Muscatine reports the death of Sharon Faye Lee seven year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Clifford Lee of Letts following several months of throat cancer.
Three upperclass women and two escort men depart Tuesday for a 3000 mile journey through Kentucky Tennessee Alabama Georgia Virginia New Jersey and New York to support varsity debate work at Cornell College.
Sanborn Iowa chess champion Chris Bang of Spencer will oppose 20 top players in an exhibition matchup here Thursday. He will move between boards, playing all 20 at once with no charge.
Harry Mayhew was named to fill the unexpired term on the Red Oak school board to replace Dr. C. C. T. Hays who moved from the city. His daughter Lola Jean Mayhew was Iowa’s brain derby queen last year.

Sioux City clerk court records show Earl HK May Seed Co. store manager Cecil Hillman denying a transient merchant ordinance violation charge brought by City Inspector J. A. Fleming. The case centers on selling merchandise without a license with a hearing set for next Tuesday.
Indianola report shows 47 head bring 4779 dollars averaging 101 dollars. Ira Braucht owner of 41 head nets 4200 dollars at an average of 192 45. B Hudson and Sons of Knoxville sold four head with two sold by an Adel breeder. Ten head bought by Moise Cerf of Ennis Texas and two shipped to Peoria Illinois bought by M J Buseh.
West Union voters again chose West Union mayor Stam who had been elected in 1887 and appointed by the council. He won 256 votes without opposition as about five decades passed since his prior tenure. Loftus won re election to council over Hunteberger 148 to 125. Keig Peterson Gruver and Neff were reelected without opposition.
The Ottumwa Chamber of Commerce votes to appoint a committee led by President Horace A. Brown to study preserving Ottumwa Heights junior college amid plans by the Sisters of Humility of Mary to open a women’s college in Davenport. About 415 students attend Ottumwa Heights. the mother house and academy would remain in Ottumwa.
Raymond Colburn aged 22 months, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Colburn, accidentally swallowed a metal washer the size of a nickel. He was taken to University hospital in Iowa City after an X ray showed the washer in his stomach. Doctors will decide on treatment.
William G. Daub 61 died at Washington county hospital from injuries after his International pickup overturned on primary road six miles southwest of town. Dave Miller and Ray Walton injured mildly. Daub's death noted as first 1938 local highway fatality, funeral plans pending.
Sheriff Putnam says the rise in juvenile delinquency stems largely from home influences. He notes many parents neglect guidance and allow late nights, while some homes lack a mother or have difficult step relations. He warns delinquency often begins before law intervention and urges stronger parental responsibility.
Washington county members of the American Legion plan a Thursday evening gathering in Brighton hosted by the Brighton post. Entertainment will feature the Brighton high school girls trio, tap dances by Ernestine Herr, saxophone by Joe Christy, and a program run by Forrest Johnston, with district officers expected including Fort Madison’s Wilhem Gee and Harry Sluwpsou.
Five United States Navy pilots were killed when their aircraft crashed in the Pacific near Honolulu today. The accident occurred during routine flight operations with no immediate explanation available.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam investigated a burglary at the Buzzard tavern and pool hall in Brighton. The thief entered the basement and used a trap door to reach the upper floor, escaping with $435.05 last night.
In Hendaye on March 30 Spanish loyalists battled to stem a rebel advance across Catalonia. Front lines from Teruel to Barbastro near Lerida remained tight with casualties rising as the fifth command sent wounded troops back to combat.
Mrs. Thomas H. Riley, a practical nurse, was found dead in her bed at the Ernest Jones home in Crawfordsville around five this morning. She cared for Mrs. Jones and baby for about a week and died in her sleep amid high blood pressure. Funeral set for Friday at 2 PM at Crawfordsville Methodist Church with burial in Crawfordsville Cemetery. Riley survived by husband and three sons, two sisters, and one brother. body taken to I. A. Jones funeral home in Washington.
Frank Geyer died at his home two miles northwest of Wellman yesterday afternoon after a lingering illness. The funeral will be in the Wellman church Thursday at two o clock conducted by Rev. Paul Hann. Burial will be in the Bunkerhill cemetery near Wellman. He is survived by his wife and several children. Mr and Mrs W M Totemier of Winfield and Mr and Mrs BE Chambers of Keota were among shoppers to Washington today.
Washington and Ben Nichols of Nichols named vice commanders, Fred Downing of Washington as adjutant, R. W. O'Connor of Keokuk as Americanism chairman, and Lou Clark of Iowa City as state vice commander.
Funeral services for Dee Bal lew who died yesterday afternoon will be held at two o'clock Thursday at Sherman’s funeral home conducted by Rev. W M Berry of the A M E church. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. He lived in Washington since 1910 born in Waco Kentucky December 5 1889 and married Lulu Lewis October 1915. He leaves wife a daughter Loretta three sons Luther Lester and Sherman his mother Mrs Jennie Estill a sister Mrs Aaron Howard and brothers Arthur Ballew and Hugh. He worked in house cleaning and formerly in a Detroit auto plant. George Gibson of Cedar Rapids visited today.
In a senate address Mussolini boasted Italy can swiftly defeat any foe, detailing growing forces and mobilization. He hailed navy progress, predicted 1941 battleships, and said Italy could mobilize up to 9 million soldiers with 26 000 to 30 000 pilots ready for service.
Des Moines reports solid Iowa purchasing power with tax collections near 1937 levels despite tax relief for thousands. As of March 20 1938 returns totaled 26 000 fewer than 1937 yet receipts stood at 1 772 966.56 compared with 1 791 420.27, indicating higher income among residents says La Verne Clark state income tax director.
Des Moines reports a four year expansion plan for state liquor stores is halted after opening or leasing 168 outlets and forecasting a ten million dollar annual business. Commissioner Lane says no new sites will be added, denying Mt. Ayr plans, with 13 counties yet without access and receipts totaling about 8.91 million last year.
In Detroit a clash at the Federal Screw works wounded one policeman and assaulted about 600 strikers and non striking workers. Police, including 150 officers and mounted units, restored order after a lengthy battle with stones and clubs.
