The passenger steamer Stella bound for the Channel Islands struck Casquet rocks in dense fog and went down in ten minutes. About 120 people are believed drowned in one of the worst ocean disasters in years.
Two original witnesses and two recalled test fed the army beef inquiry in Washington. Lieutenant Gampier and Major Webb disputed Armour & Co. supply claims, with Webb denouncing canned roast beef as nonnutritive and “like moonshine in the mouth” while noting some refrigerated beef was acceptable.
Armour's agent at Tampa recalled two instances where entire meat consignments were refused at Lakeland and in three or four other cases portions were rejected. He cited a visit to Lakeland in August when a consignment was rejected and beef was found on the plat ro, discussing details with Captain Carmichael.
The testimony covers Morehouse memory issues and denial of claims about meat treated with chemicals. Colonel Woodruff recalls a 350000 pound canned beef shipment to Britain and notes beef quality matched that sent to foreign markets and the navy. He notes Cuba complaints and deeming the beef palatable with an aim to aid the army subsistence department.
Filipino capital Malolos falls into General Douglas MacArthur's hands after a brief fight. Aguinaldo had already left, with his cabinet and capital moving north as government forces clash. MacArthur’s troops press the attack, rebels resist strongly, and Malolos is entered and set ablaze as evacuation proceeds.
Mrs. George W. Young of Sioux City Iowa was buried after a life marked by frontier hardships. Daughter of J W Earle she and her family fled a Sioux war party in 1862 and endured capture and rescue at Yellow Medicine before she helped lead a local charity and served on state and local reform boards.
A Greensburg Indiana clipping preserves a letter dated May 6 1857 from G Bailey praising Montgomery Blair in the Dred Scott case. The note details costs of writ of error 6348 dollars and printing 91 dollars 50 cents, urging donations from 75 Republican members of Congress to cover the bill.
Reports misstated survivors of the Mississippi steamer Rowena Lee wreck near Tyler Missouri. Three to four people are believed lost after the vessel struck an obstruction and hull damage hurt many aboard. Among the missing: Mrs Chambers of Caruthersville and mail clerk M T Kelly of Memphis.
Loretta Gagnon, five year old daughter of Mayor Gagnon of Two Rivers Wisconsin, fell into a pail of hot water and was severely scalded. A brief telegraph report notes the incident.
Washington reports after a cabinet meeting President, Acting Secretary Meiklejohn and General Corbin weigh the future of volunteers and the regular army. The regular force stands about 62,000 with Cuba and the Antilles reassignments shaping garrisons. A call for 35,000 volunteers remains open, conditions hinge on conditions in the Philippines and Aguinaldo.
Officers expect mustering of 25 000 volunteers for service until July 1901 as regulars near limit.
