalona mayoral race yesterday with 186 votes cast. Voters also chose V D Hostetler treasurer F E Bourgeois assessor Alva Niffenegger Alva Kepler and Delmar Reece as park commissioners. Council members elected were Sam W Yoder Frank Pribyl L R Feldman T V Knerr and Walter Gingerich.
E C Jones won the Wellman mayoral race in a quiet election held yesterday. The Citizens' ticket fielded all candidates including W L Darnell as treasurer C M Livesay as assessor B R Sten inger FE N Foster RC Wine garden W S McIntosh and Merle Munson as councilmen.
In a March election Hugh Hall was named mayor with W. R. Smylie as assessor and A. E. Sands as treasurer. Elected councilmen include Lee Hunt J. B. Pressly Jay Evans Harry Bois leau and Harry Duncan. Park commissioners are Will Reaney J. A. Marsh and W. C. White.
William Knebel won the Riverside mayoralty with 127 votes on the Independent ticket, while his opponent garnered 169. Independent councilors chosen were Pailliotet Libenguth Marner Moss Kloppfer, with Dautremont on the People's ticket for council. Dr E F Wheelan endorsed treasurer with 166 votes on the People's ticket. Total votes cast 240.
Crawfordsville voters chose W. P. Davidson as mayor with no opposing candidate. Councilmen elected were Robert I. Williams J. C. Huston 8. P. Fletcher Clarence Davis and Earl Monson. George Yeager was treasurer and R. E. Lease assessor. Two council tickets appeared with no other offices on ballots. Defeated councilmen included O. Dillavoy Harold Miller A. G. Lease Harry White and J. I. Holmes.
A list of names from Washington and Crawfordsville shows attendees of two courses on Primary Materials and Methods and Materials and Methods of Adolescence taught by Mr. C C E Strong and Prof. Harold Williams. Sessions met at the Presbyterian church with several students missing two classes and to receive credit after completing required work.
The Washington county branch of the Republican Volunteers of Iowa plans vigorous recruitment led by Leslie M. Bicher president Richard McCleery vice president and Mrs Harriet Coulter secretary. Charter members aim to build a several hundred member nucleus and each new member to recruit others. Meanwhile Senator George A Wilson will visit to address women at the Congress hotel and a county meeting at the court house. Funeral services for William Keiper were held at the United Presbyterian church with Rev F Fred Sharpe officiating and pallbearers named.
In West Union Iowa on March 31 a civil case proceeds in which Mrs Ruby White widow of Gen White of Oelwein killed in a car driven by Allen C Zell seeks 230000 in damages for his death.
Roger Leavitt Cedar Falls attorney and noted public speaker will address the Cham ber of Commerce April meeting Thursday at 6 30 p m at the Congress hotel following the regular dinner. Des Moines publisher Don O Rosnow calls him one of the most interesting speakers. A large attendance is expected with business topics of special interest on the docket.
In district court this morning a jury was started to try Wood versus Moore. By noon the panel was less than half completed in the case brought by the administratrix of William Gordon Wood's estate after his fatal hit and run incident.
Sophronia Lamphere age 80 died at 10:00 this morning after five years of declining health. Funeral at Sherman’s funeral home Thursday 10:30 conducted by Rev D Chalmers Fulton United Presbyterian church. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Born in Illinois March 28 1856 she moved to Washington as a child. She served in the court house rest room for women and was active in church music. She outlived by none of her siblings.
Roy Schiebel of Davenport is visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. Otto Schiebel.
The jury returned a verdict for D C Schantz in the W H Jordan vs Schantz suit. The plaintiff sought damages for injuries from a truck car collision at Columbus Junction two and a half years ago. Trial ended after 56 18 hours of deliberation, verdict reached at 7 56 yesterday evening.
Supreme Court Justice Trenchard rejected Hauptmanns request for a stay as the condemned man prepared for the electric chair at 8:15 p.m. at the New Jersey state prison. Hauptmann wept and said he would be killed for a crime he believes an innocent man did not commit. Keeper Kimberling reported the prisoner declined breakfast and said he had told all.
On March 31 Bruno Richard Hauptmann faced the electric chair at eight o'clock tonight after New Jersey courts refused a mercy plea and Governor Hoffman denied a reprieve. He remained calm and poker faced, aided by Rev. John Matthiesen who calls his certainty remarkable. His wife Hannah and his mother in Germany expressed sorrow and anger as guards shaved his head for the execution.
