The sole Iowa ticket holder Miss Myrtle Butcher of Keokuk drew Buckthorn a 406 to 1 shot in the Irish Sweepstake. Had Buckthorn won she would have earned $150,000. instead she receives $3,600 in return for her $2.50 ticket.
Bettendorf mayor Gus Lehmann vows to shift politics while keeping his fruit business intact after facing voter questions. He signals stepping back from truck farming but confirms continued agricultural activities and family holdings.
Britt Delores Lavonne Brown, 9 months old, died in a house fire that destroyed the Brown family farm. Milton Brown suffered severe burns as he tried to rescue the infant. Mrs. Brown found the home ablaze upon returning from a neighbor’s visit.
McMains of New Sharon recovered a 25-cent piece lost in 1916 when workmen tore down bank fixtures and uncovered the coin. H. Pothoven remembered McMains and awarded him the quarter along with a nearby old penny as a gesture of goodwill.
Mrs Eleanor Baadte of Sheldon presented a shrine she constructed to St Patrick's Catholic Church titled Our Lady of Victory. It is decorated with mineral and shell specimens from various parts of the world.
Joe Beadle of Albia won a theater bank night prize of 240 dollars. He went home and his wife burned the check with a pile of papers. The theater issued a duplicate check after the mishap.
Nashua R H Carlson recently named manager of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Exchange here was pleased to reclaim his old pipe pack eight years after leaving Decorah. Paul Drake found the pipe and kept it, planning to return it, and finally had the chance on Saturday.
Thomas Barrett Clarence Schuester and Hollis Prin were cited by patrolmen for reckless driving and paid 25 dollar fines after incidents near Dubuque. The report notes the men appeared to be awake at 2 a.m. and the events unfolded as officers intervened.
Two men were found near death after a fire damaged an apartment. The blaze partially destroyed the unit and firefighters worked to control the flames and locate victims. Further details on injuries or causes were not released.
Bedford Iowa March 30 attorneys for Floyd P Horton defense turn to second day of testimony about an Oyster supper at Mrs Anna Johnston home a month before the murder Frank Ladd hired hand testifies Ella Horton complained of a bitter taste in soup and Johnston allegedly plotted to poison Horton’s wife. Horton denies plotting with Johnston or placing poison and will testify in his own defense.
Collector Guy T. Helvering defended the administration tax program in Washington as fair and based on undistributed corporate earnings. He noted the Ways and Means Committee plan totals about 700 million dollars in receipts, short of administration needs by 300 million dollars.
Washington public school teachers and pupils begin their annual spring vacation today. The schools will resume work next Monday morning to finish the last weeks of the school year. Most teachers will attend the Southeast Iowa district convention at Oskaloosa later this week.
Jess Ash age 40 and Theodore Gladwell age 48 were occupying with another man when injured. Hospital attendants say their chances of recovery remain uncertain.
In Des Moines near Crocker street and Keosauqua way a yellow dog waited at a traffic light for safe crossing. As the light turned green a speeding sedan struck the dog, causing a dull thud and howl. The driver did not stop.
Walter Conner reports 260 residents in Washington County receive old age pensions with an average monthly payment of 14.10 dollars. In one month 3,690 dollars were paid and yearly totals reach 44,280 dollars. Since inception eleven pensioners have died and three pensions were suspended. A county board meeting was held with Chairman J. A. Mareh and members WS Eldridge and Miss Jane Ludy present.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at L A Jones funeral home. Dr B F Schwartz of the Methodist church officiated. Pallbearers included William Salterburg, William Salterburg Jr, Carl Corpman, Roy Sowash, Jake Soethout and Merle Statler. Burial followed at Elm Grove Cemetery.
Court session opened at eleven with Henry Bailey presenting the first plea. Testimony from Thursday and Friday precedes a jury retirement in a damages claim arising from an automobile collision. Two related trials may follow, including Wood versus Moore and McAdoo versus Moore.
Washington high school earned a superior rating in the Class A state high school play production contest at Iowa City along with Webster City and Franklin high of Cedar Rapids. Mrs. James Parizek of Iowa City died Saturday evening. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at nine o'clock in Iowa City. She is survived by her husband and a SOD, plus her daughter Mrs. Ives Mc Kay.
Funeral services are set for 2 30 Tuesday at L A Jones funeral home for Ralph Kohlicek with Dr F W Eastwood of the Presbyterian church in charge. Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery. Kohlicek, 39, was born in the Richmond community and died early Saturday morning at a hospital in Cheyenne Wyoming.
Alice Wilson of Keota was in town for a Saturday afternoon shopping outing, enjoying the local shops and scenes during a brief visit.
DES MOINES Iowa March 30 UP Fifty one persons died in 184 grade crossing accidents in 1935 per the Iowa state board of railroad commissioners after a survey by HH A Franklin chief engineer The toll rose six from 1934 though there were 11 more accidents that year The report urges protective installations at key crossings and a law to penalize passing a signaling crossing without stopping It notes federal funds of 6 million were allocated for protection but spent on grade separation only The table shows four year trends with 1935 1934 1938 1932 figures The author argues for continued protection rather than elimination of crossings and highlights ongoing experiments with new devices There are about 12 200 grade crossings in Iowa with roughly 900 protected by some device
Washington High School won the Class A sweepstakes plaque for the most winning events at sub district and district contests. They tallied 10 superiors at sub district and nine at district in Burlington. Other Class A entrants included Iowa City Fairfield and Ft Madison with Wellman winning Class C and Sigourney taking Class B. Awards were presented later as plaques arrived late.
Washington county dog owners race to license their pets before the April first deadline. Only 1,165 licenses had been issued this morning, with 700 more needed to reach last year’s total of 1,835. If not licensed, delinquent dogs will shift to the county treasurer for taxation.
The Little Cyclones won the Iowa state basketball championship by defeating Son City 26 to 12 in Des Moines Saturday evening. Webster City beat Ottumwa 41 to 81 in the consolation to claim third place with Packard of Ottumwa making six field goals.
Washington county farmers refinanced through the Farm Credit Administration saving more than 18 800 yearly in interest. From May 1933 to end of last year 240 farmers obtained 1 607 000 for refinancing old debts with loans from the Federal Land Bank and Farm Credit agencies.
State House in Trenton reports the New Jersey court of pardons and appeals debating Hauptmann mercy plea. Six judges and Governor Hoffman enter executive session to decide life or death fate, with the condemned Lindbergh baby killer awaiting potential execution tomorrow night at 8 30.
In Trenton a secret impeachment resolution against Governor Hauptmann is being prepared and kept for legislative action. If the court of pardon again refuses and the governor grants another reprieve, the impeachment will be lost according to the legislature.
Berlin reports show more than 98 percent participation in the plebiscite on occupation of the Rhineland. Chancellor Hitler plans to unveil a twenty five year peace plan to the powers and may summon the newly elected Reichstag to hear the message in the capitals of the Lochno treaty powers. The government won 44,411,911 votes to 543,326 against or invalidated.
Mr and Mrs George Scott and their son Carl visited Sunday evening at the home of Mrs Scott s mother Mrs H C Dittmer near Batavia.
Funeral services for Mrs Sands wife of the mayor of Ainsworth were held Saturday afternoon at the Methodist church in Ainsworth with Rev. E J Shook and Rev. O B Rogers officiating. Burial followed in Ainsworth cemetery. Pallbearers were James Clegg R L Duncan Hugh Hall Steve Ross A P Jeffrey and Robert Acheson. City officials and Kensington club members served as honorary pallbearers and escort.
