Memphis dispatch reports the Rowena Lee, a Lee Line steamer between Memphis and Cairo, sunk in mid stream at Tyler Missouri. About sixty aboard perished with only Captain Carvell and one mate surviving. Passengers and crew details list Captain George Carvell and officers among the dead or missing.

Cuban Wife Seeks Arrest for Bigamy of Soldier Husband

Manuela Perez, claiming to be the Cuban wife of Sergeant Theodore Hawkins of the Eighth Mindrs volunteers, told police that Hawkins deserted her after learning he was already wed. She says they married in January at Palma Soriano and that he brought her to the United States, providing neither food nor heat. A warrant for Hawkins's arrest on bigamy is expected. Perez is 26, educated, and speaks English.

Strikes End as Bloomington Miners Accept 5 Cent Pay Rise

Bloomington, March 30. After a tense stand off the Mine Workers union ended the strike as operators agreed to a five cent per ton increase. Miners had demanded binding state arbitration for a year, but rejected the six month term. Millard Lloyd led the miners in insisting on the longer binding period.

Word arrived that David Babcock prominent Fond du Lac resident died in Hot Springs Arkansas. Born Utica New York January 4 1835 he moved to Wisconsin 1855 lived in Waupun Milwaukee and Fond du Lac. He served in the Civil War in company I First Wisconsin infantry and later practiced law in Springfield Illinois. Representatives of major agricultural implement makers say March freezing weather seriously damaged the Wheat in central Iowa.
